Are you in the mood for back-to-school clothes shopping?
Ninety-degree temps ruin my fall shopping spirit.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I have to say I am just not in the mood for back-to-school clothes shopping. It is far too hot outside to be thinking about jeans, sweaters and turtlenecks. However, it’s a Catch 22 because if you wait too long then the stores are completely picked over.
I waited until June to choose sandals for my kids. Oh my goodness, what could I have been thinking trying to buy sandals in June! The Stride Rite store near us was completely out of sizes and styles. I believe the salesgirl said to me, “Well you’re really supposed to buy your sandals in March and your fall shoes in July?” Is she kidding? I’m sure shoe companies would love kids growing out of their shoes before it was even the season to wear them (so then their parents would have to buy more shoes)!
It seems like online stores have fall shoes into the winter where maybe I could order when I wanted to. Has anyone tried to order fall shoes in September or October from Lands End or other catalogs? Are they picked over too?
What about your kids’ clothes? Do you buy them now or wait until it’s closer to actually being chilly? Where do you like to buy from — in stores, catalogs or online? Where do you find the most selection later in the season?

That is one thing that just gripes my butt.
All the pretty summer clothes have been replaced with frumpy browns. Everything at Macy’s was brown this past weekend. ICK.
Anyway, we shop the clearance racks. And I don’t purchase all her winter clothes at the beginning of school. The kids are still wearing shorts to school. So we just purchase a few pair of jeans, a couple tops, some decent shoes, and that’s it. Then in September we start to buy the fall/winter clothes.
I hate that they put this stuff in the stores in August, the hottest time of the year. I don’t know one single person who actually shops for winter clothes in August. I can’t even stand to walk past the sweaters, I start to sweat….

Yes, Land’s End shoes and clothes get picked over early too. Maybe not as bad. I like to look at clothes in person. I have found that when I am looking for ski clothes and apres ski boots, I have to order early or else it is picked over.

Nurse don’t fall into this guy’s or gals wishes. Being a SAHM is an awesome gift and privilge. Being Mom (working or sah) is a great gift. Just ignore the troll and he will disapear. (had the same conversation with my 5 year old yesterday) On topic, I am having a Kelly’s Kids (a kids home show clothing party) today. Not really excited about it because I love summer clothes!!!! But stil want E and B to look good in the fall and winter. I did do a Gap run for pants for E but I never over stress buying fall clothes too early except Kelly’s kids. online you can find what ever you want.

lakerat, just go away.
I am not giving in and buying fall/winter clothes. I did that before and my kids outgrew them before it was cold enough to wear them!
They are still wearing their summer clothes and will for at least another month. I will shop for winter sometime in september at the earliest. Probably more like October, when it is cooling off enough.
Yeah, I hate it that it’s picked over, but I have spent enough money already and I still have paid for the PTA fees, lunch accounts, and various saundry items that the school hits you with at the beginning of the year. Ugh. Thank God for my part-time job. And take that lakerat. Part time DOES count.

I am a single mom and there is no way I can go out and buy fall stuff right now. Seh does not grow as fast a she was but still I have to wait. Luckily she has not expressed a great desire to have designer items. We do a lot of Marshalls TJ Maxx and Target. I do not buy pricey shoes since the year she grew 3 whole sizes in 6 monthes. Plus she is so hard on shoes the just get replaced in three months.
Really there is no need to shop for fall right now it will be too hot to wear the stuff until October. It will just drive the younger kids nuts not to be able to wear their new clothes.

Good morning all!
Baby is down for her morning nap, so I thought I’d do the lame thing and check in with all the other losers and spout a bit of dribble. ;)
Obviously we aren’t ‘back to school’ shopping yet, but we did pick up a few fall items for baby girl over the tax-free weekend at Carters. We combined a coupon and savings card, and spent $30 for $50 worth of clothes.
We’ll probably get a few more items here and there on sale/clearance, but I also know how quickly it can turn cold, and I wanted to have at least some things with sleeves for her!
Kind of a side note: We NEVER cut the tags off of anything until we know it’s about to be worn. I have ended up returning clothes, or swapping out for the next size up, and that is so much easier with the tags intact! I got that advice when I was pregnant—to both keep tags on, and also save every receipt. It’s hard when you want to wash up everything and get it ready for baby, but that method has helped a lot! Plus, if you ever decide to sell on ebay, having those tags attached will be a plus! :D
A second side note: When I worked full-time, I certainly did not waste my employers’ time or money by reading the internet, let alone posting on a blog! It’s called a work ethic…

