Do you dig manure?

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Little Creek Farm Conservancy in DeKalb County invites gardeners out for some of nature's finest fertilizer. Five bucks gets you a leaf bag full, and $25 fills the bed of your pickup.

Let's pause to note that even with the drought on, Georgia law permits professional car washes to do their thing. It's also worth mentioning that the product isn't straight from the horse's south. It's composted manure — aged like a fine wine.

Garden guy Walter Reeves will be at the Atlanta Home Show at the Georgia World Congress Center this Saturday but has been to the Little Creek event in the past.

"They had a line of trucks like you wouldn't believe," he said. After all, when it comes to feeding your garden, No. 2 is No. 1.

"Composted horse manure makes wonderful top dressing in the spring," Reeves said.

The layer becomes an earthworm buffet, summoning the wiggly crawlers to come enrich and aerate your dirt. "Earthworms are your little garden friends," Reeves said.

Little Creek holds "Manure Day" twice a year, and proceeds support organic pasture management. 2057 Lawrenceville Hwy. in Decatur; 404-422-1383; littlecreekfarm.org.
