Where are the best holiday cookies?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Dainty. Pretty. Sweet. I’m not talking about the members of the DAR.
I’m talking cookies — beautiful, delicate cookies decorated better than a Christmas tree or menorah to light the season. Cookbooks — my lastest fave is “Cookie Craft” by Valerie Peterson and Janice Fryer — are abundant about them. School carnivals can’t get enough of them. And kids (from one to 92) love them.
Where are the best decorated and decked-for-the-halls cookies in Atlanta?

Has anybody ever made butter cookies using what I can only describe as a cookie dough gun? You put a little template on the end of this thing and it squirts cookies out in the shape of watever the template is (star, tree, bell, etc.) My mom always put a little food coloring in to make it prettier. She taught me to make these cookies pretty early on. This fall, my daughter found a 60’s model cookie gun in mint condition (still in the box)at a flea market for five dollars. This year we’ll have these pretty, delicious cookies again!

I don’t know, what a Holiday cookie? Is it a cookie for Ramadan or Hannukkah? No, it’s for Christmas, so why can’t you say “Christmas cookie”? After all, Christmas is the FEDERAL HOLIDAY. I’m so tired of this politically correct nonsense.

We have a Christmas Cookie party every year the weekend before Christmas. My daughter’s friends all come over, and a few of mine come too. We make sugar cookies, and gingerbread cookies from scratch.
We have all shapes of cookie cutters, and tons of decorating stuff. I’ll have about 20 people over……
Cookie Fan It’s called a cookie press, and you can find recipes on the internet. I have my Grandma’s that she used back in the 1950’s…..I LOVE THAT THING!!!!!!

CookieFan I’m sorry, it’s called Spritz cookies. Also known as a cookie press. You can find Spritz cookies on-line.

Christmas Cookies- ah, which one is my favorite? I usually set aside two whole days in December to bake cookies to give to friends, teachers, neighbors, family, etc. I make 7-8 different kinds each year and assemble a sampler plate for each recipient. I would say that the ones that get the most comments are both p’nut butter/choc combo’s- my buckeyes and my Ritz sandwiches with p’nut butter in the middle dipped in choc drizzled with white choc to add a special touch. I also make the butter “spritz” cookies each year, but not many comments on those. I think they are overshadowed by the others…

Oh, I just remembered, my mom called them Spritzbaaken! I don’t know why I don’t just ask her these things.
Thanks everyone for your responses and have a Cool Yule!

Agan’s bakery in Cartersville makes the best frosted suger cookies ever. They are light and slightly crispy with a wonderful frosting on top. They come in many designs for the holidays. Agan’s is on Main Street in downtown Cartersville.

Anyone remember Rich’s Dept. stores xmas cookies? OMG! Best things I’ve ever tasted. Although now that I’m all growed up, I don’t EVEN want to know the calorie/fat count on those puppies.

So glad Atlanta is into baking cookies—as we say in Cookie Craft, memories are made in the kitchen! Sending wishes for happy holidays, happy baking to our friends in Georgia—Valerie Peterson (co-author, with Janice Fryer, of Cookie Craft)
