The Ebony Fashion Fair fashion show hit town Sunday at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. The sold out event represented the 50th anniversary of the nation’s largest traveling fashion show.

Established in 1958 by John H. Johnson (former publisher of Ebony magazine) and his wife, Eunice, the event has brought entertainment, and more than $55 million in funds to charitable organizations across the country. It also helped launch the careers of a number of African-Americans in fashion.

Richard Roundtree aka “Shaft,” was a former model and designers such as Stephen Burrows, have had their work grace the runway. In addition, the event served to expose mostly African-American audiences to designer fashions from around the world.

Today, the show has earned a reputation for outrageous outfits and lively presentation. Have you ever attended the Ebony Fashion Fair fashion show? Is it still relevant after all these years?

My sister was the token white girl in the mid-80s but she was in most of the ads in Ebony and Jet. She was on GMA too.

The clothing in the show is the work of internationally recognized designers. You would have to contact the companies directly to find out where a specific garment is available for retail purchase.

On Saturday, February 22, I attended the Ebony Fashion Fair Show in Memphis, TN. I thoroughly enjoyed the show, however I thought the sizes of the models were unrealistic to our society. I was shocked to see only one so-called full-figured model in the group. This full-figured model appeared to be a size 10. The majority of the models in the show were size 0 to 3. As we all know, the only people are size 0 to 3 are celebrities. I would like to see more full figured modes, size 12 to 22 in your future shows.
