Christmas in July?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Holiday season came early this year, at least in retail world.
We’ve heard reports of holiday decorations spotted in August. It seems retailers are making an effort to encourage holiday shopping, after a disappointing fall season.
How do you feel seeing holiday decorations in August?
Does it make you want to start shopping early, or is it just annoying?

I refuse to purchase Christmas presents (and yes, I say Christmas and not holiday) until after Thanksgiving. Christmas is not about shopping - it’s about the birth of Christ and no I’m not one of those religious nuts. I just don’t believe Christmas is about the almighty dollar.

Christmas decorations, Christmas music, and Christmas advertising … ALL should happen AFTER Thanksgiving. When I was a kid, I remember when Santa always appeared at the END of the Thanksgiving Day parade (both local, and the big one on TV). THAT was the start of the “Christmas Season.” Now, I consciously avoid the merchants that begin hyping Christmas in September … puh-leeze. That just screams “greed.”

I agree that the music & decorations should happen after Thanksgiving, but I do shop all year long..There are about 15 little ones in my family so if I’m out & find something that they’ll like, I buy it..I enjoy the giving process..I buy for co workers, family out of town. Plus each year we sponsor a needy child…

it has always been my tradition to decorate the day after Thanksgiving. My kids get really excited to see what I come up with. Last year I did 7 trees here and there in the house. I find my self thinking and planning all year long but, nope no decorations go up till the day after thanksgiving.
I also take everything down before Jan 1st.
We spend the holidays talking about Christ and the reason for the season.
Some day when I am gone I want them remember wonderful happy times with me more than the gifts or the food or anything else. I want to give them Happy times.

I refuse to buy anything related to Christmas until after Thanksgiving. I got really upset at Wal-Mart two weeks ago. I went in to purchase some flower pots to bring my caladiums in before cold weather. Well, no flower pots to be found and very little in the way of things I need for fall planting. Only Christmas, Christmas, Christmas. Wal-Mart lost my business that day. I went to Lowes to get what I needed and will not be buying any Christmas from Wal-Mart this year. Actually, I think I can make do with all the decorations I already have for another year. Baked goods to my friends and co-workers. Money for the grandchildren and keep it cheap and simple. If this is Jesus’ birthday, then a charity should get the present - not Wal-Mart. Christmas in September did it for me - I am dropping out.

I too purchase presents all year long, and put them away for Christmas.
But NOT ONE decoration goes up before the day after Thanksgiving. I can only handle one holiday at a time. Right now it’s Halloween…..let me get through that, then we will work on Thanksgiving, then Christmas.
Christmas comes down on New Years Day..

This very important holy day has been marred by retailers as they push sales. I love this season, but I hate seeing decorations so early. For Christians, this day is one our most important. I wish retailers would just wait, as it was done in the 70’s when I was a kid, until after Thanksgiving to start promote it.

I agree with others that Christmas decorations should not go up until the day after Thanksgiving. Let’s try and enjoy the current holiday before we move on to the next. And again for the record, IT’S MERRY CHRISTMAS, NOT HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

One holiday at a time, please!!! Christmas doesn’t start for me until after Thanksgiving. I do pick up gifts when I see them throughout the year, but I don’t decorate until after Thanksgiving. We start the season by using the Christmas china for Thanksgiving dinner and all our decorations are down on Jan 1.
I really get irritated at the stores that already have Christmas decorations out and it does not make me spend more. If anything having Christmas decorations out so long dilutes the spirit of the season and makes you feel like it’s normal and ordinary - exactly the opposite of what they are trying to do.
Home Depot has all the Christmas decorations out and I don’t like it one bit. I didn’t walk through that area to get to the garden center the other day, but chose to leave the store.

NO DAMNIT!
Ifs only Halloween. I’ll be lucky if the christmas stuff goes up right after Thanksgiving.
what do you expect us to do? Stick a skeleton in the manger with Jesus? Or maybe Santa with a severed head in his hand would be better.
I know that Santa and Satan have the same letters, but is it possible that our “can’t wait” “want it now” society could just cool its heels a bit and MELLOW OUT ON CHRISTMAS??
If the retailers want to try getting us in the mood that’s their right. Frankly if you can get all your shopping done before Thanksgiving you are an exceptional person worthy of praise.
But for everything else, lets let the days go by at the speed mother nature intended.

I think starting too soon takes away from the fun of anticipation. By the time Christmas actually arrives, most people are sick of it.
Christmas is my favorite holiday…not because of gifts, but the whole spirit of it. I tend to wait to decorate in early December and I remove everything by New Years Eve.

Can we please wait until after Thanksgiving to see and/or discuss this??? Christmas in August is ridiculous and no, I’m not a Scrooge! My house gets decorated the weekend after Thanksgiving, the tree goes up the weekend after that and everything comes down the weekend right after Christmas.

I have seen holiday ornaments already and I was appalled to see the Garmin commericial for Xmas on TV. Its now Halloween straight to Christmas. Thanksgiving is now a complimentary holiday to Christmas. The reason being, the only things you can really buy are from the market. Why Christmas and Halloween are the top grossers. I hate it, and I wish they wouldn’t start the Christmas Blitz right after Halooween. I used to like Christmas music alot, but by the time, the holiday comes and hearing it for over 60 days. I don’t want to hear it ever again. The retailers are killing christmas and cheapening it for the almighty dollar. It’s Sad. :(

I am ready for Xmas!!!
NOW!!!
No colored lights for us, though.
Our Homeowner’s Assoc. voted to only allow clear/white lights.
Much more pleasing to the eye.

Lynette, I saw a house in Douglasville that has a Christmas tree in the house & Halloween lights outside..Even though I love both holidays, I think that was all out tacky..

My nieghbors across the street put their Halloween decorations up Labor Day weekend. They will come down this weekend, and they already have some of their Christmas Decorations out. I have to look at this house every time I look out the front windows……
Now I will have a huge Santa staring at me for the next 2 months……I guess I better be good.. ;)

Put em up whenever you want to! It is all about getting in the Christmas spirit! I love Christmas and I am not sure I can wait till Thanksgiving to put up the decorations. It puts me in a good mood. Lord knows my wife would appreciate it!
