Did you save your pregnancy test stick?

Mothers across the country are storing away urine-soaked mementos.

A recent New York Times story describes the phenomenon of women saving their positive pregnancy test sticks as a memento of this life-changing event. Here’s the story.

The article explains how it is unique to this generation because home testing is so widely used now. Our mothers had to go to the doctor’s office for their pregnancy tests.

I personally have every single one of my positive sticks — even when I retested out of disbelief. They are stuck in a little drawer underneath my vanity skirt. I can tell which one belongs to which baby by the brand. (I guess writing on it with a Sharpie would be easier.)

I kept mine because we did struggle to get pregnant. By the time it finally happened, I was so happy and incredulous that I wanted to keep the proof that I was really pregnant. It was a big deal to finally make that darn stick turn a color.

Have you kept all your positive pregnancy test sticks? Why did you keep them and where did you store them? Does your husband know you saved them?

Okay, one word…..ewwwwwwwwwwwww!! Okay, two words…………YUCK!!!!!!!!

Is this the best we could do for topics today? Come on now!!!!

No, I didn’t save the stick, hell I’ve got the child (now 14) to remember the occasion by! OMG!!!!!

I’m sure there will only be a spoonful of posts today!

I considered keeping my pregnancy test stick, but then I started thinking about the fact that I peed on it and was a little grossed out at the thought of keeping old urine. I tossed it. Perhaps I should’ve photographed it. That way I could have had a momento without saving pee.

And YES, I love my child dearly (even thru these crazy teen years), wouldn’t trade her for the world. But I see no need in saving a germy stick that I peed on. Can you say mega germs?!!!!

I did not keep my pregnancy tests. It’s gross… you peed on it! Yucky. A photograph of the used sticks would be a more hygenic way for you to keep the memory, rather than filling up a drawer in your bathroom. Of course, the child you gave birth to is the ultimate reminder / souvenir of that positive pregnancy test!

It never crossed my mind to save the test when I found out my son (now 2 & 1/2) was on the way. I was on a trip to NY with my best friend in December when I suspected I might be pregnant again. My friend bought me the test because she couldn’t stand the suspense. When we realized it was positive, she was shocked that I threw it in the trash. She had saved both her positive tests from her two children. I told her she could add it to her collection of pee-smelling mementos, but I’m not schlepping a urine saoked stick back to Atlanta in my carry-on!

Yes, I kept my sticks and my husband knows. They are below my bathroom sink. I think I have about 3 because I was also in disbelief.

The other posters obviously don’t realize that urine is sterile and therefore not “germy”. It’s just a memento; not creepy.

Okay , I admit it. I kept the tests. All SIX of them for the same child. You see, I was told I would never be able to have another child. My only child to date was 17 when I suspected I was pregnant and when the test was positive I could not believe it so I just kept on testing. Then I could not bear to throw away the ‘proof’. I have them put away in a tin shaped like a carousel.

That’s so funny, my daughter and I were talking about this the other day, and she was impressed that I still had my pregnancy test sticks. I also have baby teeth, often still bloody, and wads of hair from haircuts. I also kept the kids themselves, although they are far gernier and messier than the sterile pregnancy tests. Anything associated with having kids is messy. Did all these shocked people freak out when they realized their kids had to have diapers changed and noses blowed? Poor kids. Life is messy. Get over it.

Hey mommy2O - you said: “that urine is sterile and therefore not ‘germy’.” Ewwww.

So let’s get this straight. When you need to sterilize something (like a baby bottle), you just squat and pee on it?

(that good enough for you Ms. Jones?)

Thanks for the tip, Theresa… something else to remind my fiancee NOT to do that honestly I would never have thought she MIGHT do!

I’ve always said y’all’s half of the species is slightly out there (and for the most part it is what makes you adorable - even through the irritation!), but this pretty much takes the cake. Unless you tell me that some women save the placenta. That’s even worse!

Hey Meg, I don’t keep poopy diapers or booger-filled tissues either. Yes, kids are messy… life is messy. That doesn’t mean I need to add to that mess by keeping urine-soaked sticks.

I did not keep my test sticks. I’m not a very sentimental person (and I’m not a packrat) so I don’t usually keep things like that. I still remember the day I took the test and I have my daughter to remind me that I was once pregnant. A friend of mine took four pregnancy tests and then put them on her bathroom counter so that everytime she walked in to the bathroom she would see them and be happy that she was pregnant. Of course, she’s a neat freak so I’m sure she cleaned off the plastic part before putting them anywhere near the bathroom counter (and most of them have a cap that you put over the peed on end, so pee never actually touches anything). I haven’t asked her if she kept them (she is now 5 months prego), but I wouldn’t be surprised if she did.

By DB

Well, I didn’t use the home tests (due to other issues, I was tested at the doctor’s office for both pregnancies) — but I’m quite certain that I would not have saved them if I had! There’s enough clutter in my life!

