Is Snow Mountain worth the money?
We need your first-hand reviews! Has your family been to Stone Mountain’s new snow attraction? Is it worth the money? Would you go back?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
My 5-year-old son is perpetually hoping for snow. And now we have a manmade hill of snow less than five miles from our house. But is Stone Mountain’s new Snow Mountain worth $25 a person for a two-hour session? Here is the pricing and calendar.
My parents drove over to check out the snow last week. (My dad is obsessed with snow and skiing.) They said the hill seemed very icy, and there was a long line to go down the hill. They weren’t sure how many runs you could make in the two-hour time period. However, they talked to families who were on the slope, and they said they were having a great time.
When I was little my parents would take us up to Sky Valley to ski, and as we got older we went for day trips to Cataloochee. I was thinking about taking my 7-and 5-year-olds up for a day this year. The Cataloochee Web site says a weekend day lift ticket is $51 for an adult and $41 for a child 5 to 12. And then to rent equipment is $22 for an adult and $18 for a kid. So for the math impaired, a whole day of playing in the snow in North Carolina would cost $73 for an adult and $59 for a child.
We need to hear from parents that have tried Snow Mountain. What did you think of the experience? What did your kids think? It two hours too short or just about the amount of time a kid is willing to stick with it? What is the youngest age that can down the hill alone? (My parents thought it looked too fast for our 7- and 5-year-olds to go down alone.) Could one parent take two kids down in the double tube?

Friends went and said the lines were too long and the time was too short - only tubed twice the entire time. They waited in line for an hour for each tubing.

$25.00 for 2 hours is ridiculous, especially when you spend MOST of that time in lines. If it was like $35.00 for the DAY, I MIGHT consider it. Until then, I’ll wait for it to snow in my yard.

So you can ski at Cataloochee from 8:30 am to 10:00 pm for $79. My math says that’s about 13-1/2 hours for $5.85 an hour (adult) and $4.37/hour for a child—there’s some math for you.

THIS is problem with Atlanta overall…the incredulous pricing that is associated with events/sights, etc. I know this is a major city, but you can go to Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain, Asheville, etc., and spend far less than that and have an even better time. STOP GOUGING THE PUBLIC!!!

We have friends that went and said they overbook the times. They got 3 tube runs for their $25. When considering cost, remember to add the parking fee to enter the park (unless you have a pass). Our friends were not satisfied with what they got for their money - $100 for them.

I’d be tempted to take them up to North Carolina instead of wasting money at Stone Mountain. On the other hand, the North Carolina resorts aren’t doing so well this season, either — my niece and nephew just got back from Sugar, and said the conditions were awful, too warm and slushy, except for about an hour first thing in the morning. Have you tried taking them ice skating down at Centennial Park? (Although it’s pretty slushy down there, too …)
Also, keep in mind that if you rent your equipment off-site, it’s usually cheaper. And if you went during the week, it’s probably cheaper, still, but whether or not it’s worth taking the kids out of school is your call.

Stone Mnt Park has completely sold out. It used to be a great place to go to enjoy the outdoors, learn some history, and see an anomaly of nature. Since they privatized it turned it into an amusement park in the mid 90’s it’s been disappointing and not worth the money or effort. Everywhere you look they’re trying to stick their hands into your pocket. We paid for the Christmas village and found it to be overpriced and underserved. They should get back to what made Stone Mnt Park special.

I was not going to comment as I have not been, nor know anyone who has but I agree with Sam.
We used to go all the time when our kids were little ( loved it) and even ate at the buffet restaurant on Sundays and holidays. We have not been in years.
I will be in Wisconsin in 2 weeks, want me to bring Walsh some snow…haha!

We took the kids to Sapphire Valley NCduring the holidays for tubing. $22.00 per kid. Very fast tubing. The kids rode at least 15 trips and were totally worn out which made for a quiet ride back to Alpharetta. Scaly was practically bare and Sappires Frosty Falls were great!

Looks like the Branson mentality strikes again. Overpriced low quality tourist trap. My family misses the old park - putt putt, batting cages, beach, ice chalet, etc. And 90% of the park was to do whatever you want. Now they charge for every little thing - and overcharge at that. Walking up the mountain seems to be the only thing worth the price, wait, etc.

Sad,sad, day… When the Creeks,Chickasaws,Choctaws and the Cherokees ruled the mountain, all god’s children were welcome,as long as you respect nature. Now, the Europeans run things. They have defaced the mountain by carving portraits of warmongers on it’s vast facing, and charging money to set foot on the place. They would charge just for looking at the mountain if they could. Greedy capitalist gangsters!

