It’s the state championships gone wild over the next two days.
Friday and Saturday, 35 teams will be awarded trophies in track, soccer, tennis and lacrosse.
Here’s a brief breakdown of what’s coming up:
BOYS TRACK
When/where: Friday and Saturday, Jefferson
Important to know: Miller Grove’s Kenneth Gilstrap enters with a region time 10.48 in the 100 and is eyeing the 10.33 state record held by Mt. Zion-Jonesboro’s Deangelo Cherry. Look for Perron Jones (10.36) and Johnathan Finch (10.11), both from Evans, to make this one of the fastest AAAA 100s the state has ever seen.
Other storylines: Parkview’s Brian Detweiler and Brookwood’s Tyler Anyan (9:20.91) have battled all season in the 3200 in AAAAA. In the 400-meter relay, Miller Grove’s Kendrick Ings, Jonathan Norris, Gilstrap and Antoine Hightower have run 40.71. They are chasing the AAAA record (40.66) set by the 1996 Southwest DeKalb team led by former Olympians Terrance Trammell and Angelo Taylor.
GIRLS LACROSSE
When/where: 6 p.m. Saturday, Chattahoochee at Milton.
Important to know: Milton is the only team to win the state championship since the sport was sanctioned by the GHSA and will be gunning for its fifth straight title.
Storylines: This finally might be the year that Milton’s streak ends. Chattahoochee has been considered the state’s No. 1 team for most of the year and gained tremendous confidence after tying Milton in the regular season
BOYS LACROSSE
When/where: 6 p.m. Saturday, Harrison at Lovett
Important to know: Lovett goalie Austin Heaton is one of the state’s most inspirational stories, turning in an all-state performance despite his mother’s death from cancer just before the season started.
Storylines: Lovett has won two of the state’s four championships, including last year’s trophy.
GIRLS TENNIS
When/where: Friday and Saturday, Clayton County International Park
Important to know: Walton has won six out of the last seven championships in the state’s largest division.
Storylines: Marist had its streak of 12 straight titles snapped last year, but looks in championship form behind youngsters Shannon Murdy and Elizabeth Vermillion. Walton’s top two singles players, Elizabeth Kilborn (signed with Georgia Tech) and Emily Lauten (Virginia Tech), haven’t lost a match all season.
BOYS TENNIS
When/where: Friday and Saturday, Clayton County International Park
Important to know: Westminster is aiming to capture its ninth consecutive state title.
Storylines: Walton’s Gokalp Ozdemir (signed with Kennesaw State) moved from Turkey four years ago. Marist’s Taylor McDowell is the younger brother of Georgia Tech’s Amanda McDowell, last year’s NCAA women’s champion.
GIRLS SOCCER
When/where: Friday and Saturday, various locations
Important to know: Parkview is chasing after its third championship in a row in the state’s largest division, while Blessed Trinity goes for No. 4.
Storylines: Harrison made it to the finals without any seniors on the team. St. Pius junior Alexa Newfield (39 goals) has committed to UGA, while three seniors are headed to Georgia State.
BOYS SOCCER
When/where: Friday and Saturday, various locations
Important to know: Inclement weather postponed some semifinal games, but all championship games are expected to be completed by Saturday.
Storylines: Greater Atlanta Christian, which won the AA/A championship in 2007, has four seniors who have started nearly every game of their careers together. Blessed Trinity’s Jorge Rossello is team captain and class valedictorian.
