Who’s your favorite movie Santa?

This season seems to have brought more movie Santas than anyone can count.

Mekhi Phifer dons a red Santa Claus suit in “This Christmas.” And soon you’ll see Morris Chestnut as a mall Santa in “The Perfect Holiday” (debuting Dec. 12). If you’ve seen “Fred Claus,” you know not only does Paul Giamatti play St. Nick, but there’s a pack of Santas who chase after Vince Vaughn.

If “Fred Claus” wasn’t such a lousy movie, Giamatti might be among my favorite movie Santas. He’s kind, thoughtful and, sad to say, an enabler.

I have found that my favorite Santas cover a wide range of personalities:

1. Edmund Gwenn in “Miracle on 34th Street” (1947) — Simply the nicest.

2. Billy Bob Thornton in “Bad Santa” (2003) — Simply the naughtiest.

3. James Cosmo in “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (2005) — His Father Christmas looks exactly how I always pictured Santa.

4. Edward Ivory in “The Nightmare Before Christmas” (1993) — OK, he looks and sounds a little befuddled. But wouldn’t you in the same circumstance?

5. Peter Jackson in “Hot Fuzz” (2007) — Without a screen credit it’s hard to tell who’s in the Santa suit. This time it was the Oscar-winning director of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

Who’s your favorite movie Santa? Ed Asner in “Elf”? Tom Hanks in “The Polar Express”?

When I think of Santa; Edmund Gwenn always comes to mind first. Billy Bob is just being himself as Santa, I think.

I love Tim Allen in the Santa Clause movies- he is surprisingly good. The transformation from self-absorbed single guy (not to mention Home Improvement’s resident doofus) to kindly Saint Nick is brilliant. I think he has found the role he was born to play. Allen’s Santa is traditionally kindly and jolly, but also cool and hip. A classic!

BTW: Tom Hanks’ Santa in The Polar Express is just creepy. I find that Herman Munster voice disturbing.

The worst has to be the Santa in the old “Rudolph”. He calls baby Rudolph a freak then tells the elves their song sucks. Santa was an a$$.

Dan Aykroyd in Trading Places with Eddie Murphy was the best Santa, especially when he pulled the turkey leg out from his costume.

I think David Huddleston, from Santa Claus: The Movie. It was supposed to be Dudley Moore’s movie but, Huddleston looks and sounds like the Santa Claus of my imagination.

One of the classic “Santa” movies in my family is Santa Claus: The Movie (1985). I think in the last 30 years, David Huddleston’s portrayal of the jolly fellow probably most resembles what Santa Claus is to a child.

I agree with Kasey, the Dan Aykroyd Santa was priceless. Also, the actor who played santa in A Christmas Story…”how about a nice football?…kid, you’ll shoot your eye out?”

I love Tim Allen as Santa Claus. When I first saw the advertisements I thought, no way. But he really pulled it off and the make-up transformation was incredible. I’ve looked forward to each sequel.

Tim Allen is an unfunny douche. Billy Bob Thornton was great in Bad Santa. He got to say/do everything that we all want to say/do around this time of year.

Well, Edmund Gwenn is definetly the best there ever was. But I’d have to give a nod to Douglas Seale in “Ernest Saves Christmas.” He was just right as a Santa who was ready to hand over the reins…literally. And his reactions to Ernest are priceless!

The sexiest one is Morris Chestnut thats a lap I would love to sit on for Christmas and tell him what I want…he would be top of the list. The best and rawest is Billy Bob…I will never look at Santa the same!

The real winner of the Bad Santa contest has to be Dan Akroyd from Trading Places, with Eddie Murphy. Another Bad Santa would be the one from A Christmas Story.

AlohaVampire, Good question. I don’t think there have been a lot of black Santas portrayed in the movies. Who would be a good one? Let’s think…the first one that pops into my mind is Bill Cosby. He could give all the little kids Jello Pudding and teach them to read while he’s at it. Anyone else?

Billy Bob…no question! Bad Santa (or the unrated “Badder” Santa) is THE best holiday movie EVER. It takes something that’s so “pure” (at least in most people’s eyes) and makes as much fun of it as possible…to the extreme!

While Billy Bob may not be the most traditional Santa is could win the “Coolest Santa” award! That is the only movie where I liked him.

BILLY BOB!!! BILLY BOB!!! BILLY BOB!!! Sorry folks, Bad Santa helped me get through a miserable and lonesome holiday season when it was released and it will always have a spiritually meaningful place in my heart. No Santa has ever been genuinely naughtier and bonus points to all those who mentioned Danny A. in Trading Places…

ROFLMBO at Rusty! I thought I was the only one who noticed how mean Rudolph’s Santa was. I always think of the Santa from the original Miracle on 34th Street. I still think he’s the real Santa. Billy Bob Thornton in Bad Santa was the most realistic for me because my Daddy and uncles were all mean drunks. Oh, the memories…LOL

EDMUND GWENN!!! After all, didn’t John Payne (with a little help from the US Post Office, and we all know how reliable THEY are!!!) prove that Kris Kringle was the REAL Santa Claus?!?!

WILLIAM FRAWLEY should get an Honorable Mention for his hilarious portrayle of a street-corner Santa in the Bob Hope classic, “The Lemon Drop Kid”; what with his gruff voice, that scraggly beard and his naturally rotund gangster looks, he was a Santa you’d better not pout or cry in front of!!

I think Billy Bob did a good job of destroying what Santa Claus stands for. This was a filthy movie, and should never have been shown.

He was a genuinely nice man in life, so I’m told, and that carried over to his portrayal of Santa. Edmund Gwenn is the best.

Edmund Gwenn or Richard Attenburg either one did a fantastic job as Kris Kringle. (Both Miracle on 34th movies—-and I love each of the movies too).

Tim Allen definately should be on the list. He is to my children what Gwenn was to me.

Bill Bob Thorton? That’s like saying Jack Nicholson should be Santa…

The Coca Cola Santa gets my vote too…surely he has been a movie at some time?

Bad Santa was ridiculously bad. Awful movie. It shouldn’t even appear in the list. Not a funny, redeeming, or inspirational thing about it. Just nonsense.

i’d have to go with the original M34ST and the newer version of it as well…. But as far as sitcoms go nothing beats Ed O’Neill as Al Bundy (dressed in a Santa suit) in Married With Children!
