Sigrid Olsen Store closing
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Sigrid Olsen fans will have to kiss the brand goodbye.
Parent company Liz Claiborne, Inc. announced today that they would close 54 Sigrid Olsen stores nationwide by mid-2008. That includes the Phipps Plaza store that opened in June 2005. Store representatives were not sure of the exact closing date.
Sigrid Olsen had been losing money over the past several years, said William L. McComb, CEO of Claiborne, Inc. in a statement.
The 20-year-old line began as resort wear and expanded into a lifestyle brand of casual women’s clothing, handbags, and some home items. It is known for sweaters with artistic details and the use of fine materials that look more expensive than the mid-range pricing.
The brand (along with 15 others) was under review by Liz Claiborne Inc., which also counts Juicy Couture, Kate Spade, and Lucky Brand Jeans as part of its diverse portfolio of brands.
Liz Claiborne, the designer, died last year. Her namesake brand has struggled to overcome the image of being stodgy and is reportedly seeking hip designers such as John Bartlett and Tracy Reese to design for the label.
Sigrid Olsen, which had strong appeal to mature women, seems to be a casualty of the company’s focus on more youthful brands.
What do you think of Sigrid Olsen closing?
Is it another slap in the face for mature shoppers?

Great! Another line of clothes that actually covers the “mature” figure is closing. Don’t they realize that the hip, bare-naked trend doesn’t look appropriate on most of us.

I can’t tell you how disappointed I am! Although, I truly think the line was mismanaged. I originally found it in a Liz Claiborne outlet store about 5 years ago and I started looking for other places to buy it. They have since taken the line out of almost all the outlets. I think the line needed more exposure and they needed to expand their stores a little more slowly to give it time to catch on. Also, the placement of their stores wasn’t always the best (between two youth-oriented shops). Once again, we are the losers!

This is very disappointing!!! I and many of my friends and associates have enjoyed Sigrid Olsen’s designs since the company first started in the mid-1980’s. Sigrid’s artistic eye for color, her keen sense of style and good taste, and her true commitment to the maturing customer was unwaivering. A number of charities also benefitted from Sigrid’s sincere dedication to helping those in need.
An interesting thought to ponder. One has to question Liz Claiborne’s real motivation in acquiring this talented designer’s company. Was it to absorb a strong competitor and then…? Regardless, we are looking forward to seeing Sigrid’s designs in perhaps another venue and wish her the best!!!

I am so upset about losing Sigrid Olsen. I’m in my early 50’s and it is the only line I can always count on to fit. I’ve been buying her clothes for years and the colors and quality and design are just beautiful. There’s really nothing like it. I wish there was something we could do about it!
