Georgia Southern has gotten permission to interview Tech assistant Charlton Young for the Eagles’ head-coaching job, Tech athletics director Dan Radakovich confirmed Wednesday morning.

Radakovich described the call he received from Georgia Southern as “more of a courtesy.”

Eagles coach Jeff Price resigned Monday, and the basketball program is under NCAA investigation.

The Eagles finished 8-22 this past season. Three players were suspended for the final 10 games for institutional and departmental issues.

Young, 37, an assistant at Tech for four years, starred at Georgia Southern as a player and was elected to the university’s sports Hall of Fame last year.

Georgia Southern athletics director Sam Baker issued this statement Wednesday:

“I have called several institutions to gain permission to contact specific members of their basketball staff in relation to our men’s basketball coaching search. We feel at this time it is prudent to gain permission so that if and when a particular individual is deemed to be a viable candidate, we can move quickly.”

He declined further comment. Young also declined to comment.

Young has not been interviewed yet, Tech coach Paul Hewitt said.
