Give fall decorating its due

There are still some of us who are a little concerned over the way Christmas has all but eclipsed the fall holidays in the decorating department.

Christmas trees were up in stores before Halloween. Garland is already wrapped around street lamp poles. Call me old fashioned, but I like to give each holiday its due, in its own time.

So, during the run up to Thanksgiving it’s nice to decorate the front porch with an assortment of beautiful heirloom pumpkins and gourds, and, if there’s room, a dried cornstalk or two.

But what I want to know is, where are the pumpkin patches and the pumpkin lots that have the best heirloom selection? Not just the traditional, Charlie-Brown orange ones, but ones shaped like Cinderella’s carriage or plump, ghost-white clouds, or funky, speckled green ones that crane like a goose’s neck.

After Thanksgiving is over, some of them make fabulous pies. So where are the places with the best selections? And what else do you do to decorate for Turkey Day?

I don’t put up one single Christmas ornament until the Friday after Thanksgiving. Fall decorating for me means pumpkins, mums, and Indian corn, not evergreens and holly. I usually just keep whatever I have up for Halloween minus the skeletons and jack’o’lanterns.

Check out Randy’s Perennials near downtown Lawrenceville. They have a great selection.

We picked up the most wonderful selection of the pumpkins & gourds you mention above plus more at Harry’s. I also leave the fall decorations up till the day after Thanksgiving. I love Fall & all the colors.

Every year on the day before fall, I take my Christmas tree out of the box. I put it up and decorate it with artificial fall leaves, fall paper cups and place cards that have bible verses, people and things we are thankful for written on the cards, white lights are also on the tree. The tree matches the fall table cloth and place mats that my table is dressed in. I have an autumn village and two lovely decorative teddy bears dressed in fall colors. I love this because it reminds me of how blessed we are and this is a way for me to show how thankful I am. On Thanksgiving night I transform the fall decorations into Christmas decorations. It’s a great time and it’s easy because the hardest part is putting the tree up and shaping the tree and remember I did that on the day before fall.
