Does seeing Georgia play the Gators beat out seeing your kids trick-or-treat?

The Georgia-Florida game is this Saturday afternoon. Trick-or-treating is Friday night. What’s a Georgia fan who is also a parent to do?

The timing of the Georgia-Florida game on Saturday has presented a tricky decision for many Dawg fans who also happen to be parents: Should they miss trick-or-treating to get down to Jacksonville for that game?

I guess a really devoted parent could drive down either late Friday night or very early Saturday morning but that would seem to defeat some of the fun and pageantry of the event. But it really does stink to miss your kids dressed up for Halloween.

Which is more important the memory of your daughter dressed like a little lamb or the memory of Knowshon Moreno jumping over some Gator’s head?

Will you or your spouse be missing trick-or-treating to head to Jacksonville for the Georgia-Florida game?

Sold my tickets to the game many months ago so we will be doing the trick or treat thing, as usual!

Do you actually use your brain when you come up with these rediculous topics to discuss???? Or do you just “use the force?”

If you were raised in the South and attended one of these football/party good ole boy schools, knock yourself out - forget your kids. Relate to a school known more for its football than academics.

Are you kidding me? Is there a debate over placing time with your family for Halloween or going down to tailgate and pound some beer?

Spend time with your children - not the stupid football game.

Most men aren’t into “pageantry”. THat said spend time with the kiddies. they are only that age once and cathc the game on TV or radio.

The game is on TV so we will trick or treat tomorrow night, and have friends over Saturday and do our own tailgating in the driveway. Fire up the grill and ice down the beer.

Well, my ‘pageantry’ has always been at home - for many years, there was nothing better than listening to Munson on the radio during ANY game, but particularly the big ones, including FL.

And considering that T loves halloween more than any kid I’ve ever met, I doubt she would let me do anything that interfered with Oct 31 anyway.

That said, we will probably be having our friends over to watch the game on TV, and who knows - there may even be a cocktail or two involved…

Any true southerner knows College Football is more important than some heathen celebration and we teach our kids the same. If a parent, or child has to miss one stupid night of gluttony, no big deal. It’s not like they can only trick or treat once in a childhood.

You’re joking, right? Are there really folks out there so irreparably warped that a college football game demands a higher priority than sharing a piece of childhood with their kids?

We’re taking our 8 year old son out Frisay night in Augusta, GA. Then, I’m leaving at 6:30 AM Saturday morning with my Dad from Augusta to drive down to the game, and we’ll drive back to Augusta immediately after the game is over.

I’m with the guys (Numbers, Nice & Sttan) on this one, no football game is more important than spending time with your kids…That football game will be on TV & it will be talked about for weeks, so you aren’t going to miss anything about it..

Hope that all that taek the kids out, have a very safe & happy Halloween..

Well…..I certainly hope Theresa that this topic wasn’t written out of a personal dilema. Surely to GOD Michael isn’t missing the kids’ big night because he feels the need to go to JAX. You know me….I’m as big a fan as any. We live and breathe all things UGA in our home. Heck…most of us are dressing as some UGA monster:) My costume is a dog with a gator head sticking out of the stomach….actually 3 of us opted to do that. Should be cute:) But neither of us would ever choose to go to a game in lieu of a family night such as this. Thats just crappy….Besides, this is the first Haloween in a long time that is on Friday night!! No stressing about showers and getting up early the next morning….just blissful late-sleeping and figuring out which candy to swipe from the kiddies’ bags:) Ah…good times.

I’d send the husband with friends and my blessing and stay home to trick-or-treat with the kids. Let’s face it, for kids, this is the second most important holiday on the calendar, second only to Christmas (P.C. Disclaimer: “for those Christians who celebrate Christmas”) The “pageantry” of a football game is completely lost on me. It will be on TV, and I can watch it curled up in my favorite chair, cozy by the fire, sipping a glass of wine and probably see it better than most of the people at the stadium.

We are all piling into the car tonight, and driving to Jacksonville. We have a hotel tonight through Sunday. We will find a neighborhood down there for our kids to trick or treat at, then Saturday we all go to the game!!!

