One person was killed Tuesday afternoon when a small plane crashed shortly after takeoff from DeKalb Peachtree Airport near Chamblee.
The Piper Saratoga was headed for Branch County Memorial Airport in Coldwater, Mich. when it slammed into the front yard of a home on Chamblee-Dunwoody Road just before 2 p.m., said Federal Aviation Authority spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.
No flight plan was filed, or required because of clear weather conditions, but it appeared only one person was on the aircraft, which disintegrated on impact.
The plane was registered to Women’s Healthcare Inc. of Jacksonville Beach, Fla. No other information was available about the plane or pilot.
Rescue crews from DeKalb County and Chamblee responded to the crash, near Interstate 285, though there appeared to be no injuries on the ground.
The National Transportation Safety Board will lead an investigation into the crash, with help from the FAA. Investigators from both agencies were at the scene Tuesday afternoon, Bergen said.
