Where are the best places to get kids’ haircuts?
Nominate your favorite place to get your child’s haircut for the Best of the Big A, and also share with us your worst haircutting experiences.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The Best of the Big A is searching for the best places to get children’s haircuts in Atlanta.
For people without kids this may not sound like an important category, but parents know this information is pure GOLD!
The only thing worse than a growing out a crappy haircut on a child is enduring 30 minutes of someone who doesn’t know how to cut children’s hair working on your child.
It took us a very long time to find a good children’s haircutter in Gwinnett. I took them to one so-called children’s salon where they had the TV and cute chairs to keep the children entertained. The stylists were patient and had the right equipment to safely cut around ears without cutting the kids. However, they gave terrible haircuts. One time I had to take them both into my stylist to get their hair fixed afterwards they were so poorly cut.
I have found a new place, but I will only go to one stylist in there. I don’t want to reveal her name because she’s already hard to get, and I don’t need more people in line.
One of the ladies that works at the new place was the one that did the super bad cut at the other salon. I think she is a very nice lady, but I absolutely refuse to let her cut my children’s hair again. It gets downright embarrassing. She’ll be available, but I will continue to sit until the other stylist can take the kids — sometimes 30 minutes to an hour longer. It’s so insulting to the lady but I’m not going to pay a second stylist to fix her mistakes.
Where do you love to take your kids to get their haircuts? What’s the worst haircut they’ve ever gotten or their worst experience getting a cut?

He goes to the same barbershop that I do. I basically have them run a #4 clipper all over my head, and he’s decided he likes that look too. Hard to screw that one up.

With three kids, I would learn to do it myself. How hard can it be?

Salon Red Kids in Decatur is definitely worth it. Lisa is the best kids haircutter. Haircuts are the only splurg we do on our kids and they get so many compliments.

for boys:
buzz cuts are REALLY easy to do at home, the clippers needed are generally inexpensive (somewhere in the $20-$50 range), the length can be adjusted via the several attachments most come with, and the overall cut is typically in style all the time.
For girls, you’re talking to the wrong dude! :P

For our daughter’s first haircut, I took her to the stylist I’ve been going to for years (so it was NOT a kiddie place) Our girl’s hair was growing in mullet-style, so I wanted the back trimmed up cute so it was the same length has her sheepdog bangs and sides. (I’m not cutting her bangs, just doing clips and ponytails)
Anyway, my stylist did a great job on her. Especially since everytime she combed her hair to cut it, baby girl would turn toward her to see what was going on!
I’m not sure what she will charge me to continue to bring her up there for her haircuts, but her first one was free. And we even saved her mullet, all tied up with ribbon! ;)
Sorry, but I don’t want to share the salon name or stylist, because she’s already so busy…plus I don’t like to give hints as to where we live!

Obama for President … Relax, for goodness sake. I assure you we’re all capable of being engaged in both current economic/political affairs AND our childrens grooming.
I, for one, spent Saturday at the Sweet Auburn Festival registering voters and am headed to my third Obama fundraiser in the past 10 days tonight.
Last night, I was in a board meeting for my HOA. Tomorrow morning I am attending the Dekalb County Commissioners meeting, and then delivering meals to refugee families. In the afternoon, I have a careplan meeting for my mother-in-law at her new nursing home.
Oh, and I work full time.
There are 24 hours in a day, and most of us are Moms, afterall. We’re really good at balancing things. A two second chat about your favorite children’s hairstylist really isn’t any big deal.

Theresa:)…
I used to take my kids to Snip-Its, but almost every time I’d get home and see how uneven their cuts were. On 2 different occasions, I went back the next day for them to RE-CUT my daughters hair! Several of my friends have had the same comments on this kid salon- and we all saw different stylists.
Now, I take them to my salon, and it is cheaper ( No tv’s and cute chairs, but they do get a lollipop!), and they get a great cut!

We’ve been taking my grandson to Lucky’s in Austell for about 3-4 years now..My granddaughter’s hair doesn’t grow near as fast as his, so she’s only had a one “real” haircut & a few trims..I took her to Regis in Arbor Mall…

Wow DecaturMom you are amazing. I should relax just like you say. Because I am so not relaxed. I just need to quit reading ridiculous “mommy” blogs is what I need to do. I have kids too but no time for this “mommy mess”. Got REAL stuff to handle and consider. Not the “stylist” for my children’s hair….silly…silly…silly. Wait…can “Dunwoody Mom” chime in next?
By here we go again

Obamaforpresident I take my kids to the most expensive place I can find. The more you spend, the better you look.
I don’t mind paying $50 to get my kids hair cut. I spend well over $100 on my own hair, once a month.
What’s wrong with that? We have enough money and I’ll decide where to spend it. If shelling out a mere $50 to look good, why not??
My kids and I must look good whenever we leave the house. I have a reputation to uphold for heaven’s sake. The neighbors have to keep up with ME!

We take my son to the same place my husband goes. They work 7 days/week, and most of the stylists do a good job. They get a little backed up on the weekends sometimes, but they generally do a good job. Besides, my son loves to flirt with all the ladies there!

