(HealthDay News) -- Many skin products that claim to help sun damage, wrinkles and other hallmarks of age include a class of chemical compound called alpha hydroxy acids.

The National Women's Health Information Center says some people who use these products have adverse reactions, which may include:

  • Excessive reddening.
  • Swollen skin, particularly around the eyes.
  • Blisters.
  • Burning.
  • Itching or rash.
  • Discolored skin.
  • Bleeding.
  • Increased risk of sunburn.