As someone who goes to stone mountain park 3 or 4 times a week, i totally disagree about the park not being a great place for families. I do agree about their pricing though.
I can’t tell you the last time i spent a dime there though. For my family and I we use the park for hiking, boating, fishing, and picnics. Its a beautiful place. I don’t care for cross roads, but that revenue is used to maintain the rest of the park, so I am happy for the tourists. (just don’t take over anymore of the park)
I will be taking my 5 year old this weekend to try the snowmountain thing. Until then, i can’t comment on it specifically.

We went on New Years Day and loved it. It was an extended part of my daughter’s birthday gift. The two of us and 13 of our closest family members and friends. The tubing was fast and fun. We were able to walk directly on when we first arrived, but by the time we got ready to leave there was about a 30 minute wait in line which was not too bad. The children also really enjoyed the snow play area where the snow was shooting out of the machines and everyone was making snow men and having snow ball fights. The best part was they gave each of us a free pass to come back once either this month or next month (Not sure if they are still doing that). So I would say getting two trips out of one ticket price is more than fair.

My family and I went this past weekend. Though we only got 3 runs in the 2 hours, the ticket gets you in to all other attractions/events in the park for no extra charge. We took advantage of the cable car, the train, the 4-D movie, and the barn. It was an all day experience and we had a blast. It’s worth the money if you make a day of it.

I agree 100% with Steve.
I have been going out to Stone Mountain for almost 30 years now, and I can find plenty to do that doesn’t cost an arm and leg.
I doubt we will hit Snow Mountain, as the price is a little too much for me. Coming from Ski Country out west, I can’t see paying that much to glide down fake snow…….

Went to Snow Mountian last Saturday. Cost me $117.00 for 4 tickets reserving 2 hours of tubing and parking fee. We were able to tube down the hill three times. Actually stood in line after one run for an hour to get back up the hill. The park controlls the amount of tickes sold for a two hour session, they may want to cut the ticket sales in half for the sessions. I think that three runs down the hill in two hours for that kind of money is quite a ripp off. This is a memory not worth repeating. Very dissapointed and would not reccomend this to anyone.

Blue Devil,
What changed is that the Park used their own lake water to make the snow rather than the city water supply.

We thought is was too crowded to enjoy any part of it. We made 2 runs and the kids didn’t want any part of standing in the line again. My feelings are it is falsely advertised, overpriced, and then you are nickel and dimed to death once you arrive. It was nice that the rest of the park was included which kept the trip from being a total disaster. Also a problem was the entire staff elsewhere in the park was not onboard to help make the day pleasant. We will definately look elsewhere for our snow experineces in the future.

You see people jogging and walking with their dogs all the time.
Cate Lawrenceville has a TON of parks you can take the dog to.

I am against anything at Stone Mountain Park. That used to be a lovely state park where you can go to relax and spend time in a quite setting. Now is is nothing more that a cheap imitation of 6 Flags…and if you are lower than 6 flags then you have gone way down the list.

As long as we’re on the Stone Mountain topic…I took my kids on the train ride on New Year’s Day (a tradition for us) and the volume of the music was terrible! Horrendous….we literally could not talk to each other as the music came through tinny speakers. There was an Asian family on the train who had to cover their ears during the entire trip. What is wrong with taking a trip with no noise? Just listening to the train itself….
We’ve been taking that train for 10-plus years but this may have been our last.

Well, every summer, we have a HUGE family picnic out at the Mountain. We go to a secluded spot that alot of people don’t know about. I have been going to this same spot for close to 30 years now.
We all bring our coolers full of food and drinks, and we grill out. The kids play on the mountain and in the stream and we actually set up a Badmitton set and play for hours. Then at dusk, we gather everything up and head over to the lawn to watch the laser show.
The cost? $7.00 to get into the park. That’s it. We bring our own food and drinks, and we are there from about noon until after the laser show.

My husband and I took our 4 1/2 year old on New Year’s Eve. It was obviously WAY oversold, as we had to wait in line for 1 1/2 hours to tube ONCE. Since we could only tube within the allotted 2 hour period, we did not have time to get back in the line for more - the line extended out of the gate to the Snow Mountain area. While my husband waited in line, I took my son to the play area, only to find ice covering white astro turf. There wasn’t enough snow to build a snowman, although everyone in there was trying hard to do so. And, the snow making machine was blowing ice chunks, some of which hit my son in the face when he looked up. Needless to say, we were very disappointed in this experience, and outraged that, with today’s dismal economy, they would charge $25 per person - even for the children - for such poor execution.

