Would you rather give up the Internet or sex?
A new survey says almost 50 percent of woman would take the Web over the bed. How about you?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The study asked more than 2,000 adults what they would rather give up for a period of two weeks, the Internet or sex.
The Daily News reports: “The survey also found:
58 percent of adults would give up watching TV for two weeks rather than have to give up Internet access for only one week
65 percent of adults said they cannot live without Internet access.”
Would you rather have: the Internet or sex? What could you give up easily for two weeks? What could you never give up for two weeks?

Theresa,
How do you get the AJC to pay you for copy/paste articles? This blog is front page linked, so you must be getting a paycheck for no work. Copied work is all that is ever here.

Tough question for those who use the internet in their jobs each day!
Would this be a part 2 question to last week’s: Will the recession delay your baby plans?
I could easily give up TV over the internet…I probably could give TV up period.
This should be interesting!

joey…I am not the authority on this but even Neal Boortz quotes other people and makes comments about them on his show…then callers phone in and they discuss the topic at hand and he has a talk show!
I am GUESSING that someone pays him a LOT more than Theresa gets paid ( hope you get a chuckle out of this T).
Really, it is none of ANYONE’S business what the AJC pays Theresa for…is she still has the blog they must be happy with her.
When anyone makes a jab at her…she probably does not care. If there are only 10 or less posts per day, THEN she may need to get busy and be more creative…has that happened?
I enjoy seeing how many posts there are each day…sometimes the topic seems dull to me but LOTS of others are interested…she might know her stuff..ya think?
I have folks all the time who say ( about me): “they PAID her ( HOW MUCH)for that presentation?”
Yep and I cash my check at the bank like anyone else does. Hopefully, I can continue to do so.

I would give up the internet in a heartbeat!!!!
The only time I use it is at work, and the VERY rare occasion at home. Once my child has gone to college, the computer will be sold. She will have a laptop, and I will have an iPhone.
If I need the internet, I will use it at work.

I could easily give up TV. I watch 4 shows per week. Two have just been canceled. As long as I don’t have to give up books, I could give up the internet if the choice was between internet and sex.
Even with a serious facebook addiction, there is NO WAY I am giving up sex.

I’m a 31-y.o. female, and I cancelled cable a few months ago because we hardly watched it, so I know I can go without that easily.
However, if I had to choose between the internet (for personal use purposes) and sex, I’d rather give up sex, lol.

jct If I may inquire, what is it about Facebook that you are addicted to? For some reason, I don’t understand the fascination with Facebook. (But then again, I’m old fashioned).
I’m not being mean, I’m just curious as to why people get hooked on Facebook?
Thanks. I appreciate your response.

JJ - I can’t answer for jct, but I think for some people who are into places like Facebook/Myspace it’s the interactions with friends online. With busy lives that everybody seems to lead these days, sometimes virtual friendships can be easier to maintain.
I’m not heavily into Facebook or Myspace myself (over 90% of my friends on there are either RL friends or family members), but I have friends and family who are and I’ve heard that from them before on why they’re more likely to keep in touch with even family members on there online rather than offline sometimes.

Everybody has their own methods of how they keep in touch with people, and, hey, if we all did things the same way, what a boring world this would be!
We had a visitor at our house a few months ago who was actually shocked that I had a corded phone plugged into the jack in one of the rooms. They just couldn’t believe that “in this day and age” that we weren’t 100% cordless phones…until I reminded them that when the power goes out, it helps to have a phone on-hand to use to call for repairs/assistance/etc. (Call me weird, but I’d rather use the home phone to call on things like that rather than use up minutes holding on the cell phone)

@JJ
Trig pretty much covered why you become addicted. It is way easier to keep in touch with friends and family.
You can make private photo albums that you choose to share the photos with. This the main communication method to keep in touch with high school and college friends.
As I stated before, I am originally from the New England. The majority of my friends and family still reside in the up there. It’s an excellent tool. On Sunday while facebooking I completed laundry, cooked dinner and started reading a book while having conversations with friends on-line.
I talk on the phone a lot for my job. That is the last thing I want to do when I get home.
It’s different strokes for different folks.

