Derrick Favors wins Naismith Trophy

Georgia Tech commitment receives prestigious national award

Derrick Favors of South Atlanta High is the Naismith Trophy winner for boys high school basketball, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced today.

The Naismith Trophy is the most prestigious individual national award for high school basketball players.

Favors, a 6-foot-9 post player who plans to sign with Georgia Tech in April, is the third Georgia player in six years to win the Naismith, behind Louis Williams of South Gwinnett (2005) and Dwight Howard of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy (2004). Williams and Howard play in the NBA.

Favors’ South Atlanta team is ranked No. 1 in Georgia’s Class AAA and will play a state semifinal against Columbia on Friday at 8:30 p.m. at the Macon Centreplex.
