This week's tryout: Lip balm
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 02/27/08
Eco Lips. $2.49-$3.49; available at Eco-Bella, 1046 N. Highland Drive and online at www.ecolips.com.
Made with organic herbs and moisturizing organic vegetable oils, Eco Lips lip balms provide protection as they soften and moisturize. The petroleum-free products are available in a variety of blends such as Energy (with peppermint, green tea and caffeine), Organic Hemp and Organic Medicinal.
Corey Bishop, 39, Lilburn
The idea of Eco Lips was intriguing. I particularly like the Organic Hemp, which made my lips feel soft and supple and only made me feel a little self-conscience about carrying around a tube with a pot leaf on it. I didn't care for Energy. I prefer to get my caffeine from coffee! None of these products worked well under lipstick. The color just sat there, not really blending in, until it wore off. Eco Lips also sells tinted varieties, which might be a good alternative. Overall, my lips felt good, and it lasted a fair amount of time. I think if organic is your goal, this is a good lip balm for you.

Janet Hicks, 64, Duluth
The AJC sent four lip balms for me to try, a perfect lip solution in this low-humidity winter. There was a nice variety of flavors and types: vanilla, hemp, sports with SPF of 30, caffeine-infused, etc. My husband and I both used the balms, expecting to feel or taste a wide difference in each, but the only one we could tell much difference in was the caffeine/green tea. It had a menthol tingly feeling but no surge of energy occurred. We did like the nice and creamy feel. Since the balms are partly organic, and I like the way they feel, I would buy them, but I would not search them out if I were desperate for quick relief for dry, chapped lips.

Maya Garner, 29, Atlanta
I was excited to try the organic lip balm. I was dealing with a bout of slight dehydration, and my lips were very dry. Each variety of Eco Lips provided instant relief, with the exception of Energy, which, with its infusion of peppermint, green tea and caffeine, felt too medicated. If you're looking for fancy flavors and sticky shine, then this may not be the product for you. However, if you want a smooth, moisturizing, protective formula with an added bonus of being "green," Eco Lips is the way to go.
Maya's rating: ****