It’s tradition in our family to go to this game, so we talked it over with the little ones, and viola, we have their costumes already packed, and ready to go. We are even going to decorate the hotel room when we get there, for Halloween.

The kids are SO excited……..

Numbers:

Ummm…. Halloween rolls around on the same day EVERY year. So unless your kid is a newborn (that won’t remember it anyway) and for some awful reason doesn’t live for 365 more days, you WILL have your kid on Halloween again. It aint exactly like you’re missing his first step or some other such event that happens ONCE.

By Becky

October 30, 2008 11:45 AM | Link to this

Jeff, ummm, doesn’t this stupid football game come around every year also? And NO Halloween doesn’t come around the same day every year, it comes around the same date every year..

Any childhood memory is better than football. So when you & T have kids, you leave them to trick or treat on their own, so that you can go watch people throw a leather ball & watch others get drunk..Real memories..

By Numbers Guy

October 30, 2008 11:50 AM | Link to this

Jeff - I admit my response made the assumption that the child was young enough to put real importance on Halloween. You only get a limited number of those years, and so a limited number of these opportunities.

Last I checked, these two teams meet every year as well, so there’ll be other opportunities there.

Opting for a football game over experiencing things with your kids is, IMHO, a true sign of cranio-rectal inversion.

I note you’re making the same call for T’s sake, no? And she’s not even a kid.

I love Halloween, and I’m a Dawg fan. But I don’t think folks really do have to choose, just plan accordingly.

  • Delta has 11 flights a day from Atlanta to Jacksonville, so an early flight Saturday would work for a parent going without their kids.

  • Parents taking their kids to the game could probably find a mall or someplace in Jacksonville to take them trick or treating.

  • Or, for those without tickets, you can watch the game from home.

Or you could try to do both — leave early Friday and drive down to St. Simons if there are any rooms left. The island is largely residential and great for trick-or-treating. Take the family to the game on Saturday, or if the kids are too young/don’t enjoy it, let the diehard parent go to the game while the other stays with the kids and enjoys the beach (or drive to Jekyll to visit the fantastic Sea Turtle Center). And on your way out Sunday morning go ahead and make a reservation for next year when Halloween and GA-FL will likely land on the same day.

It’s not a hard choice…My parents have never taken me trick or treating in my 20 years. We’d get left with our Aunt while my parents were in JAX. That is, until they started taking us with them. And, it’s much more fun that trick or treating!

WOW…I forgot all about this but I do have something to share on this topic.

When my kids were 4 and 9, I had a meeting in Anaheim at the Disneyland complex on November 1st. In September, I asked my kids if they wanted to join me as we would have to fly out on Halloween and miss the trick or treating. My daughter ( 4) was in a quandry but her brother finally convinced her when her said, “MOM WILL BUY YOU YOUR OWN BAG OF CANDY…BUT SHE CANNOT BUY YOU DISNEYLAND…COME ON!”

    Yes…we all went.

FYI…this same child is 21 and WILL be at the game on Saturday…hope he makes it home safely!

    Trivia question:

What state celebrates their state day with a holiday ( no school) each November 1st and no children have to go to school after eating all that candy and having a sugar fit. They can trick or treat late and sleep in too! No fair looking it up…does anyone know off the top of their head? I was told this by the teachers there years ago and thought it was a GRAND idea…too bad it is not GA.

Warning: Off topic rant defending my adopted home area of South GA

    steve-o:

Actually, there is plenty to do. I can literally get to anything from mountains (via FDR State Park) to beaches (via FL’s Forgotten Coast) within an hour and a half from my house. Slightly longer trips (up to 4 hrs) put me anywhere from the North GA mountains to Jekyll Island to Mobile AL.

And that’s not even counting the various things to do here in Albany and Valdosta. We have zoos (both at Chehaw Park in Albany and Wild Adventures in Valdosta), amusement parks (the aforementioned Wild Adventures), college football (Valdosta State and Albany State), Arena Football (Albany Wildcats), Minor league baseball (South GA Peanuts in Albany, I think Valdosta has a team as well), an aquarium (Flint Riverquarium) several museums (Albany has a civil rights museum and an arts museum, there is a rural telephone museum about halfway between Cordele and Americus, and Valdosta has a couple), 2 tech colleges in the Albany area alone, plus a two year school and 2 4yr schools (Georgia Southwestern in Americus, Albany State).

