For the AJC

Former weight: 230 pounds Current weight: 190 pounds

Pounds lost: 40 pounds Height: 6 feet 2 inches

How long he's kept it off: "I joined Weight Watchers in January of 2009 [and] reached my goal weight in July," says Alba.

Personal life: "I am a national account manager for Heinz North America. I am married to Karen Alba for 19 1/2 years, and we have two daughters, Adriana, 16, and Alyssa,10." They live in Alpharetta.

Turning point: "After a doctor visit in January for my annual physical, I was informed that my cholesterol was extremely high and if I didn't drop it several points in three months, I would have to begin taking cholesterol medication," Alba says."I thought to myself, 'I'm only 37 years old; there is no way I am going to take cholesterol medication.' I started the Weight Watchers program the weekend after seeing my doctor, began exercising, bought a Polar watch to help me on my exercise journey and the rest is history."

Diet plan: He often starts the day with two whole-grain waffles and sugar-free syrup. Lunch is a sandwich or salad. Dinner varies while staying within his points range.

Exercise routine: He lifts weights 3 times per week, runs 5-10 miles three times per week and uses a Polar FT80 fitness cross-training watch. "I travel from time to time for work. It is important to exercise even when you are on the road," he says.

Biggest challenge: "Avoiding a lot of the fatty snacks, fried foods and fast-foods that I ate on a regular basis," he says.

How life has changed: "My life has totally changed," he says. And with a drop in his cholesterol from 248 to 176 points, he's medication-free. "I have more energy, look a lot younger and fit better into my clothing. I am in better shape now than I was as a high school athlete. My doctor was shocked and pleased with my turnaround. My main motivation was wanting longevity so I could spend a full life with my wife and children. Also, I prayed consistently and asked God for the strength to make it through. It worked for me."
