Cut your own Christmas trees: The listFor the Journal-Constitution
Published on: 11/18/05
You don't have to be a lumberjack to cut down your own Christmas tree. Just grab a saw and apply some serious elbow grease.
"Cutting is very simple," said Jim Kinsey, owner of the Kinsey family tree farm in Forsyth County. "Just find one you like, get down near the ground and saw."

But just in case you're not up to the task, Kinsey has a bevy of teenagers who will help you fell your tree and get it into or on top of your car for the ride home.
Once there, the rule for keeping your tree healthy is very basic: Keep it well-watered.
"That's the only thing you need to know," said Kinsey. "Never let them dry out, and they'll last a long time. If they do get dry, cut a small piece off the bottom to allow water to be absorbed."
Most growers are skeptical of the theories that additives will prolong the tree's life, said Kinsey.
"I've heard of people adding a penny, sugar, even Coca-Cola," he said. "But none of it has proven to be effective."
