Published on: 05/19/08 BUFORD Girl Scouts honor top cookie sellers

Tenth-grader Genevieve Wright and 12th-grader Rebecca Wright, both of Buford, are among the 12 top cookie sellers for the Girl Scout Council of Northwest Georgia's 2008 Girl Scout cookie sale program. At the recent Girl Scout Cookie Celebration, the council recognized Genevieve and Rebecca, as well as other girls from the council service area, for their achievements in sales. The 12 top sellers, representing each grade level, sold 19,554 boxes of cookies collectively, with Genevieve selling 1,279 and Rebecca selling 1,180 boxes of cookies. Both Genevieve and Rebecca are repeat top Girl Scout cookie sellers.

Proceeds from the cookie sale are used to fund girls' troop and council-wide activities, provide financial assistance to girls as needed, support volunteer recruitment and training and assist with maintenance of the council's five camp properties.

DACULA

Real estate market on group's program

The Dacula Business Association will meet at City Hall at noon Tuesday for networking, a light luncheon and a presentation about the current state of the real estate market and economy by the Brand Banking Co. All businesses in the 30019 ZIP code are invited.

Dacula's Falcons take championship

The Dacula Falcons 9U (ages 9 and under) Travel Baseball Team trekked to Simpsonville, S.C., to compete in the USSSA Spring Classic and returned to Dacula with the tournament championship. The Falcons battled teams from South Carolina and Georgia all weekend to earn three victories out of a four-game round-robin schedule. They secured the championship with a 10-6 victory over the Carolina Diamond Dawgs.

Head coach is Josh Skelley. Assistant coaches are Brian Hodges, Ken Fointno and Mike Skelley. The team's roster includes: Michael Cherwenka, Tanner Elbers, Jason Fointno, Phillip Green, Chase Hamilton, David Hendrick, Alex Hodges, Walker Lee, Zachary Richardson, Bailey Skelley and Ryan Vigue.

DULUTH

Ceremony of recognition May 24

At 6 p.m. Saturday at the Town Green in Duluth, there will be a Memorial Day Service along with a ceremony of recognition by the city of Duluth and American Legion Post 251 for active-duty U.S. Armed Forces and National Guard personnel and reservists and their families. All servicemen and women and veterans of the Gulf War will be presented with commemorative coins and Blue Star car magnets.

Military services to battle in softball

The Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines will challenge each other in a "Battle of the Warriors" at noon May 25 on Field No. 4 in Bunten Road Park in Duluth.

The Warriors will battle for the chance to have their branch of service named "Top Gun of the Slow Pitch Softball Game," with all proceeds going to the Sentinels of Freedom — Gwinnett, a group of citizens and veterans that helps disabled veterans. The games begin at 1 p.m. with the Army facing the Navy. The second game at 3:30 p.m. is the Air Force battling the Marines. The two winners play each other at 6 p.m. for the Top Gun title and trophy. Food concessions, face painting and music will be available.

Li wins award for community spirit

Caterina Li of Duluth, a senior at Duluth High School, was presented with an engraved bronze medallion as a distinguished finalist in the 2008 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, which honors outstanding youth volunteers. The presentation took place last week during honors night at the school. Caterina was recognized for helping to start Crossroads of Hope, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational funding for underprivileged children in rural China. The organization's fund-raising efforts so far have generated more than $31,000 to provide student scholarships, books, newspapers and school supplies.

ISM-Atlanta votes Padgett president

Raymond W. Padgett was elected president and CEO of the Institute for Supply Management-Atlanta (ISM-Atlanta). Padgett's inauguration will be held June 12 at the Hilton Atlanta Northeast, 5993 Peachtree Industrial Blvd., Norcross. Reservations can be made at www.ism-atlanta.org.

Padgett joined the Institute for Supply Management in 2003 and soon after joined the Board of Directors for ISM-Atlanta. He has served as public relations chairman and vice president. Padgett is a director of the product management group at Stag-Parkway.