Off topic but relates to your last post:
tig…I am older than dirt…LOL…what is a virtual friendship? Is this someone you will never meet but are friends with online?
I do not get this as I know folks in 46 states and cannot imagine “hanging out” with someone I do not know… online.
Am I just dumber than dumb? ( we already know some would say so…hahaha!)
I love to make new friends and prefer to spend time with them in person. Plus…do you really know who these folks are?
I get e-mails every day from folks with whom I have worked and enjoy it since I do know themand can dash a quick e-mail back.
I also have folks who request me to join their facebook ( all the time) whom I do not know but they know me as they have heard me speak at a conference. I have no idea who they are but they know me…I may be too old to get the point here.

Well, on the one hand, there ARE ‘adult’ sites…
On the other, there really isn’t much better than the feel of a woman’s body on yours.
If I had to give up one of these two particular options, permanently, gotta give up the Net. Even though I’m a computer geek, I can find other things to occupy my time and other occupations to work in.
Now, if the question was which would you give up for a week, a month, a year, etc:
A week per month I could give up sex. Heck, for the next couple of decades I do that anyway. Same with a month. (12 weeks a yr is roughly 3 months…) Year or longer it goes back to my original answer of giving up the Net.
By Tig

jct - I do the same thing with the photo albums. It’s so much easier (and cheaper) to upload pictures to a private album than to pay to get them printed in duplicate when I want to show pictures of things my daughter has been up to.
I’m the same way with the phone. After coming home from work, I’m notorious for screening calls with the answering machine unless it’s somebody that I really need to speak to.
Oddly enough, I’ll still get online (SecondLife is my ‘drug’ of choice) and sometimes talk voice to people there, but I’d rather do that (or use skype) and talk to LD friends and family for free than use the regular phone.

motherjanegoose - by ‘virtual friendship’ I mean a friendship that’s maintained online as opposed to regularly calling on the phone and getting together for [insert activity here] with them on occasion (or other offline activities that cost money/time).
I’ve been online in some capacity since 1992, and I’m still friends with people that I originally met back in my early days online, some of which we’ve still never met, but still maintain contact through e-mails, instant messaging, and once-in-a-blue-moon phone calls.

OK, I get it.
My entire family, and all of my friends are here in the metro area. I guess that’s why I don’t need to keep up with Facebook.
I have two friends who live out of the state, but I usually e-mail them to catch up.
I still perfer a phone conversation, or a face-to-face.
I’m also not so super busy that I cannot keep in touch. I have ALOT of free time and enjoy a good phone conversation.
Tig My mom still has “wall phones”. When I try to make a call from one of those phones, I keep looking for the “send” button. ha ha…..it’s almost like a foreign object to me. We don’t have land lines at my house.

thanks tig…I have family and friends all over the country but am too old fashioned to get this…I actually mail notes to them sometime with a real stamp LOL.
We actually have family in 8 different states. My daughter uses facebook with her friends, cousins and my son at college. When we say we have not heard from him…she will say… “oh, he was alive yesterday….on facebook.” WOW…I am so relieved!
Years ago, we were at a condo in FLA and I asked my son to get some ice out of the freezer. He looks in it and says…”what do I do?’ I look in there to see the blue ice cube containers and say, “just take one out and pop out the ice cubes…” He replies,”how do you do it?” Then, I knew I was really old as I grew up with those crazy ice cube trays…even the metal ones with the lever!
Back to the topic everyone…I will leave you alone…have fun!

Okay I am only 36 and I feel as old fashioned as MJG and JJ! My cell phone only makes calls (no pics, internet, music) and I just got my first ipod last month! I think Facebook and MySpace are ridiculous. Whatever happened to REAL friendships and calling people on the phone, going to visit, meeting for lunch, etc.? If you are so busy that you can’t have a one on one conversation with a friend, you need to rethink your choices in life. I am with JJ….all my family is here and the friends that I do have that are out of state I keep in touch with through email and the phone.
I could certainly give up the Internet. I am trying to get my husband to tone down the amount of ESPN he watches, but that is not working out at all!!! Maybe now that college football season is over he’ll turn it off and get off his keister and do something else!! Maybe I should give him the sex/TV choice! hahahahaha!

