Bird Flu Death Confirmed in China
Chinese health authorities have confirmed that a 19-year-old woman has died of the H5N1 bird flu virus, according to the World Health Organization. The report appeared in a story from Reuters. Experts are worried the virus could mutate into a form that may be transmitted from person to person, but authorities say the woman who died had recently purchased ducks at a market near Beijing.
Company Requests Approval for HPV Vaccine in Boys
Merck has asked the Food and Drug Administration to approve the use of its human papillomavirus vaccine in boys and young men, CNBC reports. The HPV vaccine protects against genital warts and against some strains of the sexually-transmitted virus that may cause cervical cancer.
Nursing Shines in a Bleak Economy
Even in a bad economy, nursing jobs are plentiful and recruiters are so desperate that they’ve been giving away $50 gas cards and free chair massages just to lure experienced nurses in for interviews, The Associated Press reports. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates 233,000 new nursing jobs will open each year through 2016; thousands of nurses leave the job each year.
A Majority of Americans Forego Safety Precautions
More than half of Americans admit they never use a helmet when they’re biking, and a quarter say they don’t apply sunscreen, even if they’re spending the whole day in the sun, according to Consumer Reports National Research Center. Half don’t unplug appliances like toasters that can start fires, Reuters reports.
