Mexico capped off an improbable run Wednesday night by defeating tournament favorite Puerto Rico 91-89 to win the title game at the FIBA Americas championship. Atlanta Hawks center Gustavo Ayon turned in another steller performance finishing with 20 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
Mexico jumped out to an early 26-18 lead only to see Puerto Rico come roaring back in the second and third quarters. Mexico finished strong outscoring Puerto Rico 25-18 over the final 10 minutes and had to come up with several defensive stops at the end to hold on.
Ayon was named as the tournament MVP and with averages of 17.5 points and 9.6 rebounds on 58 percent shooting despite going 7-18 in the championship.