motherjanegoose - I think I remember real stamps…aren’t those what we used to use almost daily before online bill paying came around?
Just kidding (mostly), but my mom likes to tease me because I can never remember what the current cost of a stamp is and, more than once, I’ve had cards to friends/family returned to me for insufficient postage because I didn’t include enough 1-cent stamps. (The last time it happened, I stuck a 27-cent stamp on the envelope and didn’t even stop to think about it before posting it, whoops!)
We have plastic ice cube trays at work, and I’m honestly starting to think that nobody refills them other than a small handful of us because they don’t know what to do!
By Tig

Kathy - I do have offline friendships as well, but it’s still easier and cheaper to send e-mails back and forth with those currently living out of the area than it would be to call them every single day to talk. Even for local folks, with my schedule + their schedule + individual kids/family schedules, things don’t always mesh out even if they’re local. I have quite a few friends who are SAHMs, and with me working fulltime, my free time is the opposite of theirs so it isn’t just a matter of choices in life or priorities. I would love to see them more often, but I’m not going to quit my job just in order to do so. A friend is somebody who is still there for you even if you don’t get to see each other or talk as often as you might like.
(Eek, sorry for the long paragraph!)

Hey JJ — Facebook is also good because you don’t wake up kids wiht the phone or bother families during their bedtime rituals — If a mom is on then I know she’s ok to talk — also you can leave messages and they can get back to you at their convenience. I was looking for a recipe and left a note for a mom friend — I chatted with keith two nights ago — we hadn’t talked in like two days by phone and she happened to be on when I was on so we caught up that way — I have caught up with a bunch of high school and college friends through it —It kind of hurts the Christmas card htough because then everyone has seen your photos of your kids.

Theresa - Very true about convenience!
Another nice thing about keeping in touch with friends and family online — Several family members have started using evite to send out invitations instead of sending them though the mail because that way they know when somebody has read the invitation and they can easily both RSVP and make comments as appropriate if needed. Much easier than dealing with lost invitations and hurt feelings thanks to the postal system!

The great thing about Facebook for me is being able to keep up with friends from North GA that I haven’t seen in some cases in YEARS. (Some since HS, some even longer!)
I’ve also reunited with a lot of the people I met in college, including both my work at KSU and with the honor society I was heavily involved in back then.
And my brother and I have a never ending poke war going on. We can go months at a time without actually saying a word to each other, but everytime we long in and there is a poke, we poke back. Just to let the other know we’re still around.
But I have a major Facebook/Myspace dichotomy: By and large, Facebook is North GA and Myspace is South GA.
The exception being my political profile on Myspace. It has friends from all over the place, though I’ve never actually met any of them.

Tig — two thoughts —- I’m on Facebook with most of my cousins and aunts and uncles so it’s a really nice way to stay in touch with our extended family — We found our my cousin was engaged on Facebook — it’s also an easy way for me to share medical updates on my brother with all the family — he’s having a heart transplant hopefully sometime this year —
on the evites — the evites rock and are so easy and convenient — plus they have cute designs — My non-computer girlfriend is having a new year’s eve party and had me set up her evites — it turned out super cute!
I’m on the computer a lot!! I’ve definitely spent more time on the computer lately than having sex. — we’ve all been sick —

I’m 44 and love myspace. It keeps me in touch with relatives that otherwise I would never hear from. I have a Facebook, but I’m a long way from being an addict — if I check it twice a week, I’m doing well (but I do have Facebook alerts sent to my phone, so maybe that’s cheating … :_)
With family and friends spread out all over the world, it’s wonderful. Prom pictures of the daughter were seen instantly all over the world; pictures from our recent trip to New York, ditto. It’s a nice way to see what’s important to your kids and their friends that day (no, neither my 20 or my 17 year old care if I see their Facebook). Heck, my mother-in-law had a Facebook page before I did — she wanted to keep up with her grandchildren! It’s an easy way to share pics, and pop off quick messages. There’s no one on my Facebook that I haven’t known for years.
Sex or internet — no contest. If I have to, I can always mail a letter … :-) But I’m such an information w******* that I think I’d go through severe withdrawal.

My best friend lives in NJ. We have coffee over FB. I would like for us to be able to dish in person. We still dish just in a different way. MILF Hunter. I am a woman. And I DO wear some “mens” clothes sometimes. You have a problem with that? I’ll bet you don’t.

