In need of a Prada handbag? Head to BJ’s in East Point where you can score one for $220.
Dana Thomas, Author of “Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster,” isn’t surprised. Prada, a company that has attempted to go public in the past, is dependent on broad appeal.
It “leads them to just sell whatever has been made at cost or below cost,” said Thomas, who is in town today at Booksmith in Decatur.
Thomas said she wrote her book with the goal of informing people that luxury goods are no longer being made by Gepetto in the back of the shop. “I didn’t want to dissuade people from buying luxury goods. I just wanted them to know what they are buying,” Thomas said.
Are you obsessed with luxury at any cost, or have you figured out a savvy way to get high-end items for less?

I don’t understand anyone’s obsession with labels/luxury items. What insecurities or arrogance prompts a person to ‘keep up with (or snub) the Jones’? Can someone help me understand this?

Sassy, I’m with you. These are the same people in sub-prime mortgages, maxed-out credit cards, and who are unable to pay their bills on time because they are spending all their money on fancy clothes, paraphernalia and eateries. But heck, they have an iPhone, the designer gear, and that’s ALL that matters. :)
Go on, you fashionistas. I’m dying to hear what you have to bleat back at me :)

Get luxury for less or invest in a few good items every once in a while. I have Coach bags for example, only because the leather is super-durable. In terms of fashion, only couture items are handmade, everything else is mass-produced. Go to Ross, Marshall’s or the outlets for goodness sake. Buy for quality, not name brands. Fashion is about creativity. There are people who shop at the Goodwill who have more style than some millionaires.
