Her background: After having foot surgery last year, Karen Goldstein, 54, could barely walk, much less work out. So when her cast came off and she was able to exercise again, “I was not in as good a shape as I like to be,” says Goldstein, who lives in Dunwoody. “I felt out of shape. I needed to do something.”

What she found: While scrolling through her Comcast On Demand options, she found a slew of free workouts. She decided to try Leslie Sansone’s Walk-N-Tone. “It’s a 32-minute workout in front of your TV that works out all your major muscle groups,” says Goldstein. She began doing the workout and ended up buying her own DVD and even a resistance band to go with it. After doing it for seven months, she says, “I dropped a size and inches, increased my cardio capacity and helped bring back the muscle tone to my arms, shoulders and thighs.”

A breakdown of her workout: After a warm-up of walking in place, lifting her ankles to her knees and doing side-steps, Goldstein says the instructor starts to incorporate the upper body. While Goldstein uses the band, she says you can also do all the moves without it. “You’re raising [the band] straight up, to the side, or in front of you; you’re doing things with the shoulders, chest. You do different things like that and the whole time your feet are moving so it’s equivalent to a two-mile walk,” she says.

Why she sticks with it: While some people might balk at the idea of doing the exact same video over and over, Goldstein says she doesn’t get sick of it. “It’s only 32 minutes long so you can get it in very easily. And it’s still fun. I still enjoy doing it. If you don’t enjoy it you’re not going to do it. That’s my philosophy with exercise.”

Her workout week: Goldstein alternates between doing the Walk-N-Tone video, other TV workouts and a 2 1/2-mile walk around her neighborhood. “Doing something like that at least four to five times a week definitely keeps me in shape,” she says.

Her favorite thing about her video: “I feel great and my clothes look better,” she says.

Her next challenge: While Goldstein is pleased that she’s gone down a size, her main goal is to maintain her health like her 84-year-old mom has. “My mom still walks around the mall. She’s very active. I would like to be like her at her age,” says Goldstein.

Her advice: “If you don’t exercise your body will show the effects. If you take care of yourself when you’re younger, you’ll reap the benefits as you get older. You’ll be healthy and active into your older years.”
