If the Peach Drop seemed more crowded than usual, that’s because it was.

Early estimates that about 100,000 people attended Atlanta’s annual New Year’s fete Wednesday night were revised Thursday to about 175,000 after better security estimates were obtained, said Ashley Hesseltine of 360 Media, a spokeswoman for the Peach Drop. That makes it one of the largest turnouts for the celebration, which was held for a 20th time at Underground Atlanta.

It seems many people found the Peach Drop to be a smart choice for a recessionary New Year’s Eve.

“We think a lot of it has to do with the economy, since it’s a free event,” Hesseltine said.