In short, we’ve got just about everything Atlanta does, with none of the traffic and a much better quality of life. The hectic pace of life in metro ATL doesn’t affect us down here, and we like it that way.

Politically, Albany/Dougherty County is actually a DEMOCRATIC bastion - think of the demographics and you’ll know why -, though surrounding areas are primarily Republican. I personally am working to establish a more Libertarian presence in the area.

I’ve personally lived the metro ATL life, both OTP and ITP, and I choose South GA over that mess any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming…

hey Get a Grip — I couldn’t give two bits about seeing that Georgia game — it’s another member of my family who is interested. I wouldn’t miss my baby dressed up like a little lamb for anything in the whole world!! We love talking to all our neighbors and meeting all the parents of the kids on the school bus. We are one chatty family and Trick or treating is a great night to be chatty!

Please though feel free to open up a side topic on Halloween TV specials — WE watched It’s A Great Pumpink Charlie Brown yesterday afternoon that we had taped the night before. I’m not a big fan of the Charlie Brown’s — Lucy is sooo mean and says terrrible things that I don’t want the kids repeating. I do like the House of Mouse House of Villains, where the villains (sp) take over the House of Mouse and they show a bunch of old Disney Halloween cartoons. I don’t think my kids are aquite ready for the Disney’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow — I love that one but it is pretty scary. Who else has some favorite Halloween specials?

Jeff, I had to laugh while reading your post. I am the reverse of you. I was raised in south GA and had my bags packed two weeks before high school graduation. I left to go to college in Atlanta and have gone back for only brief visits ever since. I knew my whole life that was not the place I wanted to live and I couldn’t wait to get out. I know enough about it blow holes in a lot of your claims. You start out by saying all the places you can drive to in a an hour or two. They are not places in S.GA just places near S.GA. Big deal. As for the zoos and amusement parks- Cheehaw is a poorly maintained joke and Wild Adventures…yawn. When your bragging about having a Wild Adventures you know there is nothing going on. The colleges down there are two-bit and there for the cheerleaders and plowboys who are too dumb to go anywhere else. Yes, football is king down there but they have nothing else so who can blame them. As far as Democrats vs. Republicans, I beg to differ. Albany has a very large black population and may very well be heavily Democratic but the rest of that Hellhole is solidly Republican. Saxby land through and through. I know enough about it to know you have FAR less than we have in Atlanta. Far less. Maybe if you grew up in Lilburn you might think it is similar but if you live intown and have all the incredible things we have right down the street then you would not be comparing The Flint River Aquarium to the Georgia Aquarium or some podunk telephone musuem to the High Museum or better yet, Albany State football games to the Falcons, Hawks or Braves. And last but not least don’t even try to compare those sad little regional tech schools to Emory, Georgia Tech and GA State. Pathetic. Really.

    steveo:

Most people do eventually want to leave the town where they grew up, that is natural.

Some come back (many I knew up in North GA have since moved back there after going away to various places), many do not. (Interestingly enough, several people from my town in North GA have adopted South GA as their new home, mostly after coming down to VSU for school, but some - like me - who came for other reasons.

But I can also honestly say that I’ve met a lot of good people down here. Yes, there are some hicks, but by and large that group is no more prevalent here than anywhere else I’ve been, and I’ve traveled decently well. (I’m not a globetrotter like JG, but I’ve managed to leave GA frequently enough.)

Besides, it aint exactly the mega-churches in Atlanta working together to produce movies like Facing the Giants and Fireproof. Instead, it is a relatively (compared to some churches in the metro ATL area) small church in the ‘podunk’ areas of South GA that had a vision for helping people.

Anyway, I have no problem with anyone else’s ranting as I sometimes bust out laughing when I read their comments and I always learn something.

The only interesting thing to do on this blog is to get it off subject and start ticking off the idiots who frequent it. Stay on topic? No thanks. This woman spends every football season whining about her drunk husband. So old. Does the AJC actually pay her for this? I can’t wait til she hits middle age and starts having to wear pee pads. I bet she will write about that with great frequency. Meanwhile I guess we will have to enjoy more stories about her overgrown fratboy of a husband. I must say, she does get a lot of professional mileage out of that guy. Bully for her.

