State scores: Brooks, Appling suffer first season losses

Both teams fall from ranks of Class AA unbeaten

Two of the top three Class AA teams fell from the unbeaten ranks Friday night.

Martez Christopher ran for 114 yards and a touchdown to lead No. 7-ranked Brooks County (7-1) to a 14-7 victory against second-ranked Fitzgerald (7-1) in a Region 1-AA showdown. Rashad Rose returned a punt 74 yards for another score.

No. 3-ranked Appling County (7-1) suffered a 15-12 loss at the hands of McIntosh County Academy (8-0) in a battle of Region 2-AA unbeatens. Knox Robinson completed 12 of 18 passes for 125 yards, and Darries Robinson rushed for 150 yards, including a 45-yard score, in the winning effort.

Rome 41, Dalton 23: Behind 23-13 at intermission, No. 5-ranked Rome scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to defeat visiting Dalton 41-23. Fullback P.J. Green rushed for 227 yards and four touchdowns as Rome (8-1) wrapped up the subregion title.

Bremen 41, Gordon Lee 0: Clayton McIntosh ran 66 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the game, then added a 46-yard scoring run to pace the Blue Devils (7-1, 4-0). Cal Hardie returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown as time expired in the first half. Marcus Coggins had 104 yards rushing for Bremen, including a 4-yard score.

Brookstone 58, Webster County 0: The Cougars held Webster to 43 yards total offense in improving to 8-0.

Cairo 42, Perry 10: Reginald Bryant ran for 116 yards and three touchdowns as the No. 1-ranked Syrupmakers (7-0, 5-0) coasted over the Panthers (1-7, 0-5). Angelo Pease threw two touchdown passes.

Coffee 35, Valdosta 18: Melvin Loving rushed for 149 yards and four touchdowns as the No. 9-ranked Trojans improved to 7-1. Valdosta fell to 4-4.

Carrollton 21, Central Carrollton 14 (OT): Labron Hudson scored on a 2-yard run in overtime, then Austin Collins intercepted a pass to seal the victory.

Camden County 70, Jenkins 0: Ryan Gergoire threw for two touchdowns as the No. 2-ranked Wildcats (8-0) rolled over the Warriors (2-6). Hayden Boudreaux ran for one touchdown and caught a pass for another.

Early County 7, Albany 0: Linebacker Kajuane Freeman returned an interception 21 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter as Early (1-8) notched its first victory.

Emanuel County Institute 40, Metter 14: Waushan Ealey ran for 218 yards and two scores for the top-ranked Bulldogs (8-0).

Evans 21, Hephzibah 12: Sam Nichols returned a punt 57 yards for a touchdown to lead Evans (8-0, 7-0). Jonathan Finch ran 67 yards for another score and also caught a 47-yard touchdown pass from Troy Griffith.

Flowery Branch 42, West Forsyth 16: Connor Shaw completed 13 of 17 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another 79 yards and a score.

Gainesville 42, Gilmer County 6: Blake Sims threw for two touchdowns as the Red Elephants (8-0) stayed unbeaten. • Lowndes 52, Houston County 14: Troy Braswell rushed for 93 yards and two touchdowns on only four carries to lead the top-ranked Vikings (8-0). Gerald Demps added two rushing touchdowns for Lowndes.

Monticello 27, Putnam 21: Joe Standifer rushed for two touchdowns and Keldrick Davis scored on a 40-yard interception to lead the Hurricanes. Marquez Styles scored on a 55-yard run for Putnam, and Marteze Waller added a 60-yard touchdown run.

North Oconee 3, East Jackson 0: James Pinkerton’s 37-yard field goal in the first quarter held up in this defensive struggle. Brandon Whitlock rushed for 134 yards for the Titans (7-1).

Northgate 35, McIntosh 14: Payton Usher rushed for two touchdowns and returned a kickoff 85 yards for another to lead Northgate (5-3) scoring.

Riverside Military Academy 38, Oglethorpe County 7: Julian Suber rushed for 275 yards and three touchdowns, including a 58-yarder, as Riverside improved to 4-4.

Savannah Country Day 26, Claxton 14: Arice Brown, Antonio Freeman and Jamalcom Morgan led a strong rushing attack for the Hornets (2-6, 2-2) in a Region 3-A East upset. Sharod Freeman returned a blocked punt 3 yards for one touchdown.

Sequoyah 10, Northwest Whitfield 7: Dominique Swope’s 48-yard touchdown run in the first quarter paced the Chiefs (7-1).

Sonoraville 12, Adairsville 7: The Phoenix (7-1) locked up the No. 2 seed in Region 7-AA North. Y.J. Glover threw to Taylor Sims for one touchdown, and Tevarious Washington passed to Ethan McCarley for another score.

Thomas County Central 31, Hardaway 0: The No. 6-ranked Yellow Jackets (7-1) held the Golden Hawks to 27 yards total offense while intercepting four passes. Shawn Bryant rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns.

Westside-Macon 28, Americus-Sumter 0 : Marcus Wilson rushed for 182 yards and two touchdowns as the No. 1-ranked Seminoles (8-0) totaled 327 yards rushing.

Wilcox County 35, Hawkinsville 17: Antonio Marshall rushed for three touchdowns to lead Wilcox (8-0).
