MY FAVORITE WORKOUT: KORI FREDERICK

Boxing keeps her looking like a knock-out

Her background: Kori Frederick, 22, had been a basketball player all her life. But when she moved to Atlanta from Florida last May she didn’t know a lot of people who played her favorite sport. By June, “I needed to get back into shape because I hadn’t been working out,” she said.

Her motivation: When a friend came to visit from L.A., Frederick noticed she looked “amazing” and asked her what she’d been doing. “She said ‘boxing.’ I thought I’d check out this boxing thing,” said Frederick, who describes herself as competitive.

How she got started: A Google search helped her find X3 Sports in Midtown, which is right around the corner from her house. “I went in and tried one of the classes and I joined immediately. I absolutely loved it,” she said.

Focus on fundamentals: Besides taking boxing classes, Frederick works with trainer Alphonso Alexander, whom she said is fantastic because he focuses on the fundamentals. “When I played basketball my big thing was fundamentals, knowing how to play the game, not just going out there and going through the motions,” she said. “That is one of the main reasons I decided to pick this up. His coaching really mirrored a lot of the things that I found important as far as fundamentals.”

A typical class: In her regular boxing class, Frederick said they do shadow boxing, work on punch combinations on the bag and practice sparring. Twice a week Frederick also takes advanced boxing, where they spar in the ring. Frederick said she’s been doing advanced boxing for about three months now. “I’ve never been knocked down. It’s not like we’re going that hard. It’s not necessarily someone you’re trying to fight; you’re trying to have some live action so you can see what you’re capable of doing and what you need to work on.”

What it’s done for her: Since joining last June Frederick said she’s lost about 25 pounds. “I have a lot of energy; my body is toned. I feel really great about the results that I’ve gotten,” she said. And when it comes to specific results in specific body parts, Frederick said her arms and her core have seen the most benefits.

Her workout week: “Schedule permitting, I go to the gym Monday through Friday from 6 p.m. until about 8:30,” said Frederick, who does freelance video production work. After taking her two classes — or working out with Alexander if she can’t make it to class — Frederick usually runs on the treadmill. “If I can make it on Saturday — if I’m not working — I usually go for an hour and a half,” she said. And she still plays a little basketball when she can.

Why it works for her: “I have really enjoyed the challenge of trying to pick up a new sport and do well with it,” said Frederick. And even though she’s an athlete, boxing didn’t come as easily to her as she first assumed. But that’s part of why she likes it so much. “I absolutely love the workout. By far and away — and this is hard for me to say because I’m a basketball girl through and through — this is the best workout I’ve ever had in my life.”

Who else can do it: “I don’t think it’s for everybody. I think if you love to work out and you are the type of person who is capable of pushing yourself then I think it’s definitely for you.”