I buy all shirts online. But pants and shoes need to be tried on. We just got back from doing a little yesterday. We were on vacation for the tax free holiday….and I am so happy about that! Shopping for 3 children is insanity enough…saving a mere 6% just isn’t worth it!
Like some of you, I do not buy fall/winter stuff right now. I mean, we live in Georgia. Our summer lasts until Oct 15th!! But if you must….try Overstock first. They have some unique things ans great prices. Also, their shipping is fabulous!

Nope. I rarely buy many clothes at this point. With the weather so warm, they have summer things. Seems foolish to spend a lot of money on more summer things that will only get used a couple of months. By next spring, they will have grown out of them.

Has anyone tried to order fall shoes in September or October from Lands End or other catalogs?
Are parents really shelling out high end for kids’ shoes/fashion? Rack Room, Shoe Carnival, and Famous Footwear all has Buy 1 get 1 50% off last week. I had coupons for the first 2 so we got 4 pairs of shoes for $100 — 1 dress, 1 athletic for each child, and they wer brand names!
I picked up one pair of jeans for the kids at Old Navy—impulse buy while getting my own jeans. Otherwise, I bought a few things to ‘update’ the summer clothes (as JJ said its too hot for real fall fashion) and began to fill in larger sizes for late Sept/Oct at Target. I used to do Macy’s and the other higher end places, then one of my friends let me know her secret of how she keeps her ‘wealth’—did you ever notice truly wealthy people do not go out spending tons of dough, they just look for bargins—-even if the bargin is a $500 pair of shoes down from $1000?—-Anyway, now my kids look good, and my wallets do too.
My real reasoning: kids tend to be rough on clothes, their idea of ‘fashion’ changes on a dime, and they out grow clothes to dang fast!
Yes, you have to shop on the retail schedule (3-6 months) if you want to make sure you get sizes etc. I started 4th of July weekend doing my B2S shopping. I will be working on ‘Christmas’ Labor Day weekend!

Ahhh…The joys of having a son. My 7 year old loves jogging pants (the kind that basketball players wear over their shorts), jeans & cargo pants. I buy everything off of the clearance rack (even for me) so I bought his fall clothing and a new coat at the beginning of summer. My biggest problem is my kid’s long legs and feet. The track pants are long enough that I don’t really worry about them but he can never wear his jeans nor cargo pants more than a couple months before they are too short. Shoes are the one thing that I can’t really buy in advance because his feet might grow two size while he’s at school today! I did buy his school sneakers at the beginning of summer only because Rack Room had BOGO 1/2 price so I bought them a 1/2 size larger than his summer sneakers. Luckily, they fit today but no bets on tomorrow! LOL

Victoria Secrets had their hoodies on sale for $25. So I had my daughter pick one out for herself, and one for her older cousin.
I now have a total of 6 Christmas presents for various family members. WOO HOO….I will not go broke this year.

If anyone else has a baby or toddler, you may already know about Pedipeds. They are the best shoes ever! We bought a pair for baby girl, and they are the only shoes she will allow to stay on her feet longer than 30 seconds, plus they are really good for their feet too. www.pediped.com
Now, if anyone knows how to get them cheaper/on sale, I’m all ears! I have tried to bid on “gently used” pairs on ebay, but I always get outbid. And I just refuse to pay more than half price, including shipping, for used shoes. So now I am thinking I’ll just suck it up and buy them new, full-price, and sell them myself when she outgrows them! :)
JJ—thanks for the new name (I think!) How does it look on me? And does this mean I’m in the running for an award tomorrow?

