No baby yet, but a new blogger to entertain you

We’re still waiting on the baby, but in the meantime we have a new MOMania blogger to fill in.

I had hoped by the time you were reading this blog that we’d be holding our new baby. But, alas not everyone in this family is good at hitting deadlines. The baby is now officially late.

Tired and very fat, I’m handing over the MOMania reins for a little while. I’ve got someone great to fill in on the blog and keep you guys entertained and informed while I take a little maternity time.

Keith Still (Yes, she’s a woman!) is a mother of three girls - ages 9, 6, and 3. She lives in Forsyth County now but grew up in Lithonia. She is one of the wisest mothers I have ever met, and is often who I turn to for mothering advice.

I met Keith working at the college newspaper 13 years ago. She has always bounced between journalism and politics. When she left college, she worked on a U.S. senator’s campaign and eventually became his press secretary.

She returned home to Georgia to rear her family, and we were lucky enough to work together again. Keith helped me write and edit News for Kids for several years.

She is a frequent commenter on the blog (under many different names). I know she will do a great job picking thought-provoking topics for you guys. Please give her a warm welcome and also know she has been given the power to delete and to ban on the blog.

You can leave her ideas today on the blog or e-mail her at ajcmomania@gmail.com. (She also knows the password to the e-mail account - I’m really handing over those keys!)

Completely unrelated topic: I wanted to leave you something fun. My husband found this on You Tube and in light of our minivan discussion from last week, I thought you would enjoy! We’ll keep you posted on the baby’s arrival!

Hey fulton county mom — I’m not supposed to be on but it’s a hard habit to break — I swore I wasn’t going to do any labor kick starts this time — I did them all with rose and she was still 10 days late!! — But there I was yesterday walking around the neighborhood in 30 degree weather trying to get things moving. Also listening to these hynotherapy tapes that are supposed to bring it on —-even the midwives don’t believe that one —-they are relaxing though — have some other funny ones but trying to decide if it’s a column or not so don’t want to give them all away — may buy some eggplant today —-

Theresa, a rule of thumb my OB told me was that each labor time is half of the previous one. I labored very quickly with all three of mine and that rule held true (4 hrs, 2 hrs., and 50 min.), so don’t take it easy when you feel that quickly as the baby may come faster than you expected! Also after #3 the uterus contracts very quickly after birth to get back into its previous shape, and these pains can be as bad as labor pains, so take the medicine they offer you beofrehand!

Scalini’s in Cobb! They garauntee your labor in 48 hours or your meal is free….(then again its eggplant!).

I was induced on #2 they gave them the “in 20% of people the labor will start on its own, usually as we start to consider ….” They gave me the pill at 8PM. 10PM they gave me a sleeping agent…11PM I called the nurse and said, I am not going to sleep this kid wants to arrive! (lol)

I wish you well and get some rest.

Labor kick starts huh? Well…after going through hell to “kick start” three labors, let me tell ya…..DO NOT listen when the docs say sex works. In theory…possibly. But in theory, cold fusion is also a possibilty. All it is really capable of is giving your husband one last hoo-rah and pi$$ing you off. I found with The Boy…the final installment in our family fun trilogy….what really sent me over the edge was house work. More specifically laundry! Nothin’ says “my water broke” like bending over to load the dryer when you’re too big to even see your feet!

And welcome Keith! It should be fun:)

The Scalini eggplant thing really works! Both my daughters used it to bring on delivery (after due date, of course!)

I did the walking and drank raspberry tea and ate eggplant (all in one day). The next morning (a Monday) I went in to labor at about 5:00am. Of course I didn’t actually give birth until 6:00pm on Tuesday, and that was by C-section. Not a good experience. People always say that you forget the pain once you see your baby. Not me. I still remember the pain. It didn’t turn me off from having more children though. I’ll just know to get the epidural when we get there and not wait 20 hours (I tried to be strong).

Previous poster was right about the 3rd one’s timing. You would think after this many you could tell when your in labor but each little package has their own way of arriving. I had false labor for 4 months with my 3rd child & thought it to be false the morning she came. Little one arrived only 20 mins. from entering the hospital. Had my water of broken, she would have been delivered on the side of the road.

