  • 011812 Atlanta, Ga; Third grade students of Laurel Ridge Elementary School look up inside the gold dome sitting on the glass bricks in the capitol rotunda during a tour at the State Capitol Wednesday morning in Atlanta, Ga., January 18, 2012. This was my first year as the AJC Legislature Photographer and I've always loved the opportunity to photograph inside Georgia's State Capitol building. It's a great building with plenty of photograph friendly areas including two balconies looking over the main level. The Capitol is never short on tours from local schools and this day was no exception. Knowing what happens during a tour I put myself in location on the third floor looking down on the group of Elementary students as they were told about the Capitol Rotunda. And another thing I know at some point during the presentation by the tour guide, he/she always comments on the Gold Dome of the capitol and like clockwork, all of the students looked up in amazement at the same time at the beauty of their State Capitol.   • Feb. 28, 2012- LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL: Atlanta Braves outfielder Jose Constanza can't make a catch on a fly ball as he crashes into the outfield wall during Atlanta Braves Spring Training at Champion Stadium in the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Tuesday morning in Lake Buena Vista, Fl., Feb. 28, 2012. This was my second year photographing Atlanta Braves Spring Training and one of my favorite positions to photograph is the outfielders. During a portion of Spring Training, coaches setup a ball machine to throw balls high in the air so outfielders can practice catching fly balls close to the outfield wall. This photograph is great because Constanza happened to climb the wall for a fly ball exactly where a Braves logo was printed on the wall. This photograph combines a great moment with an interesting background, had the ball drifted to the right or left 10 feet the background would have been blank. Jason Getz jgetz@ajc.com

As a photographer I'm always looking for moments to photograph and when I saw Cristhian put his arm around Jair I quickly took a photo.   • March 15, 2012 DECATUR: Don Sneiderman reacts after the reading of the verdict of the Hemy Neuman trial in the DeKalb County Courthouse Thursday afternoon in Decatur, Ga., March 15, 2012. The jury ruled Hemy Neuman guilty but mentally ill to count 1 and guilty on count 2. Hemy Neuman, accused in the shooting death of Rusty Sneiderman, Don� son, outside a Dunwoody preschool. This was probably the highest profile news story that I photographed in 2012. The Hemy Neuman trail was a national event and I happened to cover the only day that really mattered, verdict day. I was very nervous to cover the event but quickly made a dramatic photograph of Don Sneiderman reacting to the news about the killer of his son Rusty. These photographs of someone grieving are difficult to take, but as a journalist my job is to tell the story whether I want to or not. Nathan Deal in the North Wing of the Capitol Wednesday afternoon in Atlanta, Ga., March 28, 2012. I've always wanted to take this photograph but there was never anything going on inside the Capitol when the sun shined on the Oglethorpe bust, until that day. I saw the sun shining on the sculpture at the same time this press conference was happening and I jumped at the chance to make this photograph. Winston Branch Monday afternoon in Atlanta, Ga., April 2, 2011. This was a photograph for a story on the Butler Street YMCA but to me this photograph is all about light. One aspect of my job that I love is meeting new and interesting people. These people who spend a lot of time and money collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia were very interesting to me. I loved the Coca-Cola bottle setups that people had on display like Mr. Taylor's. I loved the repetition of the photograph of Taylor putting a bottle back on display after looking at it.   • May 1, 2012 - Cartersville: Tufting associate Samantha Cherry works on cutting two six-foot carpets from one twelve-foot carpet at Shaw Industries Plant 15 Tuesday afternoon in Cartersville, Ga., Ga., May 1, 2012. The story was about the large carpet industry in Cartersville and my job was to create an interesting photograph out of a routine tour of a Shaw Industries Plant. Even though I would never buy this carpet myself, the bright green color of this carpet makes this photograph pop. I loved the graphic lines of the machine and that hint of orange in the vest of the employee to give the reader just a hint of another color so it's not totally monochromatic. This was my third year covering the High School Boys Track Championships in Jefferson and I've never seen anyone get more excited about second place before. The Yellow River Game Ranch opened in 1962 and was celebrating it's 50-year anniversary this year. The Yellow River Game Ranch is famous for the some of the most tame deer.   • June 19, 2012 - Griffin, Ga: University of Georgia Professor of Horticulture Scott NeSmith picks blueberries at the Westbrook Farm at the University of Georgia Griffin Campus Tuesday afternoon in Griffin, Ga., June 19, 2012. NeSmith is the state's top blueberry scientist. I utilized a technique shooting with a small f/stop number to get a group of blueberries in the foreground out of focus to give the photograph depth. I liked this image because it gives the reader a feel of how full of blueberries the bushes were. And because I had to taste a few, these were the best blueberries I've ever had. Saturday's high hit 106, making it the hottest day ever in the state of Georgia. Because of the extreme heat we needed some more hot weather features. After working a full day on Saturday, I decided to go to the nearest fountain and I was pleased to get this image of Briana running through the fountain.   • July 4, 2012 - Atlanta, Ga: Placide Muhizi, of Athens, Ga., rests after running his first Peachtree Road Race during the 43rd running of the Peachtree Road Race at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Ga., July 4, 2012. Muhizi was waiting for his wife to finish the race. One of my favorite events of the year to photograph is the Peachtree Road Race. I usually enjoy walking through Piedmont Park following the race to look for post-race photographs. I saw Placide sitting on the side of the fence, away from everyone and I loved the image. I like the fact that among 60,000 runners he chose to take a quiet break following his run and rest by himself on a fence as he waited for his wife to finish. JASON GETZ / JGETZ@AJC.COM