I’m with you, CD; all you folks that are lucky enough to have virtually ALL your famly and friends locally please stop sneering at those of us who don’t and use facebook keep connected. I have NO family here in Georgia, moved here three years ago; most of my family is in Florida with others scattered from Boston to Seattle. When I go to Facebook the first thing I see is what my family and friends are doing, and I chat online with them all the time. MJG,on-line chatting is MUCH better than e-mail for staying in touch because it’s a real-time conversation. We also talk on the phone all the time; it’s just another way to stay in touch when talking is not convenient. And those of you who knock us facebook users for no face to face communication, how mean of you; don’t you think I would MUCH rather see my children face to face instead of online? of COURSE i would..

MILF Hunter….you and Becky might make a really nice couple. I think Becky needs to be on an online sex blog or something. I think yo mama needs to wash your mouth out with soap young lady. Potty mouth….potty mouth.

Interesting….and it ultimately depends on the type of mens clothes she wears.
If there is not a shred of femininity to her clothes….not interested…..if you are talking Jenifer Aniston on the cover of a magazine in nothing but a man’s tie….hell yes.

To be honest the question was could you give up the internet for a short time frame. People are getting more and more unhealthy because of the internet and spend a lot of time on it just for something to do. That is not a good thing.

So I’m guessing by the responses here, that NO ONE is willing to give up Internet Sex. ;)

Sounds like the start of a completely new topic ;)
It’s almost too bad the original survey didn’t include that as an option!

You can find more porn in thirty seconds on the Internet than you can find on TV at 2:00 in the morning.
Which is interesting considering how some religious nuts shun TV but somehow think the Internet is completely safe.
I prefer the “real” thing with JJ….

CD, the topic is could you give up sex..So if you have a topic about giving it up, what’s so wrong with talking about it? I don’t need to be on a online sex blog, thanks for your concern though..
Not speaking openly about sex is why Americans have the highest rate of unwed mothers/teenagers having babies..We are afraid to talk about something that is natural for all humans to have..
I’m also sorry that you don’t have a healthy sex life..Because it’s something that you would enjoy..

Becky The sames goes for nudity. I get so tickled at people who get embarrassed by the naked body.
News flash - we all have one!!!!
I don’t know why people freak out about it. I myself could give up clothing.
Now THERE’s a topic I’d like to see (un)covered. ha ha ha
What do you think about that MILF?

Becky you have nailed the sexx problem. Sex ed is not taught so kids have to figure it out for themselves. Great idea that works! As a mom I realized my daughter needed to know about birth control. I didn’t like th idea but I was realistic.

I have a great job that requires me to be on the internet for a good portion of each day. I am also a person that likes to stay informed so I am constantly looking at the news.
But in no way would I give up sex for the internet. I would find a new line of work. Any person that says they would give up sex is A) not having sex or B) not very good at it so it would not matter either way.

@ Moonbeam - never said I was “leaning” on the Internet - I just said I wouldn’t give it up right now since I’m not getting much in the other department.
Have a good evening.

I leave the house to work on my kids’ holiday party and you guys get out of hand. We will cool off with tomorrow’s topic — I’m planning to do the recipe swap tomorrow (unless something newsy breaks) so get your recipes ready!
MILF Hunter — You better be on your best behavior — The AJC got a complaint about your login name — I defended you and said you were a good contributor (for the most part) —- I’m not sure what they have decided about your moniker — so behave!

Can’t wait to see the direction this topic heads in…one thing about this blog is you can always count on detours ( those who whine are not clever enough to think outside the box but think they have to stay on topic)

Somewhat on topic, a coworker’s Marine husband is coming home today after being in Iraq for the past year or so. She’s taking a 4 day weekend… may not be back until 2009! Something tells me the Net is going to be about the LAST thing on her mind…

I am definitely a ‘net junkie, but I would not want to commit to 2 weeks with no sex. My husband travels to Europe a lot, so we do that enough as it is. :( I can do without the Internet for personal use for a week or two.
That said, I’d give up TV before either. The only thing I watch besides football is ER, and it’s going off anyway.
