There's one in every family: that uber-organized holiday shopper who buys all her presents long before everyone else has even contemplated their Halloween costumes. That person may already have snapped up some of the titles below for gifts, but for everyone else, here's a primer on notable DVDs either just out or coming to store shelves in time for giving (or keeping):
• "Astaire & Rogers Ultimate Collector's Edition": Forget "Dancing With the Stars." Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers were the real deal, which is why it's so nice to see the last five selections in their 10-movie partnership arrive on DVD. Diehards who didn't buy Volume 1 of the collection last year will want this comprehensive box set, which includes all 10 of the pair's films, as well as extras such as the documentary "Astaire and Rogers: Partners in Rhythm." Those seeking only the new films can buy Volume 2, which includes "Flying Down to Rio," "The Gay Divorcee," "Roberta," "Carefree" and "The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle." (In stores)

• "Cars": This charming automotive adventure — featuring the voices of Owen Wilson, Paul Newman and Larry the Cable Guy — comes with several extras, including deleted scenes, at least one Easter egg and a brand new animated short. (In stores)
• "Beverly Hills, 90210: The Complete First Season": Donna Martin graduates ... to DVD. It seems odd that it's taken so long for the gang from the Peach Pit to re-emerge in box-set form. But given the death this year of the show's executive producer, Aaron Spelling, there couldn't be a timelier moment to flash back to the '90s with Brandon, Brenda and Dylan (not to mention Nat). The six-disc set ($54.99) includes all 22 episodes from the first season and a few extras, including commentary by creator Darren Star. Also out: Season 1 of the catfight-infused drama "Melrose Place," for those who were always more partial to Star's other big '90s-era hit. (In stores)
• "Miracle on 34th Street: Special Edition": As far as I'm concerned, Edmund Gwinn is Santa Claus. And the original 1947 "Miracle" (not to be confused with the ill-advised 1994 remake) is one of the finest Christmas movies ever. Fox Home Entertainment has finally released a more robust version of the classic, which features a second disc filled with extras, including a commentary track by star Maureen O'Hara. This might be the year to ask Santa to slide that DVD into your stocking. (In stores)
• "Superman Ultimate Collector's Edition": Can't get enough of that guy in the red cape? Then this is your box set. This monstrosity comes with 14 — count 'em, 14 — DVDs, including the four-disc special edition of 1978's "Superman" and every other installment in the cinematic superhero saga, right up to the two-disc edition of the latest, "Superman Returns." Documentaries and director Bryan Singer's video journals from the "Superman Returns" production are all part of the mix, along with the gift that keeps on giving: "Superman IV: The Quest for Peace." (Coming Tuesday)
• "An Evening With Kevin Smith 2: Evening Harder": Smith fans will no doubt covet this follow-up to his 2002 compilation of pop culture-riffing Q&As. This two-disc set features more question-and-answer fun from the "Chasing Amy" director, recorded during concerts in London and Toronto. And, coincidentally, it comes out the same day as "Clerks II," the sequel to the indie comedy that gave Smith his cinematic start. (Coming Tuesday)
• "St. Elsewhere: Season 1": Before Denzel Washington was an Academy Award winner or Howie Mandel hosted "Deal or No Deal," they appeared in this critically acclaimed hospital drama, which over the years also starred Ed Begley Jr. and Doris Roberts. The debut season of this Emmy Award winner finally arrives on DVD, giving fans of "Grey's Anatomy" and "House" yet another medical staff worth getting to know. (Coming Tuesday)
• "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest": The running time of the year's biggest hit is 150 minutes. But for some, that's still not enough Jack Sparrow to satisfy. Those mateys will be happy to know that, in addition to the basic DVD, a two-disc special edition of this prosperous sequel will be available just in time for the holidays. The latter includes several featurettes, a blooper reel, 19 deleted scenes and three commentary tracks, including one with director Gore Verbinski and Capt. Sparrow himself, Johnny Depp. (Coming Dec. 5)
• "High School Musical: Remix Edition": The question of what to give your Zac Efron-obsessed 10-year-old has been solved. This two-disc set includes the wildly popular Disney Channel musical along with, according to Disney's Web site, "awesome new bonus features that will rock your world." Those wondering why awesome new bonus features are needed when a previous DVD was released less than seven months ago obviously don't understand the money-making power of "High School Musical." (Coming Dec. 5)
• "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: Four-Disc Extended Edition": Apparently Disney can't get enough of the remixing. After releasing two versions of "Narnia" in April, there's another one for the holiday season, this time featuring four discs' worth of material. What can we expect come next spring, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe: Six-Disc Super-Extended Edition"? (Coming Dec. 12)