By Meg

May 15, 2007 9:27 AM | Link to this

Urine is sterile unless you have an infection. Have you ever disinfected with AMMONIA? Did the smell bring something else to mind? I wouldn’t use it on baby bottles, I wouldn’t use clorox or other chemical disinfectants either, but you get the drift. Urine is full of ammonia. That’s why I use clorox to clean, the smell of ammonia reminds me of stuff I should be cleaning instead of stuff I’m cleaning with. That’s still no excuse for those nasty people who pee all over the toilet seats. They should be ejected from society. Urine is sterile, but keep yours to yourself. I won’t show you my pregnancy stick if you promise not to pee on public toilet seats.

By Meg

Peachie, I just meant that people who totally freak out over the thought of keeping their pregnancy stick (let’s face it, some people freaked out!) must have been REALLY set back by the idea of changing diapers and blowing noses.
And what’s the difference between that and keeping baby teeth, with blood and saliva and possibly microscopic food bits clinging to them, which everyone does? Body fluids are body fluids, and blood is far germier. I’m just commenting on the shocked over-reactions here.

Since Meg brought up Ammonia (particularly in urine) and bleach, a PSA (in two parts):

a) DO NOT CLEAN YOUR TOILET WITH BLEACH, or rinse it out if you do. Why? Basic chemistry. Ammonia + Bleach = Cyanide… drives me CRAZY when my own mother does it!

b) Never mix the two chemicals while cleaning any other surface in your home for the same reason. To a healthy teenager or adult, the low-grade cyanide produced (I’m assuming you’re not mixing gallons of the stuff) is irritating, but to smaller children - and babies in particular - it could be deadly under the right (wrong?) circumstances.

I will admit that I did keep the first pregnancy test stick. I put it in a ziplock bag. I’m not sure if it is still around. I didn’t with the second. I didn’t think it was that big a deal either way. When I saved the first, I put it immediately in a bag. It’s no different than when you touch it to urinate on it.

I will set the record straight. Urine issterile when it leaves the body. However, it does come in contact with a little bacteria on the skin and thus is no longer sterile. There is usually not a lot of bacteria in a voided specimen.

That said, your hands have more bacteria than your urine on a stick. Imagine all the things that your hands have touched that you don’t know where it has been. I would be much more concerned about picking up germs from an escalator hand rail, a shopping cart or even money. There are lots of people that do not do a thorough job of washing their hands when they leave the restroom (trust me I’ve seen people merely run their hands under water for 2 seconds and not use soap).

I have all the baby teeth, plus hair from the first cut. I also saved our ID tags and the card on her bassinet from the hospital. I keep every card and gift we received when she was born.

I kept a very detailed calendar of her first year. Every year on her birthday, we pull out the calendar and reminisce……..We do it every year, but I still forget some of the “firsts” she did. I also have her first pair of shoes and a couple of infant outfits that I remember her in, and can’t bear to part with. I have one outfit and shoes that I wore as a baby (that my mother kept), and I have pictures of my daughter in the exact outfit, right down to the shoes…….

My daughter is only 5 and a half months old, but I still have the test. I was debating the other day about throwing it away, but I figured since I’ve saved it this long, why not keep it?!? I’m still trying to decide exactly where to long-term store it. The “pee” end is covered up with a plastic cover that came on it so I don’t think it’s too gross.

I’ve saved my baby’s first soiled diaper and the unwashed bib from where he spit up the first time. I keep them in ziplock bags so it’s not dirty, but once in a while I do open them up just to let them air out a little. I asked the doctor to let me have the little piece from where they circumsized him, but the doctor just mumbled something and left.

I am a packrat, so I obviously considered it, but I opted for scanning it into my computer. I have used the photo for albums that I made.

I love that my Mom saved my wristband from the hospital, she saved some hair from my first haircut, and a couple of baby teeth. I don’t think that I would get the same feeling for a used pregnancy test, which is why I decided not to keep mine.

I’m certainly not as grossed out as some people are. I do wonder how the children will feel about those tests in 20 or 30 years.

For all of you that think its yukie, how about this. A waste product of urine is found is just about all lotions. Its helps the skin to retain moisture (ever heard, soft as a baby’s bottom?) If you don’t believe me, take out a bottle of your favorite lotion and look for urea. Now back to the subject at hand. Yes, I saved my stick from my first born son because I was excited after having a miscarriage earlier that year. I also saved the test from my second son because it was such a shock. When they are old and gone off on their own, I can look at those test and be reminded of the rush of emotions experienced at the very moment I knew they were coming. I think that is a beautiful thing.

I’ve got all 3 sticks from my 3 kids, along with their first haircut. They are stored with caps on and in a ziplock labeled with which boy it was from. I also rinse it off once I had the cap on so it wouldn’t be to gross. Not too gross just in how you store it.

I saved the clamp from the umbilical cord and I have every single hospital ID band she ever wore, her hat, AND the little shirt they wrap them in.

You can never have too many memories! And what a happy time to remember!

I dont’ know if you watch Jon and Kate plus 8 (on TLC) but, she takes a pic of each child and their poopy the first time they poopy on the potty! Now that to me, is weird, but whatever, to each their own!