Oh honey….if it ain’t on sale, I do not open the check book! Our kids have tons of fun shopping because its a game to them to find super deals on the things they really want and/or need. The Boy could care less….but he is only 5. But he’ll learn. We have been shopping Craigs List for more expensive Christmas/Hannukah/birthday gifts. Unfortunately for the sellers…who are in obvious financial straits…there are fantastic deals to be had on jewelry and the like. So we have purchased some very high end things for the moms in our lives!

I do not buy back-to-school clothes, its still summer and he (13-rising eighth grader) will just keep wearing what he has. We did have to buy some shoes but I would have had to no matter school or not. When it does start to cool down, we will see if new jeans are needed, probably this fall as he grew quite a bit, but I only get two pairs unless its a really good deal. He doesn’t have to have clean ones every day unless he really made a mess of them, and there is always the washer. He does know how to use it. When my daughter was still in high school, we handled it the same way; it just does not make sense to buy now and expect everything to fit and or be “right” in two months.

Lame is crackin me up! How funny to say that part time doesn’t count! Oh well, I won’t argue with anyone today. It’s funny that if I didn’t work part time, we would not be eating much for dinner, nor would the kids have any clothes to wear or be able to go to the doctor. My husband sure thinks my part time counts!
As far as my mentioning ski clothes and boots, it absolutely partains to the topic at hand. Theresa mentioned Land’s End. She wanted to know if online companies sell out quickly as well. Lame must go back and get his GED first. Obviously someone can’t read.
Our family is very frugal. We watch our money well. We do have some luxuries in our life, but we are bargain shoppers! Our house is very simple. My husband built it actually. No frills by any means. We do splurge on some things like a yearly ski trip. We were watching our money this year and did not go.
Lame still didn’t answer the question. If we’re lame, why are you still here??
JJ- the boy seems better. The steriods are kicking in. The girl whoever came home from swimming yesterday and is running a few, complains of headache and stomach ache and chills. Her throat looks a little red too. Her doctor called her in something. Hopefully the boy won’t catch it. We shall see. You get one kid better and the other one gets sick. I feel like all I have done the last week is push in meds and fluids. I think I am ready to go back to work this afternoon! LOL. I joked with my husband that I couldn’t wait to go back. I told him “Don’t call me at work with any problems”. We both chuckled.
NewLameMom I love it!!!

I buy clothes year-round. It’s always at the store so I can actually see the item. Usually it’s either Target, Walmart, or thrift stores. Since they’re still pretty young, I’ve not had any issues with the “gotta have” this or that namebrand. They keep growing so fast that I’m getting new outfits every couple months or so. And don’t get me started on the shoes. Luckily my 2 oldest daughters are only about 1 size apart in pants & shoes so whenever the older one grows out of something, the younger one gets it.
My mother loves her “grandma” role & can’t stop buying clothes for all the kids so they pretty much always have something new.
Whenever I do buy anything for the kids (or myself) it’s got to be on sale or clearance. I just can’t bring myself to spend a lot of money on things they’re growing out of in a few months.
When they get older I’ll probably do more shopping around BTS sales times but it just isn’t worth it for now.
I’m looking forward to Monday when we start back to school. Orientation for the oldest 2 was this morning & the kids had a great time meeting their teachers & seeing the classrooms. Which brings me to a side note: Why did they schedule it so early in the morning? It was from 8 - 12. Luckily (or lamely) I’m a SAHM for now, but I don’t know how a lot of parents, especially single parents, do the scheduling to get time off work to go to these things.
Well, off to make lunch for the kiddies & get ready for the Kindergarten picnic her school is hosting this afternoon. Then another orientation tomorrow for the Pre-K. Hope everyone has a wonderful day.

I am done paying PTA dues (I’ve paid every year since K), and there is no need to walk around the high school with a senior. If she doesn’t know her way around a school shes been going to for 3 years now, that’s her problem. I’m very angry at her right now, so I will not say another word…..

I’m waiting for the big Kidsignments sale at the Gwinnett Fairgrounds starting Aug 19th. I always try to sell at the event so I can go to seller’s night.
I tend to pay under $3/item on average for my kids clothes. Most of the time I try to keep it around for $1-2 for shirts and $2-4 for pants/skirts. I can outfit my 2 older kids (8 and 12) for about $130-150 total. We use hand-me-downs for the youngest but I usually try to purchase him at least one or two ‘new to us’ items at the sale.
I can’t imagine trying to dress my 3 kids without the consignment sales.

