And the Golden Carrot goes to . . . OXFORD CYCLING GROUP

After sitting in a classroom or office most of the day, Florian Pohl escapes from the walls that bind him and lets the wind blow around his face.

"I don't feel like a sardine anymore," said Pohl about riding his bicycle around the scenic campus of Oxford College at Emory University, 38 miles east of Atlanta. The religion professor stopped short of comparing the sensation to a spiritual experience but said it extends beyond exercise. "It's quite liberating," he said.

Pohl is one of about 20 members of the Oxford Cycling Group, a band of faculty, staff and others who ride 15 to 20 miles three times a week, before, during or after work. The routes vary so riders can take advantage of hidden roads and trails throughout the campus and city.

The group united in September when cycling enthusiast Daniel Heisel invited people to join him for regular rides. About three people responded to his e-mail, but as the bikes became a common site around campus, interest grew.

"I just want to see more people being active, not just sitting around during lunch, and enjoying outside as much as they can," said the senior multimedia specialist who also repairs bikes and offers cycling tips and information. All people need is a bike and a helmet, he said.

The rides are the primary source of exercise for Karen Martucci, director of academic services and a recreational rider. In addition to turning colleagues into riding buddies, the group provides motivation and accountability, she said.

"On days when you don't have as much self-motivation, you know that they're counting on you," said the Monroe resident.

Oxford's nature trails and abundance of green space, including 56 tree-filled acres, also attract walking groups. The college encourages physical activity with yoga and indoor cycling classes and a "Take the Stairs" program.
