I’m really tired of people telling me I should straighten my hair. I like my curls, my man likes my curls….my hairdresser likes my curls. If you want to control them, that’s fine, but why don’t people like curls?

It’s funny, people with straight hair want curls, and people with curly hair want it straight (usually). Either way, work with what you have!
I guess I’m lucky, I can make mine straight or curly fairly easily!

I love my curls. My hair is unique! I don’t even like to straighten my hair- 1. too much maintenance 2- I end up looking like everybody else. The techniques used on the Miss Jessie website is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYY too much.
But whatever you gotta do to bring out those curls!

I love curly and wavey hair. I hate when I try a new hairdresser and the first thing they want to do is make my hair pin straight. It’s humid, and it won’t stay so why fight it?
Personally I think wavey and curley hair makes a woman look like a free spirit and fun.

I’d love to have curls! My hair is baby fine and poker straight. Even if I spend the time to curl (rollers or hot iron) … it falls flat in no time. I’m jealous!!!!

Both my kids have thick spring curls and my daugher hates to get her hair combed. Does anyone know how to tame very thick curly hair? My daughter’s hair looks like the model above except her curls are thick so they don’t bounce. I put her her in a ponytail on top of her head and call it a day. I’ve tried everything to make the hair soft and easy to manage. Winter’s coming ahd for some reason her hair gets thicker and i’m already having trouble finding stuff strong enough to hold it in a ponytail. Wearing it loose is not an option because the hair extends out like a Diana Ross doo!

With my really curly hair I wished I could find a cute style. I have a great stylist that knows how to cut curly hair, but there are just not any great styles that you can have with curly hair. I love my curly hair very easy to maintain!

Lu Try Aussie’s 3 Minute Miracle. Fantastic conditioner that may be able to help. I used it when I had a perm (many, many years ago … I’ll never do that again!). Good luck.

Lu, My neice has very thick curly hair as well. Her mom uses Goody’s ouchless bands for her ponytails. She gets them from Rite-Aid. Every other type of band she tried would break before she even finished styling the hair! They are pretty strong, so they may work for you as well. Good luck!

Man, I wish I could go tonight! I have thick, curly hair that is beautiful but somewhat difficult to manage. I haven’t tried Miss Jessie’s techniques yet but already bought the stuff I need. The key is to dry stretch the hair while drying so it won’t draw up into one big curly poof ball around your head. I’ll have to give it a try because it’s nice to give the hair a rest every once in a while. Aveda Elixir works well with taming frizz and keeping the curls controlled. And I’ve always heard good stuff about Quidad’s products. I refuse to pay for Miss Jessie’s over-priced curly pudding. That stuff is over $40 a jar and you can basically mimic it with gel, conditioner, and beeswax. Besides, as thick as my hair is it’d be gone in 2 weeks. Oh, and people who say they don’t like curly hair are haters. :)

Some of us work in conservative firms and can’t have a frizz ball or wild curls on top of our head if we want to be taken seriously. I get my tight as a stiff hairbrush kinks from my Jewish mother’s eastern european genes. Having lived in a straight-haired world all my life, I’ve always gotten admiring compliments from straight-haired ladies but being different is overrated and, yes, I would like long, straight, glossy hair. What classically beautiful female images have kinky, wildly curly hair? Halle Berry and all such beauties straighten. Some people have curls, but we’re talking over the top. In the last year I started keeping my hair pretty short and I must admit I’m enjoying it. Stylists say this kind of hair does best very short or very long. I shampoo every five days or so and I use all of these products after shampooing - Infusium 23 moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, Infusium Moisturizing leave-in treatment, then I put on Pantene defrizzing serum and then I finish with Suave Moisturizing Gel. This kind of hair does best with lots of products on to tame it down, as opposed to straight, fine hair not needing as many products.

Lu I have crazy hair as well, so I feel your daughter’s pain. Pantene ProV’s brunette expressions makes my hair soft and helps with the knots, but I love leave-in conditioners for tangles. My favorite product is Paul Mitchell’s Super Skinny Smoothing Serum. It is a Miracle Worker, I like it better than Frizz Ease.

My hair suddenly went curly in the fourth grade when I got my first layered haircut. My mom had no idea what to do with it since hers was pin straight. I hated it for many years.
Now? I LOVE it because of all the wonderful products out there. I squeeze my hair in a towel - NO rubbing, slap on some Aveda “Be Curly”, add a little gel w/silicone, and let it air dry. I must say, it’s gorgeous and I get compliments ALL the time.
Personally, I think the reason so many women straighten their curly hair is they have class issues. Straight hair seems to say “rich” and curly hair seems to say “poor”. I don’t care- I love my curls.

gagirl- love your post!
Just a heads up that Aveda Elixer has been discontinued. I used it and loved it for many years, but now use the “Be Curly” product as a leave-in conditioner.
Enjoy!

I know exactly what all of you are feeling. I have a baby picture of me with a single curl in the center of my head… so I should’ve known it was all down hill from there. :) I tried straightening my hair back in December 2005 but by April 2006, my hair was breaking off and really hasn’t gotten back to normal since then. It’s back curly, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not quite as curly as it was and it’s a lot thinner because it keeps breaking off. (I used to have so much hair that putting it in a ponytail was a task.) Now I’m just thankful I still have some hair… curly or not. I find that using shampoo & conditioner in the shower (no matter the brand of either) and using a leave-in when out of the shower & it’s still wet works for me. I use a brand called CHI Silk Infusion. It’s a rich, leave-in treatment enriched with pure silk along with wheat and soy proteins that will penetrate and help in strengthening the hair, while providing incredible softness, manageability and shine without build up. After applying that, I use whatever mouse or gel I have on hand to finish the process. NOTE: I don’t know about all of you gals but if I let my hair dry naturally (without any products in it), I have a major afro. LOL.

Thanks guys for the suggestions you gave me. I made a list and will try them all until I find the one that works for us. My daughter is only 3yrs old so we have a long way to go and her hair is getting longer. She cries that she hates her curls and I tell her she’ll thank me for it 10yrs from now snd that I wish I had hair like hers. My hair is thick kinky to wavy texture so I have to keep it permed. Let hear it for the curls…..

I have fine, relaxed hair. When I let it air dry, it has a curly wave to it. Can anyone suggest a product to create a larger curl? I’m not sure what kind of curl I would have without the relaxer.

I’ve actually found that a combo of Be Curly and Miss Jessie’s Baby Buttercream works best for me. Be Curly really waves it up, but my hair is dry afterwards. A little, just a little of Buttercream does the trick. Loving my hair these days.

My sister has spiral-curly hair, to the point where people have asked where she gets it permed. (My favorite response was when she was about five and replied in an exaperated tone, “God!”)
She used Aveda Elixir for a while (and bought 10 bottles from her salon when it was discontinued), but she’s discovered that Fructis Soft Curl Cream works even better and is a lot cheaper, too.