I only have one…..she was only 1 day before her due date (although I was sure she would be early with all the extra weight and the pain)….and I labored for 21 hrs. before she made her appearance. Thank God for epidurals. lol

Best of luck, Theresa and welcome Keith hope you brought your blog armor…it gets kinda ugly in here sometimes

I don’t know about blog armor, but I worked in politics for many years so my skin’s pretty thick. I guess we’ll see which is worse, the blogosphere or the world of politics!

Thanks for the welcome and I’ll be blogging tomorrow!

Hang in there, Theresa. I know the waiting is tough.

I am due in five weeks with our first so I am getting kind of anxious about it.

You should take the drive and have dinner at Scalini’s Restaurant on Cobb Parkway in Smyrna. This restaurant is known for inducing labor. Maybe an urban legand, but I personally know of three late mothers who went into labor within hours of leaving the reataurant. They even have an expectant mother special. Check ‘em out: http://www.scalinis.com/

Yay, there actually are other people in Forsyth! I mean, the traffic always sucks at the county line, so I figured some of them must live in the county. Welcome Keith, and for Theresa, I hope the labor goes smoothly. And just to show generalizations aren’t all true, I was actually in labor a couple hours longer with my second child. I hope this is not the case for you!

Theresa, I tried all the tricks with my daughter and she was still 6 days late - then I labored with her for 36 hours. Just relax and it will happen when it happens.

Years ago, I worked at St. Joe’s. We had about 9 babies delivered in 2 years among the nurses on my unit. Funny thing was, nearly every one of them craved Chinese food, and then within 18 hours they would go into labor. It was the unit joke! That, and rearranging the furniture seemed to bring it on.

I just read Kerry’s comment. So true!!! Lets just say if The Boy was born first….there very probably wouldn’t have been 3. Our first daughter was no picnic….but she was breach for quite a while, so it all took about 36 hours. Our second daughter was a breeze! From first contraction to out of the mid wife center, it was 12 1/2 hours. (Now she is the most “spirited” child!…She got me back!) The Boy’s arrival would make Stephen King cringe.

First contraction came on a Friday at 10 am. I was 3 weeks early. I was freaking out because our oldest daughter’s 6th b-day was that Sunday. I was so upset that her special day might be over shadowed by her brother’s birth. We had such a cool day planned for her and the family. But she was a trooper and the pain soon took control. I checked into the hospital at noon. I had 4 epidurals that only took on the left side, due to scar tissue from the previous births and a surgery. And by “took”, I mean only the outer-most edge of the pain was taken away. I could still feel. I was begging my doc to give me his special cocktail. He is famous for giving hard laboring moms a mix of something I am sure has a million dollar street value. So I would slip into a small coma between contractions…that went on for 10 hours. When I could no longer convince…read bribe….him to give me more, I started grabbing unsuspecting newbies by the collar and threatening them to cut me open. So, 82 1/2 hours later….after bargaining with God, satan, and the lady that served my jello…our son came into the world. And I remember the pain…I always will. It frightens me still to this very day. Which is why we are so very glad that The Boy came last. God bless the thirds:)

Hey, I’ve got a question about Scalini’s (I’ve heard the urban legends). My wife is due with our first on March 25 (and she’s more than ready to deliver).

Fulton County Mom - you stated that Scalini’s “guarantees your labor in 48 hours or your meal is free….(then again its eggplant!).” Are you serious? I’d be willing to go there for a possible free meal - but I assume it only qualifies if you’re past your delivery date?

Dinner and a Baby - you stated that Scalini’s even has an expectant mother special. You also provided a web link - but the link didn’t reveal any such special. Do they really have that?

Any help ya’ll can provide would be helpful, cause my wife is more than ready to deliver.

I used to work at Scalini’s and we had over 80 Scalini babies one year. Its not that you are given a free meal if you don’t have the baby, you get a free meal and a little pink or blue shirt if you do have the baby (or go into labor) within 24 hrs or what not.

Its not eggplant, its any of the tomato based sauces that are supposed to work. I had a friend’s mom who swore by one stout bloody mary when she went overdue.

Theresa,

Is either Mike or you hoping for an arrival date of today? Tell Mike happy birthday from an old Naples friend, good luck with the baby.