Who knew that a blog about kids’ haircuts would get the trolls out in force so early!
Anyway… Although I haven’t used my license in years (& because of that, I’ve let it lapse,) I used to be a hair stylist in my pre-kid days. So I’ve been the only one to cut my kids’ hair. It’s great to not have to drive anywhere or set an appointment to wait to see anyone. And if I miss some hairs over the ears or one side of the bangs is longer than the other, it’s easy to fix.
Since I have been on the opposite side of the chair with cutting kids’ hair too, I could tell some awful stories of parents bringing in their kids to have their hair done.
The salon I worked in was geared for more upscale clientele (not snooty but not like Great Clips either.) The parents knew this and most of the kids were great that I dealt with, I still remember several that were amazing kids. But there was one in particular that was a monster. I seriously would have taken drugs before his appointment if I’d had them. His mother would bring him in, sit him in the booster seat, and stay right by his side the whole time. Being a parent now, I know it’s tough sometimes to be out of your child’s sight when they’re doing something they don’t want to. But he would start complaining and she would beg, plead, scold, bribe with candy… trying to get him to let me finish. I cut myself countless times with him because he kept jerking himself in the chair and one time he kept screaming at the top of his lungs and I swear he messed his pants. The only time he didn’t act up was when his dad brought him. His dad put him in the chair the same way his mom had & then sat across the room reading a magazine. The boy started to fuss & the dad just let him know that wasn’t going to be in his best interest. The kid was quiet the rest of the time. But I was not upset at all when they stopped bringing him.

CP:
You touch on a subject that recently got brought up on the spanking thread:
When Dad is present, kids KNOW not to get out of line.
When just Mom is around, it is more hit or miss with the discipline.
To all the single moms out there: Sorry, but I call it like I see it, and the above has come from quite a few years watching kids in a variety of situations.

MA ….just home now and loved the FLOWBEE idea. My Dad has one of these and keeps asking who he should leave it to in his will. LOL.
I really have nothing else juicy to add to this topic, except that it was very sad when I took my baby ( who is 21 now) to have all of his curls trimmed off and have a big boy cut at about 18 months. My hairdresser did the honors.
WATCH out parents for those with children who cut their own hair…such as my daughter at 3. We were having carpeting installed and I told her that she had to stay in her room as the installers did not speak English and I was afraid she would touch something sharp. She was good as gold and when I checked on her… her Barbies and her hair was all over the bedroom floor. She got a scissors from her 8 year old brother…I literally screamed and cried. It was a mess but did eventually grow out! A fond memory!

Hey Jeff. I would have to agree that when both parents are around it’s usually the dad that has the area of discipline. Sometimes it’s the mom (as in my case.) I was raised quite strictly - my dad being the one to discipline. It was a “wait ‘til your dad gets home” kinda household. But I’m the one now that keeps the kids in line. My viewpoint is that I’m the one they are around more often (as I’m a SAHM) & with the 4 of them, I need them to listen the 1st time.
And I think all kids have or personally know someone with a story like motherjanegoose’s, kids cutting their own hair. My oldest daughter did that when she was with her father for the weekend. I had to be the one to cut her hair extrememly short, but then it grew out. When I was little, my brother & I rolled silly putty underneath the bed. I missed when it was rolled my way & went right up in my waist-length hair. It was soon afterwards my jaw-length hair. My mother was not happy. :)

I love going to Hairbenders.net at Old Peachtree @ Satellite Rd. in Suwanee. When my daughter was 5 she decided to “trim” her hair and gave herself a mullet! I had been to this salon once before and called in a panic. They took us right in and gave my daughter the most stylish, short haircut. It’s an adult salon but we both still go there. Been two years now!

I take my 3 year old to my hairdresser, Pam at Horizon Hair Studio in Suwanee. Pam gave her the CUTEST little stacked bob with bangs. Pam is fabulous with adults too!
newmom….. you are so lucky to be able to do clips and ponytails! Little E refuses to wear any cute hairbows so we have to keep some little bangs cut on her.

Hi Kathy—I won’t say that she always wears her clips and ponytails, but I try.
She usually finds the clips and pulls them right out, but the little tiny ponytail holders seem to stay in longer. Her hair just looks so funny after she pulls out the ponytail—my husband says it looks like flock of seagulls… But I keep trying, I figure someday she’ll get used to them. Don’t they? Eventually? who knows…

My older son screams the entire time he gets a hair cut. I take my boys to Halfpint Haircuts in Johns Creek. They are wonderful, the haircut is exactly what I asked for and not one of them have ever lost their cool with him. I have been to two other kid haircut chains and they would get an attitude with me and did not do a good job on the hair cut. I highly recommend Halfpints!

We used to see Jemma at Salon Red Kids in Decatur, but she moved on to adults and after a couple of bad experiences with long waits and bad haircuts, we switched to Snip Its in Norcross. He always gets a good cut, but it seems pricey for the 5 minutes it takes.

I recently was shocked to find out my 12-yr-old is now charged an adult price at Fantastic Sams. I’ll probably take him back to SportsClips since they have coupons and frequent customer discounts.
I’ve never been willing to spend a lot on their hair because it grows out and their kids. Who really cares what their hair looks like? It’ll grow out eventually. When they are teens, we can start worrying about what it looks like.
I cut my 4-yr-old’s hair myself. His is pretty curly so I just grab and snip and figure it’s layered and curly, it doesn’t matter if it’s perfect.
