Fooled by a Fake

You would think that someone who writes about shopping would be an avid user of eBay. But the one and only purchase I ever made on the site was among my worst shopping experiences ever.

The 80’s style metallic LeSportsac messenger bag that I sniped from the highest bidder in the final minutes ripped right down the seam about 3 days after I started carrying it. I am convinced it was fake, but why would anyone ever make a fake LeSportsac bag?

That’s when I realized nothing is safe anymore…clothes, handbags, watches, fragrance (years ago vendors in NY were selling a fragrance called “CK UNO”. Seriously.)

It’s a bit out of hand.

Have you been fooled by a fake? What’s the story?

I have had a prada fake for a while and love it .. normally I don’t like to buy knock offs but sometimes you just have to get it and live with it.

The whole country was fooled by a fake - his name was Bill Clinton. Now the world is being fooled by another fake - his name is Al Gore.

I bought a fake Prada wallet on eBay. I knew it was fake because it was only $25. It looks pretty good for a fake and has lasted for 3 years so I’m happy. I saw a kiosk at a mall selling “Kade Spate” bags, one time. A little misspelling and all is OK, huh?

Who cares??? If you are sooooo hung up on name brands and you can’t afford the real thing…I wouldn’t admit it. Moron

I think people who buy knockoffs are more concerned about carrying the name than the people who spend money to buy the real thing (directly and not off ebay). I have a real registered Dooney & Burke and I’m proud of it. I laugh at all of the knock offs I see in those purse/accessory stores. I could care less really about the name.. I just like buying quality…. This purse will last for years and years to come. And I got it on clearance with a friends and family extra 20% off… I also got my coach wallet from macy’s for just over $20 (again clearance and friends & family)… And SOME people think its wrong to carry a designer purse… I think it’s WORSE to carry a fake!! That’s just trying to deceive people. I will buy designer stuff and spend the money for it because I am tired of cheaply made, mass-produced, walmart crap.. I like stuff that someone put thought into and is usually handmade or partially hand made by someone. And is also made with quality materials. I have been happier with my designer shoes and bag than with all of the other crap I used to buy. And if you want to treat me like a snob because I buy it, go right ahead. I know I’m buying QUALITY!

I was looking for a mini-backpack to carry my camera and it’s accessories in and I wantes something cute. I don’t really care about brand names. So, I found one I liked. When it came it it said Kate Spade on it but it looked like it was probably a fake. It only cost $20, too. But it was cute and didn’t fall apart and was perfect for my camera.

Quality doesn’t always = to money, just to let some know. A lot of the best items i have bought for my wife were at wally world, and they have lasted. Now, we make a little more money and can afford nicer things, so my wife wanted a D&B purse. We bought it, within the week the strap broke. I got my money back after quite a bit of complaining (gee, at wally world i can return anything no hassle). Funny how i spend hundreds of dollars on their item and they give me hell when they figure out that their product is defective. Name brand means nothing to me for the most part. Let’s see, hmmm, i can only think of 1 thing tru to my heart that i can’t accept any imitations on: Pop-Tarts. Store brand sucks.

FUTURE ADVICE: If anyone reading this receives a catalog in the mail for a company called “Lakeside Collection”, toss the book out and don’t buy anything from it!! It’s all expensive and CHEAPLY made-worse than anything i’ve ever bought!

Posters are missing the whole point of the topic, which is “Have you been DECEIVED in a transaction?”. Not about your viewpoint on purchasing knock-offs. It’s one thing to know that a deal is too good to be the genuine article, as opposed to buying with confidence and discovering it was a scam. So to that end, I look more for a fraudulent listings. I saw an ad for a vintage Gibson guitar. A simple question to the seller tipped me off that it was completely bogus. The grammar on the listing was flawless, while the response from the seller was like that of someone without any command of the English language. He was quite anxious to sell, and it was clear that had I answered him, I would have been met with the offer to send money “in order to hold it” and he would “trust” me with the rest until he got back in town. Obviously, the seller had cut and pasted generic photos and text. Needless to say, that was the end of that.

Sometimes, the fakes look better than the real. No harm in having either — whatever one can afford. I have both real and fake Coach purses.

I’m with Julie. I was married to a fake for just over 3 years. Our divorce will be final within the week. And I guess I had a few fakes in high school and college I had to deal with - backstabbing little girls. Well, now that I think about it, I have some of those at work, too…it’s exhausting!

On another note, although I have nothing against name brands or fakes, or those who choose to carry either or both, I personally would prefer to have a non-designer/name brand whatever than a fake………..I’d rather just have something nice and of quality, those items are available without some big designer name attached to it, believe it or not! I have real Coaches (purses and a belt), and I have really nice shoes/clothes that are not designer (but one would think so by the look). And no, $$$ do not always = quality!

I’m not a designer w*******, so I don’t really care. I don’t understand spending hundreds of dollars on ONE purse.

I’ll keep my Target $25.00 purse thank you, and it will last 5 years.

Anyone who spends that kind of money on a purse has more money than sense.

yeah we have been living with a fraud/puppet prez for two terms so being deceived by fake name brand bags is just spilt milk… and (Anyone But Hillary) is dumb if they think clinton was worse than bush

just look for items made in Italy, Spain, Brazil, etc and you cannot go wrong. These are very high quality and made to last. Expensive items are not necessarily quality.

LOL @ Mrs. Warren that thinks her bags and wallet aren’t mass-produced.

I get real things are gifts and buy less expensive things for myself. Who cares if its cheaply made? Its a purse, what do you plan on carrying in it, bricks? So you can laugh at me for having a bootleg, but understand that I’m laughing back because you paid much much more for something that looks exactly like my bootleg.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that most of the posters here seem to have no problem with helping people break the law by purchasing fake brand-name merchandise. They are probably the same people who used Napster to steal music.

And this state is soooo conservative and sooooo religious and sooooo Republican-Red.

Pathetic hypocrites!!!!

Oh, and to address the true question from the moderator. I have not been tricked on ebay, I can always tell whether its bootleg or not buy the price. Ebay is not a majical place where you can get Prada for $25, so if you see that price, please assume its fake. If its a nice enough fake, I sometimes buy it anyway. Most times people aren’t “fooled”, they were already a fool before the trickster showed up.

to “by one”- I am a staunch republican supporting John mcCain for prez. I cannot imagine our country under the executive leadership of any dem. running at this time. There is a clash of cultures in this country and the dem. want to cut and run.oh yeah- i do have a cousin killed in Iraq and WE DO SUPPORT OUR MILITARY AND OUR PRESIDENT!

by the way- buy the purse if you like it!

Does anyone know if any Kate Spade shoes are made in Brazil? I recently purchased some Kate Spade shoes that were listed as made in Italy but when I received them they said made in Brazil. I tried doing my own investigation but no one seems to know. Do they make fake Kate Spade shoes? By the way, I care if they are fake b/c they were discounted about 30% but still definitely expensive enough that I want the real thing! Thanks for any feedback :-)
