Health Tip: When Your Child Wets the Bed

(HealthDay News) -- Bedwetting is common in children under age 5. The American Academy of Family Physicians says as many as 7 million children wet the bed.

The academy offers these common causes of bedwetting:

  • Genetics. Bedwetting tends to run in families.
  • Difficulty waking up.
  • Delayed development of the central nervous system.
  • Hormonal imbalance.
  • Urinary tract infection.
  • Abnormalities in the urethral valve or ureter.
  • Small bladder, leading to an inability to hold urine for long periods.