  • July 14, 2012 - Atlanta, Ga: The sun shines through a portal at Turner Field as Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones follows through for a ground out in the seventh inning of their game against the New York Mets at Turner Field Saturday afternoon in Atlanta, Ga., July 14, 2012. Even though I only photographed around a handful of Atlanta Braves home games, every time I was there I tried to get an image of retiring third baseman Chipper Jones. For this game I wanted to be in the stands in the afternoon because it's a 4pm game. Only during the 4pm games does the shadows creep across the infield and on home plate. So when Chipper Jones went to bat in the 7th inning I was hoping for a beautiful shadow swing portrait and I wasn't disappointed. Only had it actually been a hit but I'll still take it.   • August 7, 2012 - Marietta, Ga: Walton offensive lineman Brandon Kublanow is one of the AJC Super 11 shown at his high school Tuesday morning in Marietta, Ga., August 7, 2012. This was my fourth year shooting the annual AJC Super 11 portrait series. For this year� theme I wanted to do something different and I wanted to try and connect the players to the theme. The theme that jumped out to me was inspired by all the photographs you see on social media taken by photography apps on smart phone. Photography apps such as the hipstamatic and the instagram give images an analog feel from a digital camera. The apps transform these images making them look like an old photograph, by faded colors, soft focus lenses and unique borders. To further push this theme into my photographs I wanted to pose the players similar to ways players posed for photographs in the 1950s and 1960s. To get the look of a retro football portrait I used a few techniques. I used a tilt-shift lense to put the focus plane off to an angle, I used high powered flashes to separate the players from the background, and I used a photography application called Camerabag2 to apply a �aper�border to each photograph. Even though at first this portrait of Walton offensive lineman Brandon Kublanow was not my favorite of the group, after the AJC Page Designer chose it to be the largest photo on the newspaper layout, it grew on me because the pose and style captured exactly what I was going for with this project.   • August 24, 2012 - Atlanta, Ga: U.S. Congressman and Civil Rights Leader John Lewis shakes hands with a spectator before he was honored with the dedication of HERO, a mural honoring Lewis, on the west side of the Renaissance Walk at the corner of Jesse Hill Jr. Drive N.E., and Auburn Avenue Friday morning in Atlanta, Ga., August 24, 2012. After looking at the gigantic portrait of Congressman Lewis I wanted to capture an image of the Congressman similar to the image on the wall. After he arrived for the dedication he began shaking hands of many spectators and I began shooting low with a wide angle lense to try and capture the image I had in mind.   • September 17, 2012 - Atlanta, Ga.,: Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, left, greets Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning after the Falcons defeated the Broncos 27-21 in the Georgia Dome Monday night in Atlanta, Ga., September 17, 2012. One of my favorite events to cover is football and especially Atlanta's NFL team, the Atlanta Falcons. Personally I am a huge NFL fan and I've played Fantasy Football for years. So, when the Falcons hosted the Broncos I wanted, like dozens of other professional photographers that night, wanted to get a photograph of Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan greeting Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning following the game. The problem is, at the end of the game it's a free-for-all crapshoot to get in position for this photograph. As soon as the clocked ended I ran out to the middle of the field and tried to position myself in between the two quarterbacks. For this one time it worked great, I've been unlucky about a dozen other times, often getting run over by fellow photographers. JASON GETZ / JGETZ@AJC.COM
  • October 2, 2012 - Atlanta, Ga.,: At 7:00 AM, rush hour traffic approaches the HOT lanes entrance near the Old Peachtree Road exit with a sign posting the current charges for use of the HOT lanes on I-85 south Tuesday morning in Duluth, Ga., October 2, 2012. For the one-year anniversary of the HOT lanes on I-85 I wanted to capture a toll sign at the peak of the toll. So I worked closely with AJC reporter Ariel Hart and she found a location for me that would be busy and sure enough it worked out great that the toll was the highest it's ever been in the last year. The time of day, pre-dawn was perfect for an artsy photograph as I put my camera on a tripod and took several photographs with a timed exposure to get the path of automobile tail lights. This exposure ended up being an 1/8 of a second, long enough to get traffic going around 70 miles per hour. JASON GETZ / JGETZ@AJC.COM
  • November 6, 2012 - Atlanta, Ga: Mitt Romney supporter reacts as news is announced that Barack Obama is re-elected as president as they watch the election results during the election night party for the 2012 U.S. presidential election results at the Grand Hyatt Buckhead Tuesday night in Atlanta, Ga., November 6, 2012. I am the lead political photographer for the AJC and I had my choice of where I wanted to be for the presidential election night. This election was probably one of the most polarizing election that I've ever seen. So, at best the spectators would be celebrating and at worst they would be dejected. So describe covering this event like photographing a group of passionate fans watching a really close football game where each team takes the lead several times and it become an emotional rollercoaster. This happened and we all know that emotions were down when it was announced that Mitt Romney lost to Barack Obama. These ladies were emotional throughout the evening and when the moment happened two women, who wished to not be identified, reacted in disbelief at the same time. JASON GETZ / JGETZ@AJC.COM
