Albany — Anne Marie Armstrong would have liked to have had a better performance Friday at Hugh Mills Stadium, but given the circumstances she was satisfied with a win.
Battling a cold all week, the reigning AJC Miss Georgia Basketball award winner mustered enough strength to win the high jump at 5 feet, 2 inches in the Class AA meet.
"My legs are really sore," said Armstrong, a Wesleyan junior. "I didn't have my best or close to my best jumps. I'm just happy I was able to pull it out."
In all Friday, there were three state records set in the field events.
Kell junior Lauren Chambers set a new mark in the shot put with a throw of 46-5 3/4 in AAAAA. Mauri Peoples of Carrollton had a jump of 12-0 in the pole vault to set a new AAA and all-class mark.
Georgia signee Eve Machovec of Dacula had a throw of 148-9 in the discus to set a new AAAA mark and win her third straight discus championship. She finished runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 43-10.
"I'm pleased that I finally got the state record," Machovec said. "It has been my goal since my freshman year to get it. I'm disappointed in not winning the shot put, but I have to move forward — at least that is what I'm telling myself."
Chamblee's Emily Reese closed out her career Friday with her 12th state championship. The Harvard signee has won the state cross-country meet and the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events all four years during her career.
She owns the state records in the 1,600 and 3,200. Friday, she ran the 1,600 in four minutes, 55 seconds.
"I'm going to miss running in Georgia," said Reese, who was presented with a dozen roses to represent each state title by meet director Johnny Seabrooks. "It has been amazing to see all the people in the stands and hear the cheering. I'm going to miss it."
Amanda Winslow of Collins Hill won in the Class AAAAA 1,600. The junior had an all-class record time of 4:48.35 for the victory. It was the third straight year that a Collins Hill runner has won the cross-country, 1,600 and 3,200 events.
"I'm just blown away and stunned with her time," Collins Hill coach Andrew Hudson said.