Theresa, have you tried the stride rite outlet at Discover Mills? They have all older styles/’out of season’ shoes. I tend to use Payless/Target for my older two’s shoes but my youngest has really wide feet so need the selection of widths at Stride rite. I can’t handle paying $40 for a pair of kids shoes though so, when I found out about the outlet, I started shopping there.

N&M -
Thanks for the suggestion regarding the GED - that may be something for me to consider.
While I am at it, I may also take courses regarding reading comprehension, too. In the meantime, hopefully you can assist me in understanding what is wrong with the following excerpt taken from a writer above in response to the original topic of “back to school shopping” and “buying Fall shoes in Sept or Oct” (could these be considered back to school shoes, too?) from Lands End; the writer wrote “I like to look at clothes IN PERSON (emphasis added). I have found that when I am looking for ski clothes and apres ski boots, I have to order early or else it is picked over.” So, if the writer likes to look at clothes IN PERSON, why would she have to ORDER early to get what she sees in the catalogue? Oh, I forgot, Colorado and Wyoming sometimes get snow in late October, so ski clothes and apres ski boots could be germane to the original question - my bad! Yet, it still does not answer the IN PERSON question regarding the purchase of ski clothes; I guess SKI CLOTHES are not considered clothes since they are ordered from a catalogue. Yes, I think I have it now.
Thanks for your guidance - I am now a better person for having thought through these questions. And, I guess it does beat trying to figure out why anyone cares about whizzin’ in the ocean!

I have bargain shopping down to a science. It helps that my four kids are all girls and close in age. Most things for the younger ones are hand me downs, but for the older ones I buy Old Navy clearance, Target clearance and Lands End clearance on line. They are all elementary age, so no “gotta haves” yet in regards to brands. I am willing to pay a higher price for shoes, but they only have 3 pair each, so the shoes have to be quality. Now when they start to want things like Abercrombie, then I will be scared!

CP - I think he’s better, thanks. We all slept through the night, in any case, which was a huge relief. My stomach is now making noises, but I’m a big boy who will (probably) be able to get better all by himself.
Nurse - Good news on your son. I’m glad it’s improving - even a small step forward can feel huge.
On topic, I don’t even shop for my own clothes, much less his. In the marital division of duties, the spouse took that one - she doesn’t mind doing it and I’d rather gnaw my own left leg off. However, from watching her tactics, I’ll second the consignment sale thing - and do sign up as a seller. You’d be amazed at the prime stuff that gets snapped up in the pre-sale before the public’s allowed in. Just make sure you fumigate and sterilize it before it gets worn. Of course, that option goes out the window when they get too cool to wear anything second-hand. I figure this is the last year it’ll work with ours.

Well, we went back to school 7/28. My daughter has to wear uniforms, and this year I’ve changed my shopping habits. She got some skorts and short sleeve shirts, and can still wear her shorts from the last school year(we are on a year round calendar, so that was only 8 weeks ago). For those who are doing Christmas shopping so early —- how do you know what to get? Do you just buy what you THINK they will want? Or buy what YOU want them to have? In our family, we make lists. So everyone on the list gets something they asked for.
Unique idea, no? I have friends whose relatives shop year-round for Christmas and they end up with the most god-awful crap that they have no use for.
But for the shopper - SHE is done by Labor Day.

Karen We do lists too, and I have a small family. YEA!!
However, they make comments year round as to things they would like, and I jot ideas down all year long. I know my oldest niece likes Victoria Secrets hoodies, so when they are on sale, my daugther picks on out for her.
Just the other day I was on the phone with my mom and she was telling me about this show she watched that listed the 10 Top Tearjerker movies, and she was saying how she loved some of them and named a few. So I wrote them on my list.
Also, I have a notebook feature on my cell, and I store notes and such in there. When I’m shopping, I can look on my phone for lists….

