Cartersville High rising senior Donovan Tate is one of six finalists for the Jackie Robinson Award, which is given to the nation's top high school baseball player.
Tate was picked by "Perfect Game" as the nation's top overall prospect during a dinner Tuesday night in Los Angeles, where 38 of the nation's top rising seniors will play in the AFLAC All-American game on Saturday at Dodger Stadium.
"It feels great knowing that [I am] one of the six players that are up for player of the year," Tate said. "It feels great to have the opportunity to come out here and play against the great players in my class. It's a huge opportunity."
Several Georgians will join Tate on the East team, including East Paulding's Zach Wheeler, Drew Steckenrider of Greater Atlanta Christian, Sandy Creek's Braxton Lane and Luke Bailey of LaGrange.
Former Griffin shortstop Tim Beckham, the top overall pick in last June's amateur draft, won MVP honors in last season's game.
The East and West teams, composed of players from 11 states, have practiced at Deadeaux Field at the University of Southern California.
"I'm considering going to USC, so it's been good to play on their field," Tate said. "I'm liking L.A. They treat you like a big-leaguer. All the hard work, staying up late hitting, working on my whole game is starting to pay off."
The winner of the Jackie Robinson Award will be announced during a banquet on Friday.