Wow! Steve-o! That was downright mean. And I thought I was horrible sometimes. But you are over the top. If you don’t like what Theresa writes about, go read something else. Like Jim Wooten. Maybe he would suit your “tastes” better. But THAT sir, was totally uncalled for. Shame on you.

Wooten is a douchebag. But I do read him sometimes. It reminds me of how important it is to vote. Just like this blog does. I have a right to be critical of her columns. I am a little surprised the AJC has not said something to her about how repetitive she is. I bet this is the 75th column she has written about drunk husband/football gripes or some combination thereof. Jeez! It begs pointing out. If you don’t like my comments then why don’t YOU read something else. Take your own advice.

Oh but reading your “abuse” is ever so much more fun Steve-o. It definitely takes a person of a certain unquestionable “integrity” to take the jabs you took. Don’t worry…we’ve got YOU figured out.

See, MJGoose - and you thought it was only I who sometimes question your musings.

But, day-um, steve-o, take another swig of whatever it is you are drinking, or at least pop another pill - it is too close to Friday to be so worked up over what someone writes on a blog that is meant to get as many responses as possible- whether on target or not! Our rants only add credence to her boss that she, and her blog, are relevant. When you continue to rant you only add to the perception that what she says is important to the AJC and its circulation, not life in general!

The holiday is officially recognized within the state on the last Friday of the month. Evidently this has been the law since 2000, at least from what I saw on http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/us/nevada-day#obs

    Grammar Police,

Is it grammar or grammer? I am wondering because you spelled it both ways while scolding Theresa.

I can’t find “grammer” in my copy of Webster’s but MSWord isn’t flagging “grammer” as being incorrectly spelled.

They have been raised to work hard and support themselves. Not look to the government for handouts or expect someone else to take care of them.

WHOO HOO SUGAR….YOU ARE CORRECT…DO YOU WANT A STARBURST OR A HERSHEYS KISS?

    Hahaha!

do I get to use both names on the blog?

Jeff, I may be incorrect here, after looking at your link ( did you cheat and look it up?) but I was told NEVADA DAY was celebrated on November 1 and I was told this before 2000, so YOU may be right and I may be wrong now. Thanks for the link.

Lakerat…I love musings and when I read them in this column it makes things interesting.

Theresa’s column is full of little tidbits that she is able to turn into a paycheck….you go girl!

There are few of us who can talk about whatever we want each day and get paid to do so. I am thrilled that I get to…even though if not on this column.

For those of you who continue to complain about the day’s topic, let us know where to find your blog and we will see if we like what you have to say!

So if I watch the Ga/Fl game and not go with my kids trick or treating then I am a bad parent. Wow, it sounds like none of you are parents that believe that crap. Yep I Am going to watch the Ga/Fl game and if MY children would rather go trick or treating then sobeit. Mom is not a football fan so she can go with them. You that think a parents entainment is selfish then never call the babysitter and never go out for dinner. This is so idiotic, I am idiotic to even be here, AJC had ruined my idea of news.

MommaJane - Nevada Day is actually October 31st, but, like Jeff said, was changed to the last Friday of October in 2000, by vote.

As a kid, I loved that we got Halloween off - my dad always made it special by spending the day decorating the house and getting things ready for a spooky night - and we often got to take the next day off, depending on what part of the week Halloween fell on.

Georgia is overrated, as usual. You will miss nothing if you don’t watch the game. In case you haven’t heard, there is something called TiVo. Record the game, go spend time with your kids, and then watch the game when you get home. Problem solved.

I missed last year because my son was born the week of the game, so those tickets were scalped. I am missing this year to take my daughter trick or treating. I can’t complain, I made enough off of the tickets this year to pay for half of our season tickets next year. Go Dawgs!!!

Doesn’t Georgia Tech play Florida State this weekend in Atlanta? Isn’t this the Atlanta newspaper? I understand covering the GA/FL game, but I haven’t seen a thing mentioned about the GT/FSU game, and this newspapers’s headquarters are a mile or two from GT’s campus. What’s going on?