There is currently a warrant for his arrest, a bench warrant issued by the Judge himself (Bench warrant) that never expires. So if I can find him, and provide an address to the Sheriff, they will go get him. I have to go dig up my divorce papers tonight to get the case number. I also have relatives in law enforcement who can help.
However, I doubt he has any money, since he has left a trail of 5 kids (an 4 single moms) in his wake. Jail time sounds real good to me!!! I’ve struggled for 17 years, it’s his turn. That money would be real nice for my daughter’s college fund.
And in case anyone is wondering, NO I am not bitter. Just broke. ha ha..

JJ, wow..I hope that he didn’t do all of this just to keep from paying child support..I would hate to have to tell my chihld this about her father..Thank goodness that she has a mother that from what I’ve read before has done a great job of taking care of her..I actually don’t have children. I do however have custody of my 2 nieces & I get my nephews twins every weekend & my husband spends just as much money & time with all of them as he did with his 2 that are now grown…My hat’s off to all single Mom’s & Dad’s..

Lovinlife—thanks for the advice on used baby shoes. I was kinda grossed out at first at the idea of her wearing other kids’ shoes, but I only bid on them if you could not see any foot/toe imprints (and I would have had her wear socks with them too!) It’s for the best that I didn’t win any, cause it still makes me feel funny. I’m that way about used clothes too. We ventured out to that kidsignment place last spring, and were completely turned off. Granted, we went the last day, but there were only a few items that actually looked nice enough to pay the $2 for, then, to look at the line of 100 people to wait for a $2 item? We left and went straight to Carters.
I’m sure it would be different if we had more than one child, but for now, we’ll stick to the sale and clearance racks. And new pedipeds! :D
And after reading what some of you sweet ladies go through with men, I really feel for you. I wish there was something I could do for you…. I am so thankful that I have a good one, I know they are hard to find!! ;)

We’re not really “back to school” yet -well, preschool -but as far as younger children go I highly recommend checking out either Tanger Outlets in Locust Grove or the GA 400 outlets in Dawsonville in September. I got on the OshKosh and Carter’s email lists, so I get great coupons and LOADS of clothes for next to nothing. All of the kids stores at these outlet centers have always been well-stocked through September when I’ve been there. NO -I cannot stand the thought of purchasing hot winter clothing right now for any of us! Plus, when they’re toddlers -who knows when the next growth spurt is coming? In September I’m at least able to start thinking of fall as a reality. My only exception -if you get on Old Navy’s email list, they often have BLOWOUT sales for the upcoming season a month or two before you would really need the clothes. I have ordered lots through them (shipping is $5 flat), and you get a much better selection online. I’m talking $5 shirts, $8 hoodies, $10 jeans, etc.

JJ,
My daughter goes to Imagine Academy of Smyrna, it’s a charter school in it’s second year. We are out a week in Oct, 3 weeks in Dec, 2 for spring break, and 6 weeks for summer. Our year starts 7/28 and goes thru 6/12, the school year is 188 days, verses Cobb’s 180. I have to say, I don’t mind the calendar, and with uniforms, school shopping isn’t that bad(we have around a 97% complaince rate with the uniforms, which is about the same as the local private schools in the area).

JJ,
Sounds like your child’s father could be related to my daughter’s father…..5 kids by 5 different single women….I met my husband when my daughter was 1, we got married when she was 3, he adopted her when she was 5, she’s now 10 going on 16. It was the best thing that ever happen to her and myself….no more baby mama drama!

Lame We are eagerly awaiting today’s award ceremony.
I am currently in hair and make up, and will be getting into my gown shortly. I understand the red carpet has been rolled out, and traffic is starting to get pretty thick out in front of the Auditorium.
When do you think we will get started?

Lame, none of these women are saying that it’s all the mens fault..BUT I don’t care whos fault it is that a couple divorced, if there are children involved & the “Dad” doesn’t pay child support or see their child, then yes IMO, this makes the “Dad” a scumbag at it’s finest..I would never have anything to do with a man that doesn’t (or won’t) pay child support..

Becky May I inquire as to how long you have had custody of your nieces? Or am I being too personal?
I commend you for raising them. I know that if anything happened to my brother or his ex, I would gladly take in my nieces…….and I know my brother would take my kid if he had too.

