The products have been shown to contain dangerous amounts of selenium, which, if taken in excessive amounts, can cause significant hair loss, muscle cramps, diarrhea, joint pain, fatigue, loss of skin and blistering of skin, according to the federal Food and Drug Administration
The distributor recalled these products almost a month ago, but the Georgia Poison Center is still receiving calls about new cases.
The products are distributed by Total Body Essential Nutrition of Atlanta and manufactured by TexAmerican Food Blending Inc. of Hot Springs, Ark.
People experiencing medical problems from using these products should contact their physicians or the Georgia Poison Center at 800-222-1222. The center is advising people to dispose of the products.
The FDA has reported 43 cases of adverse reactions in nine states: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
The adverse reactions generally occurred after five to 10 days of daily ingestion of the product.