I agree $25 is a lot, but if it helps any, you can also ride the train & if it’s before 5pm, ride the skylift to the top and back down. I am not sure if the miniature golf and 4D theater are open. If they are you can also do those.

Good Morning!
I grew up 5 miles away from St. Mtn., and it seemed like I was there every week. We used to picnic there all the time, and go for putt putt, the batting cages, and the ice skating rink (wasn’t it ice? or roller? I honestly can’t remember!) The annual pass was a fixture on our family car every year.
We now don’t live near as close, and the last time we went I was shocked to see the changes. Disoriented actually! I’m glad to read that some still love to hike and picnic, but I think I remember that the old putt putt, batting cages, and skating rink were gone. In fact, I just went to the website and it’s billing itself as a “theme park”.
For me personally, being a Atlanta native, I have no desire or expectation to play in “snow” here. I look forward to warm sunny days when I can swim! I’m glad that some enjoyed the tubing, but I won’t be spending the money or time to play in fake snow. (I keep accidently typing “snot” instead of snow! ha ha, guess you know what I’ve been dealing with here w/ baby!)
Maybe we should take a trek out to picnic again…but now we have another park a stone’s throw from our neighborhood, so we’ll keep going there instead.
Anytime we can enjoy the outdoors is a good day, so I hope you guys all have fun!

What ever happened to the good old days of Stone Mountain Park? I remember the ice skating rink, put put golf, ect… If they’re hurting for revenue, why not rent out bicycles or something? I think they’re ruining the park with all the things they add-on these days…

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Like thinking dry white tomatoes in the stores are the same as seasonal ones from the garden. This whole “added attraction” is forced, fake and expensive—not to mention the added drain on a water supply just now beginning to heal. Give me, please, the beauty that is already there.

Supply and demand will determine what people will pay and how long they will wait in line. If they deliver a good product, people will ante up the $25 again; if not, they won’t come back. Nobody held a gun to anyone to make them pay the $25.

$21 PER PERSON to see the lights? WOW I would NOT pay that. Their lights aren’t worth the cost.
At least Lake Lanier charges by the vehicle. AND you can get $5.00 off coupons from Publix.
We pile into the back of a pick up truck to do the lights at Lanier. There’s usually about 10-15 of us.

I took my mom, brother, 2 nieces, and 2 cousins to Snow Mountain the first day it was open on New Years Eve. I have to say, I was kind of disappointed with what I found - extremely long lines for tubing, one general snow “play” area, and icy snow.
We were able to tube down twice within our time frame. Afterwards, we hit the snow “play” area which was ok except the snow was icy and I didn’t think they had enough snow on the ground. I understand it was the first day and they were probably working out the kinks. Plus, Stone Mountain was kind enough to allow us to re-book for free. They sent an email to anyone who booked the first two days (NYE and New Years) which apologizes and allows them to re-book for any Friday through February for free. I may take them up on it and see if they have resolved some of the issues that they encountered during the first couple of days. My overall opinion - it was worth going once but wouldn’t pay to go again.

Has anyone heard of a new law that goes into effect 2/10/09. The bill is HR-4040. Some websites are calling it National Bankruptcy Day. Many are taking it as it will be illegal to give away child items. This law will effect daycares, churches, schools, home based day care and anyone that makes children products.

We went on New Year’s Day. As a native New Englander, it chaffed me to pay for snow, but my poor southern children were dying to play in snow so it was a Christmas present for them. They really enjoyed it, but we only tubed 3 times in the 2 hours. We have park memberships so it was “only” $15 each for us. However, I do have a 17 month old who was not at all enchanted with mittens or snow. I ended up walking him around the park. The small children’s area did have a small slope and plastic sleds to play on, and he really did enjoy his few rides, as did my 6 year olds. We will rebook for the free tickets we were offered, but I wouldn’t pay again. I agree with the statement that it was way oversold. You shouldn’t have to stand in line for an hour for one tube ride. The other 2 times were much shorter, but when there was still 15 minutes left in our time (and we could have whipped through the line one more time at that point) they let people for the next 2 hour block get in line. Our time would have been up well before we got to the front.