JJ,I’ve had custody of them since Dec.One is 14, one is 16..Like you said, there wasn’t a question of me taking them..They are my family..I have custody for 2 years.. Their mother was young when she had them & their father was killed in a car wreck when the baby was only 9 months old..So Mom got involved in drugs & is now (thank goodness) drug free..She can get them back, with the judges ok..They are ok with going back to her, but know that they will always have a home with me..Any of my nieces & nephews know that they are always welcome at my house..

Morning ladies! Yes lovin life, that was most certainly not me who posted earlier today. I’m rarely online that early anyway—I only get online when baby is napping! And I’d hope y’all would know I wouldn’t type or even think that…
I had better go wash the ‘baby’ off of me and get ready for the big event! I doubt spit-up laden pjs and bedhead are appropriate for such a ceremony…

Awww, see? Isn’t it nice to kiss and make up?
I’d love the blonde extensions, JJ, will you please pass them over? I just finished drying my short brown hair. I think they will look FABULOUS!!
I just hope the ceremony is during the afternoon nap, I don’t want to miss it! I also don’t want to try to carry baby around in these 5 inch heels…ouch!
Did we ever set some perameters on what qualifies for an award? I was thinking of going back to the beginning on the week and find my favorite posts—both funny and serious. Is that what the other judges out there are doing? :)

LovinLife I’m sorry if I’ve ever been rude to you. It was not meant to be that way. Sometimes I come off a but ruder than I think……please accept my apologies….
NewMom 5 inch heels? Oh my…I’m wearing ballerina shoes. I haven’t worn a pair of heels in YEARS. But I tell ya, these pantyhose are killing me. But my gown is georgeous. Did I tell you Oscar himself designed it? He heard about the ceremony and called me. I feel like a princess all dressed up, hair and makeup.
It looks as though our presenter is stuck in traffic. You would think someone of their calibre would be able to prioritize their time. Oh the wait, the stress, etc.
Has everyone practiced their acceptance speeches?

JJ—you mean we’re letting someone else do the presenting? I was kinda hoping we could have a “regulars’ choice awards” ceremony.
But that’s OK, I hope that he/she is worth the wait. But I have to say, to be late to such an event is kinda….lame, ya know? ;)
So lucky to have Oscar dressing you!! I am project runway-ing it here, just taking a bit from here and there in my closet. I’m thinking it will be GWTW ‘I saw it in the window and just had to have it’ meets Molly Ringwald’s monstrosity in pretty in pink. I will be FAB-U-LOUS!
What are all you other ladies wearing?? Do tell, it would be SO embarrassing to show up in the same ‘garment’!!

And don’t ‘not’ get dressed up, wouldn’t you hate to be surprised with an award while wearing a mu-mu and your hair in rollers? (cause you know, that’s how we all dress…at least us sahm losers) Come on, dig out an old prom dress, something! :D

Alright Becky, I’ll let you off the hook with your shorts, but MENTALLY I think you should wear that dress that Halle Berry wore a few years ago—remember, kinda sheer? That would be FAB-U-LOUS!

STOP THE PRESSES, STOP THE PRESSES.
I just received a phone call from Lame and he is unable to make the ceremony. He was in a wreck in the limo out in traffic (no one was hurt, but the driver got hauled off for DUI, and the awards statues got all smashed up). He asked if I could take over, but unfortunately I am just too swamped to handle the responsibility.
Anyone? Any lame SAHM’s up for the job? OR we will just have to wait until next Friday.
I sure hope we can get the deposit on the auditorium back. The caterers are a little upset, but they can put everything back into the fridge for next week. WHEW…

Oh no!
I would definitely volunteer, BUT the clock is ticking on when baby will wake from her nap. I was actually expecting her to wake by now! And although some think we sahms all just sit around all day, it’s only during naptime for me! :D
Anyone else? I might be able to join back in later this afternoon, once she (hopefully) takes a little afternoon nap. Sorry!!

For the person inquiring about Pedipeds. I buy the “Target” style of those shoes (if I’m thinking of the right leather-bottomed shoes). They are in the infants aisle - hanging up in little packages with VERY cute designs for boys and girls.
