When do you start playing Christmas music?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

You know the stores are going to jump the gun on the holiday season. That’s a given. The decorations are decking the halls of retail outlets everywhere, even before we ignite the lights on our jack-o-lanterns.
The garland and tinsel have been deployed, but what about music? It isn’t even Thanksgiving, yet you can hear the strains of “Jingle Bells” and “Winter Wonderland” in the air. Is it too soon to haul out the holiday tunes?
When do you start playing those old familiar songs? Is Thanksgiving Day the appropriate time, or do you wait for the big shopping day that follows? And when the time is right, which album do you pull out first?

I begin playing Christmas music the week of Thanksgiving. I absolutely cannot wait until I can play it. I used to wait until December but there is so much great holiday music that I need additional time to play it all! I don’t stop playing it until the end of January. I know the season is officially over, but I enjoy the music so much that I do play it well after Christmas.

Yes it is too early for the Christmas music. Its too early for all the commericals about shopping for Christmas, it appears that everyone is just worried about what to buy and how much to spend instead of the REAL reason for the holiday.

As a former seasonal retail employee(16 years ago) I still loathe ANY Christmas music.
Its like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. I try to shop online, but even grocery stores have it so I just have to suffer.

I will vote for a constitutional amendment that would ban Christmas music until the Monday after Thanksgiving.

I usually wait until after Thanksgiving but I am extra happy right now, having just gotten a new job and a whopper raise, so I turned the holiday tunes on yesterday!

It is ridculas that X-Mas music is being played. All the commercials too… shows that the true meaning of Christmas in this country has gone to - “What did I get this year” It’s gross!

Some of us who like the music are not materialistic-to the contrary, the thing we like best is the season, spending time with family and friends, and hearing beautiful carols.
I’m with you on the commericals though. I get sick of them pretty early on.

I hate to admit it, but I start playing Christmas music as soon as the first chill hits the air. It reminds me of my childhood, my grandfather, the house I grew up in, etc. etc. etc. People make fun of me, but let them have at it! I like what I like… sue me.

I start as early as I can. Sometimes right after Halloween. Christmas is the best! It’s a bonus that the grinches of the world (Dave and Turn It Off) are forced to endure it. I guess their hearts are 10 sizes too small.

Geez, This sounds horrible.. but I can’t even stand Christmas music anymore. I agree, it shouldn’t be played untill a few days before Christmas. I work in a service industry, and when you listen to A britney spears and justin timberlake Christmas for a month straight, you might grow to dispise it too. Bring back the classics, Christmas Shoes and Deck the Halls. Once again, blame the rise of fame for horrible music, and putting a bad taste in peoples mouths about holiday music. Blah Blah, I am dreading the day after thanksgiving as we speak.

I generally start listening to Christmas music a week or two before Christmas itself. I cannot stand to hear a strain of “Jingle Bells” or any other Christmas song before December 1. I hate decorating early, as well. I don’t like skipping Thanksgiving for Christmas. I prefer to wait until December has actually begun before I start feeling festive.

I fail to see the connection between great music - Christmas or otherwise - and the commercialization of Christmas. Great music is just that - great music. For me, the purpose of great music is to lift the spirit and spread goodwill. Therefore, I think we should listen to Christmas music ALL YEAR LONG to help keep people focused on the big picture.
As the lyric from “Christmas Time Is Here” says, “Oh that we, could always see, such spirit through the year.”
Happy Holidays!
P.S. The late, great Vince Guaraldi’s Charlie Brown Christmas recording - highlighted above with the graphic image - is a fantastic and timeless one! Everyone should have that music in their collection.

I don’t want to hear Christmas music until AFTER Thanksgiving. The day after is early enough! As far as what I play first, it varies.
Note to 104.7 The FISH: You’re not keeping the thanks in Thanksgiving if you start playing Christmas music ON THANSGIVING DAY!

Most importantly, make sure the stores, and the malls, and so on keep using the word “Christmas.” This PC nonsense has to die. It’s not “Macy’s Great Tree”; it should be “Macy’s Great Christmas Tree”. See how many mall Santa displays even mention Christmas this year. Last year, Cumberland Mall refused to. What does Santa represent? Ramadan? Hanukkah? I don’t think so.
For those who say some are offended by Christmas, I say who cares? Most importantly Christmas is the FEDERAL HOLIDAY and should be recognized as such.