Let me start off by saying that the kids had a blast. As a parent that is one of the most important things, but from my point of view, it was a complete rip off. You are tromping around in mud waiting in a long line to pay in ice. The attraction itself is not worth the cost at all, but your kids will have a great time.

Of Stone Mountain Park’s 3,200 acres, approximately 50 acres encompass the crossroads area.
Stone Mountain Park is still a state park. The state leases an area in the park to a company that operates Theme Parks.
Prior to that company’s involvement, the park’s upkeep had gone way down.
While I don’t like tourist traps as much as the next guy, I am perfectly fine with Crossroads existing lease deal as long as it helps to pay the police, the power bills, and everything else involved with maintaining a beautiful place like that.
I can (And often do) throw my canoe in the back of my truck and be on the lake over there within 15 minutes. Within another 15 I can be completely isolated watching deer, racoons, heron, and ducks while floating on the water. I feel as though I am deep in the north Georgia mountains.
If you can’t find something of enjoyment there, I don’t know what to tell you.

An “all attractions” pass at Stone Mtn. is $25 pp, $20 p kids 3-12, so going for Snow Mountain is actually a decent deal if you do the other stuff too (skyride, train, barn, etc.). The lines for tubing were way too long - we only got to go 2x in an hour. But, the rest is really fun. My kids were small enough for the Lil Angels area with small hill sledding - almost no lines. They loved building snowmen & throwing snowballs at the targets. They loved the fun at Stone Mountain after our 2-hour session was complete. If you would pay that much for the other parts of Stone Mountain, this is like an added bonus for the day.

@Wendy, I’m sorry, but your immigrant family moved here with all the other immigrants and wiped out all my family that lived here. Remember? We didn’t want you people here at the time, either, but tried to accommodate until you wiped us out with the small pox infections you carried. If that wasn’t enough you drove us away from our homes where we’d been living for centuries onto the reservations. Now you call this your home and you forget how you raped us. Your ancestors were looking for the same thing that all immigrants look for - a better life, especially for their children. At least they’re not killing the local population like your ancestors did.

Pay attention parents.
Last week, a man on my street walked to his vehicle with an open beer in his hand, hopped in and drove off. Children are in the yard….HELLO?

Another thing.
I don’t understand this “thug” thing or “too many immigrants”.
I have spent countless hours in the park in the last 10 years. Not one time has ANYONE said anything rude to me, or accosted me or my family in anyway at all.
Most people smile and talk as they use the park for its most popular purpose which is exercise.

I agree with Steve. My family and I go to the park all the time for the free recreation and exercise. Ivve never had experience with so called “thugs” or immigrants. I would not pay for Snow Mountain, but Stone Mountain Park is a great place for outings.

My family of four went to Snow Mountain and enjoyed the different activity. However, I feel there should be a lower price for children under the age of 12. It is still up for debate as to whether we will be returning again this year.

Hey, Wendy, looks like we left one too many of the original inhabitants. I’m with you. If the temperature ever drops we can go sell smallpox blankets at Snow Mountain.

It’s sad to see so many negative, ignorant comments. You cannot tell a person’s immigrant or legal resident status simply by the color of their skin, or standing in line next to them at an attraction. :( It’s sad that this is a parent’s forum because MJG is right…. our children are watching us.

I am ALWAYS all over the place. Usually my teachers tell me they have never seen anyone with so much energy.
Today I visited a school for the first time and one of the teachers told me they could not believe how quickly I shifted gears and kept moving with 80 Kindergartners right in my hand…love what I do!

Cate….I love Tribble Mill in Grayson. Great for dogs and kids. Just make sure you clean up after your dog. It makes me sick to see people neglecting to clean up after their dogs. Little Mulberry in Dacula is fabulous as well.
Wendy…I am so sad for you. It must be hard to go through life so negative and ignorant.

We just went to Stone Mountain and did the snow tubing this weekend, Jan. 18th.. We had a blast. Though a little pricey for a family of four we were able to get in 5 snow tube runs. After our 2 hour session we played in the snow area a while. We devoted our entire 2 hours to tubing as not to burn up our session time in the snow area. You can do that after the tubing. Our ticket for $25 included the skylift and minigolf. I think it was worth the money when those things were thrown into the ticket costs. My kids’ loved it and we’d do it again. We did have a worker tell me that when it first opened they did not do a maximum capacity because they didn’t know how many people would come. People were only getting 1-2 tubing times. She said they now have the capacity to 550 max. per session. The lines moved pretty quick to us to be a sold out session. We went on a Sunday at a noon session. Definitely would go again.