SUWANEE

Designs for festival logo are sought

The city of Suwanee is taking entries for its 2008 Suwanee Day festival logo. The deadline for submissions is June 6. This year's festival, to be held Sept. 20 at Town Center Park, marks the 25th celebration of Suwanee Day.

The winning designer of the 2008 festival logo will receive $500, and the design will be on T-shirts, posters and other promotional materials.

Digitally created designs and original artwork including paintings, drawings and photographs will be accepted. Guidelines and an application are available at www.suwaneeday.com.

Fund-raiser seeks backyard athletes

The city of Suwanee is seeking World's Greatest Backyard Athlete entrants. Entry forms are available at www.suwanee.com. The competition will be part of the Life is Good in Suwanee Festival at Town Center Park and is a fund-raiser for Project Joy, a nonprofit organization that uses play to strengthen and heal traumatized children. Each participant must raise $500 for Project Joy. The deadline to sign up is June 2. Court clerk earns certificate

Suwanee Municipal Court Supervisor Mariza Abdeljawad is the first court clerk in Gwinnett County to complete the 40-hour Georgia Council of Court Administrators (GCCA) educational certificate program. Abdeljawad was among 21 court clerks from throughout the state to receive a certificate of court administration. Over a 2 1/2-year period, Abdeljawad attended training sessions on topics that included management, technology, finance, legislation and human resources related to the judicial system.

Eight win top award from Girl Scouts

Eight young women from Gwinnett County were among 41 from the Girl Scout Council of Northwest Georgia who recently earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award girls can earn in Scouting. They are Jennifer Coklan of Lawrenceville, Jasmine Frink of Snellville, Christa Kelly of Buford and Nourine Ahmed, Rachel Munro, Elizabeth Roger, Tasnia Tarannum and Leah Thomas, all of Lilburn.

Girl Scout Gold Award winners combine skills in leadership, communication, time management, presentation, delegation, interpersonal relationships, responsibility and commitment to design, plan, implement and evaluate a 65-hour project that makes a significant difference in their communities. The process takes three to four years to complete.

Scout Blast held at fairgrounds

The Northeast Georgia Council of Boy Scouts of America (BSA) recently sponsored Scout Blast 2008 at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds. Thousands of Scouts, friends, family and the public participated. Scout Blast is an annual event hosted by the council's Apalachee and Sweetwater Districts.

The weekend consisted of live demonstrations and exhibits of Scouting skills and outdoor activities. Special events included competition between Explorer posts and a council-wide Pinewood Derby race.

Adult care center garners donations

Our Parents' Keeper Adult Day Care Center recently received a $500 donation from Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage/ Coldwell Banker CARES Foundation of East Atlanta Region. The nonprofit organization also received donations from Metro Brokers, GMAC North Fulton representative David Mills and Stone Mountain Dodge Chrysler Jeep. Scholarships given by credit union

Georgia Federal Credit Union (GFCU) recently awarded scholarships to six students and eight teachers and staff members. Receiving the $1,500 GFCU Career Advancement Founder's Scholarship were Robert Maffeo, teacher at Collins Hill High; Ingrid Smyrna, paraprofessional at Beaver Ridge Elementary; Amanda Shirah, paraprofessional at Meadowcreek Elementary; Denise Nelson, technology support technician at R.D. Head Elementary; Erica Dwinell, teacher at Rock Springs Elementary; Ann Hamner, school nutrition program at Gwin Oaks Elementary; Robin Aubrey, teacher at Duluth High; and Asa Valente, paraprofessional at Berkeley Lake Elementary.

To apply for a scholarship, applicants must be credit union members and enrolled in an accredited program at a college, university or technical institute for career advancement.

The $2,000 GFCU Legacy Scholarship recipients are Stephanie Griffiths and Caitlin Moyer, both of Central Gwinnett High; Catherine Williams and Daryan Rahimzadeh, both of Grayson High; Carly Kurdelmeier of North Gwinnett High; and Tyler Rogers of Brookwood High.

A student scholarship applicant must be a Gwinnett high school senior who plans to pursue an education degree.
