It may be six months to a year before a star high school basketball player appears in court to answer an allegation that he and two friends shot a woman with a BB gun.

Al-Farouq Aminu, 17, a Norcross High student and Parade magazine All-American, was released March 29 from jail on $3,500 bond. Because he was allowed bond, Aminu will not have a probable cause hearing, at which a detective would have testified about some of the evidence against Aminu.

The next step in the criminal case is for evidence to be presented to a Gwinnett grand jury for indictment, which could come at any time.

After that, felony cases typically take six to 12 months to wind their way through the court system before they are scheduled for trial, said a Gwinnett County Magistrate Court clerk.

Aminu and fellow Norcross High School basketball players Prince Kent and Quintin Square were arrested last month on charges of felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor criminal trespass. The trio allegedly shot Rebecca Baltich March 14 in front of her home on Jones Bridge Circle in Norcross.

Police said the three teens were sitting in a vehicle when shots were fired and drove away when Baltich's husband, Branden, ran toward his own vehicle and pursued them. He wrote down the license plate of the vehicle the teens occupied, police said.

Aminu, who has a scholarship to Wake Forest, turned himself in March 28 and was freed a day later.

Officials at the Gwinnett County School District have already said Aminu will not face disciplinary action from the school system because the alleged incident did not take place on school grounds.
