San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathewsmissed practice Thursday, still not medically cleared to resume activity as he deals with the concussion he suffered Sunday against the Oakland Raiders, according to beat writer Michael Gehlken.
Through five games, Mathews has 234 rushing yards, 66 receiving yards and a touchdown. He was held to eight rushing yards Sunday before leaving with the concussion. Meanwhile, the team's new running back arrival, Danny Woodhead, has 327 all-purpose yards and three scores, easily outperforming Mathews.
Fantasy impact: Mathews has until Monday to try to get back on the field this week, but that would leave fantasy owners with few options if he proves unable to go. Ultimately, if the news on his health doesn't change by Friday or Saturday at the latest, fantasy owners should make alternate plans.
Meanwhile, Woodhead is proving to be a viable fantasy option in San Diego. With or without Mathews, it seems likely Woodhead will be on the field to catch balls at least. If Mathews misses, Ronnie Brown will get time, but neither guy does what Woodhead does, so he'll get his. Woodhead probably isn't a standard-league option, but he could be useful in deeper and/or PPR leagues.