I think if women were honest about it, they’d realize that all the marketing has convinced them that the test stick is some sort of icon.

I didn’t have one to save - all my tests were done at a lab. I am something of a packrat and a sentimental one at that — but I too wouldn’t have saved a urine sample.

No I never kept the stick. I kept checkup updates, sonograms etc. I did not keep stumps of the cord either(ew!). I do have a CLEAN diaper from the hospital pack given each in their books. 1st hair cut and teeth (for the oldest)…1st hair cut (for the youngest as they have yet to lose teeth). I also have the sonogram where the 2nd child was a twin (we miscarried one so it ended as a single birth).

I would rather have a picture of the their’s father face when I told him. He never believed it even after seeing the stick!

Oh well, like others I have the living proof yelling “Mom” at me enough to know that I did indeed have children.

I had professional tests for the others but, no way would I have saved anything. Nope don’t think so.

My cousins wife wraped it up and gave it to him as a gift. That was kind of cute.

misawa:

I apologize. My HS Chem teacher misled me.

Even still, did some reading on chlorine gas… still doesn’t appear to be such great news for small kids/ babies…. the stuff hovers near the floor, prolonged exposure in a contained area (such as a bathroom) CAN lead to pulmonary edema, though the VAST majority of exposures resulted in “minor occurrances”. I’m ASSUMING that means irritation, maybe causing a baby/ small child to start crying. Still, the FYI appears to hold, if only to avoid a fit…

While urine is sterile in your body, that doesn’t mean that out of your body it stays sterile. Your bathroom is filled with various bacteria and there’s no way the little stick you peed on is still sterile if it has remained in your bathroom.

I have had 2 pregnancies although I have not given birth to a live baby ( one spontaneous miscarriage and 1 ectopic) and I originally took digital tests and the ” pregnant” disappeared after an hour. I went out and bought regular tests so that I would have a keepsake. Once you pee on the stick, if you put on some gloves( or grab a plastic baggie, you can pull the p** part off and keep the rest.

Our babies grow up way too fast! I guess we will do anything to keep our kids little. And saving mementoes is how we accomplish this. I think most pregnancy test have a cap that fits over the test strip. So the part you pee on can be covered afterwards. You moms who save these, will someday have the precious memory of how you felt when you realised you were expecting. And also have an opportunity to share that with that child.I love to watch my kids when I share little mementoes with them. What a way to spend a little time together.

I kept both my sticks from both children. I keep them in a zip lock bag in the bottom of a draw. I never open it so there is “nothing gross” about the whole things. It is just a way of keeping a memory. Yeah, I have the kids as proof that I was pregnant, but it is so nice to sit down and remember the time when you first found out you were pregnant. So, women, continue to keep those sticks.

I am preggers now with my first and I still have my stick. Urine is sterile so it won’t kill you. If you get stung by a jellyfish, someone pees on it and your ok. Anyway, my test comes with a cap so I put the cap on, cleaned it with alcohol and put it away. Call me crazy but some people like to hold on to the smallest things that change their lives forever.

Yep, I kept all of mine…and I took a LOT of them out of disbelief! I have them from both pregnancies. I was told a few years after tyring, that I could not conceive, so when I got that positive result, I thought I may never see this again in my life and even if I miscarry…at least for now, this stick tells me I was a mother once! I put my tests in a ziplock bag and get them out every now and then to remember the joy I felt seeing them. I now have 2 healty children and a ziplock bag full of some of the happiest moments of my life! I am not ashamed of keeping them, nor do I feel it’s “gross”. I kept my daughter’s first tooth…guess that’s “gross” too, and if it’s not and you think thats “normal” then why? It came out of her mouth where over the years it came in contact with only God knows what…I didn’t have her “brush” it after it fell out, and I am sure it has dried blood in the root some where. Give me a break! I will say it loud and proud…I KEPT MY TESTS AND I AM SO GLAD I DID!

i did not keep mine, but i wish i had. i could have laminated them and put them in the scrapbook right next to the umbilical cord’s (laminated) and my son’s circumcision ring (also laminated). my 2 girls have already started loosing teeth, and i have kept every tooth. i also kept (not so “gross” stuff too) hospital bracelets, homecoming outfits (my daughter spit up on her homecoming outfit and i refused to wash it-it is in a ziploc freezer bag…..and it DOES NOT stink!)

i like keeping stuff like that. my oldest 2 and i love to sit down and look through their scrapbooks and babybooks and see all that stuff i saved. the smiles on their faces and the excitement in their voices when i show it to them is priceless. i hope one day when my daughters (both 6) have children they will do the same.

To answer the question…um no! I did not keep my tee-tee stick. I just made copies of all the ultrasound pics and stuck them everywhere!

We took a picture of both sticks (the one she used and the one I used) Yep, I took a pregancy test! Just wanted to make sure they worked with a negitive test case! A word of advice to other guys that want to try it… Pee on it sitting down. It can be quite messy two feet above the toilet:)

If any of you had any sense, you never would have replied to such a stupid blog. This just gives her more reason to post something dumber - if it’s possible, she will.