I think having christmas music is a joy and it gets everyone in the Holiday mood of giving and being blessed. I live in a small town 30 miles west of Atlanta called Villa Rica and the city put up holiday decorations the day after halloween and people were glad. If we share a little more love around all the year we would understand more better why we celebrate the birth of our lord and savior Jesus christ. He came down to save the world from all the nonsense that goes on and to give love, some people just hold on to the hope of Christ so why take it away from them by petty stuff such as when or when not to play music or when or when not do we celebrate christmas. Just know that God is still alive and well and whatever you do for him willlast always. Happy THanksgiving and Merry Christmas to all!

My sister and niece listen to Christma music all year long. I usually play it while putting up the decorations over the Thanksgiving Holiday, and then off and on until Christmas. Listening to the same songs over and over whether they are Chrismas songs or not can get old. Even good songs can be over played.

The stereo is on 24/7 at my house. I love the Christmas music. I love it in the middle of the night, when I get up to get some water. I walk out into the living room, see the beautiful tree, the decorations around the house, and the lovely christmas music coming from the speakers. Sometimes I just sit, in the quiet, taking it all in. It just doesn’t get any better than that.

Mark, this “HOLIDAY” Season, I sincerely hope you do find a nice boy to kiss away some of that grumpiness you have toward others.
Also, adding some more fiber to your diet might help you feel better, too.
FYI: That “Man Pudding” you consume is reported to be VERY high in calories, Mark, but if you absolutely crave that one-of-a-kind taste…..

I’m just hoping that Mark’s gayness extends only to adult males. I’m not so sure. And I hope he doesn’t have kids. In the worst case, they’re in danger. In the best case, they’re missing out on one of our country’s best traditions.

Mark……you fail to realize that the Christian GOD is god of compassion. He gives us freewill to believe or not to believe. I’m a history teacher and believe me when I say this…..Jesus was man who lived. I may not agree with what you say, but you are in my heart because I have compassion for my fellow man. With GOD’s love, you will understand

First of all there is a lot of “Christmas” music that is not worthy to be called Christmas music. There are other fun songs, Frosty, Jingle Bells, My Favorite Things, that are not Christmas songs at all. I listen to Christmas music as soon as I can dig it out of the other decorations and also will sing some of my favorite Jesus music all year long.

Please— Please as my son says ” Quit skipping Thanksgiving” and let Christmas not begin until the first week of December!

The Christmas season should begin with the arrival of Santa in the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade. I live in Columbus, GA and they started playing Christmas music the week after Holloween. At this rate retailers will have us celebrating Christmas in July, although I wish the Christmas spirit of generousity that so many get would last the entire year. The world would be a much better place.

We start playing Christmas music on Thanksgiving and it will run non stop until Christmas day. I love it. I’m about to put all my dads Christmas CDs on my iPod so I can choose my favorites. I’m super sad though that 94.9 no longer does Christmas music since it’s a country station now but the Fish is pretty good. For those of you who don’t enjoy Christmas music, BAH HUMBUG!!!

Sarah - Was Mark’s coming out post deleted, or are you just slapping the gay label on him because nothing could be more insulting? Congratulations, you’ve just insulted the hell out of me. Yes, I’m a lesbian, and a Christian too. Wow, you must be really impressed with yourself for that intelligent mix of humor and hatred.
ChrisD3 - I didn’t realize that being gay equals being a pedophile. Luckily, I have you and your infinite wisdom to behold. Just how much time have you spent thinking about this?
I thank both of you for your incredible Christmas spirit. Who knew that I’d find such fantastic, thought-provoking, and wonderfully witty comments about holiday music. Oh wait, my bad, you’ve ruined that.

sharon,
Are you sure you aren’t looking for the GLAAD or GLUE blogs?
Since you just had to let us all know your orientation within the context of how you celebrate Christmas, do you like to stick candy canes in your Nooner while listening to “WHITE CHRISTMAS” to make up for having that male void in your life? I would pay good money to see that.
Do you and your “life partners” ever like to have fellows over? I bet that would be HOT. The very thought sets my Yule Log ablaze.

My, my, it looks like I may have offended someone’s machismo-fueled sensibilities! Sorry, sunshine, but not every woman needs you, wants you, or desires your dangling dead wood. I bet you know alot more about the male void than I do. Admit it, so many women find you irrelevant, and it just p** you off!
Clearly, you’ve missed the obvious. I clicked this link to chitchat about Christmas music. Yet, I found so much more!
Keep dropping your little lumps of bitter coal, because I find this blog very entertaining!
