Demolition of old factory could begin next week

Demolition of the old Ford Motor Co. assembly plant in Hapeville could begin as early as next week after Ford and Jacoby Development closed the sale of the property Wednesday night.

Jacoby plans to redevelop the 122-acre site next to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport into an "aerotropolis" — an aviation-intensive business district that might include office, retail, restaurant, hotel and airport parking.

The sale price was not disclosed.

"Just as the Ford assembly plant has been an economic engine for the region for more than half a century, this redevelopment will build on the powerful economic engine that is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport," Jim Jacoby, chairman and CEO of Jacoby Development, said.

Jacoby hopes to capitalize on traffic at the future Maynard Holbrook Jackson Jr. International Terminal, which is scheduled to open in three years.

Motorists on I-75 could see heavy equipment starting to pull down the plant buildings next week, said Scott Condra, Jacoby senior vice president. Demolition and environmental clean up is expected to take about 12 months. After that construction can begin.

Jacoby converted the former Atlantic Steel mill site into Atlantic Station, the 138-acre mixed-project in Midtown. Still under construction, Atlantic Station accelerated infill development in Atlanta.

The environmental work in Hapeville will not be as complicated as the work done at the Atlantic Station site, Condra and Jacoby said. The Ford plant opened in 1947 and closed in October 2006. Among the contaminants to be removed will be spilled fuel and paint solids, Condra said.

After the site preparation work is complete, a 4,000-space airport parking area is scheduled to be built.

Jacoby said no buildings will go up until tenants are signed. One of the ideas being floated is a trade mart for green construction, he said.

"The new development will bring thousands of jobs to our community," Hapeville Mayor Alan Hallman said.

At different times the assembly plant built the Ford Fairlane, Fairmont, Falcon, Galaxie, Granada, LTD, Rachero, Torino, Thunderbird, Marquis, Sable and Taurus.

TO Welfare Stats: if you look at the lastest census figures that show the population of the US at just over 281,000,000 people whites compromise approx 211,000,000 of those people while blacks compromise only just under 37,000.000. If you look at SHEER percentages Eracism's statement is 100% correct. But of course you wouldn't would you?

JB you are an idiot. I didn't know anybody that swept floors at the Ford Plant that made $57 per hour, and their insurance benefits were no different than any other blue collar job. Ford closed because of inept management that poured money into SUV's and Trucks thinking the price of gas would never go up as much as it has. it also cost more to ship parts from the vendors up north to Hapeville than it did to the other plant in Chicagw making Tauruses so they kept that plant open and closed this one.

The workers at the Japanese auto plants in this country make as much as the workers at Ford made but they are non union because the employer treats them the way they should be treated, and they reward loyalty and good productivity. Not so with Ford or GM.

If American business treated their employees decently and gave them security instead of buying in, milking dry and selling out, this plant would still be open. Even at vastly reduced wages, NO American workers can compete with what they pay in Mexico.

Darb, as someone who lives on IVAN ALLEN JUNIOR BOULEVARD, I disagree with your assertion that nothing got named after him. This name change was put in over the objections of the neighborhood who wanted the entire road to have the single name Ralph McGill. Also if you've noticed the new W Hotel, the new Ernst & Young tower, and the new Southern Company headquarters building, they're all part of ALLEN PLAZA, named after Ivan Allen Jr. There is even talk of renaming the Civic Center MARTA station to Ivan Allen station.

All this talk about Hartsfield-Jackson is moronic anyway. We only have one real airport in metro Atlanta and everyone I know calls it "the airport". Much like the flaggers who scream "Heritage", it seems that "Hartsfield" has become a rally cry for those with a particular racial agenda. Mayor Hartsfield would be mortified at what his name has come to represent.

I dont have any problems with the redevelopment of the Ford plant, but pne thing jumped out at me again when it was mentioned about being prepared for the opening of the Maynard Jackson Int'l Terminal. Isnt it bad enough that Atlanta's new "black widow" told everyone that Maynard always wanted the airport named after her husband. To heck with the Hartsfield name that went back many years, and now we have Hartsfield/Jackson airport, what BS !!! Now we will have to put up with a terminal named after Maynard too! Pretty sad when you think that upon the death of Ivan Allen the only thing our city fathers, and mothers could do is erect a statue of him downtown. Something aint right, New Orleans & Detriot have npthing to compare to Atlanta, the true national chocolate city.

Wow... the status quo once again. Why not accept the realities of the challenges we face today and look forward. Instead of looking backward, lets move toward the future, with an economic engine solving problems rather than recreating them. An international center with a focus on environmental sustainability for instance. Something in cooperation with local universities providing biological resources for the GA Aquarium that gives people a reason to travel here rather than build an altar to the dilapidated old technology of aviation. ...Cos' an industrial office park by any other name still stinks.

WOW James all i can say is that if that is what they are building then it will be awesome and it "may" take some patrons from Atlantic Station and Buckhead seeing that most of the residents in Clayton County have no where to "party" this would be a huge boom for the southside.

it will bring more jobs and money to the area and that is before you even factor in the new International Terminal somehting that the "other" cant claim in their "sales pitch"

No plane noise in Hapeville?!? I lived there for a year. A stone's throw from the Ford Plant. The ONLY time you didn't hear the planes was Midnight Saturday to Noon Sunday. The first time I heard birds sing I started thinking I was back home with my parents. It was so quiet. So, unless you live in a sound proofed home. Do not espouse that there is no plane noise in Hapeville. That was right up there with the paint fumes that covered the city every two weeks when they painted the cars. Its a shame, as Hapeville is a sweet little city.

I certainly hope that Jacoby does a better job converting the Ford plant than they did with Atlantic Station. AS has been open a little more than 3 years, and already it looks worn out! Workers are already having to replace much of the facades of most of the buildings at AS because of the hasty construction and poor quality. At least 10 buildings at AS have water leaks. So, to Jacoby Development: PLEASE do a better job in Hapeville!

Lynn, Ford is gone because the union demanded that floor sweepers make $57.00 an hour and have medical benefits better than Congress, working and retired. That's why they ( and Eastern Airlines) are gone. THE NUMBERS DON'T WORK !!!!!!!!!!!Oh yea, 12 weeks Paid vacation..Geez.
