Aesthetic Anthropology & the Botox Revolution
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Americans are a little obsessed with wrinkles according to a study commissioned by Allergan, makers of the injectable fillers Botox Cosmetic and Juvederm.
More than half of us want to get rid of all the wrinkles on our faces, compared to only 35 percent of French women.
Last week, Atlanta’s own Sander L.Gilman, a professor at Emory University, who served as a consultant for the Aesthetic Anthropology Survey of Beauty & Grooming Trends Across Cultures, presented the study findings in New York. Here he offers some insights on cultural differences in beauty:
“In Europe, there is an assumption that it is okay to look 60 as long as 60 isn’t staring back at you and screaming, ‘You’re collapsing!’” said Gilman. In the U.S. it has almost always been more important to look youthful, even artificially, he said.
Of course, the Botox revolution of the ‘90s has started to change those attitudes. “We’ve gone from thinking about aging as something that is a slippery slope to death, to thinking about aging as a state in one’s life that is connected to being healthy and vital,” Gilman said.
Here are some other interesting tidbits from the study:
Use of Botox cosmetic injectibles has increased 400% since 2001.
More European women compared to U.S. women report looking younger than their age.
Italy is the only country in which soap and water is not a popular facial cleanser (no word on what they use.)
Italian men have the highest monthly spend on grooming products, while U.S. men have the lowest.
What do you think of the study findings? Are Americans too hung up on looking young?

A whiff of Usher
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
We finally got a whiff of Usher’s new juice and frankly we weren’t too thrilled.
The general consensus around here was that Usher She had a strange smelling top note, while Usher He was a bit generic. Someone said it smelled it a little too “Davidoff Cool Water.”
Another in office quote: “Maybe he should stick to music.”
Usher fans (or fragrance buffs) what’s the verdict on his latest venture?

Atlanta’s New Era of Caps
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
New Era, the largest licensed headwear company in the world, opted last month to open a fifth flagship store in Atlanta at 117 Luckie Street between Cone & Spring (other stores are in New York , Buffalo, London and Toronto).
The store, set up like a baseball diamond, has a large selection of headwear ranging from the official league caps (NFL, NHL and MLB) to more creative options such as a $500 snakeskin version. And there’s obviously a huge stock of Atlanta logo caps.
What do you think of a store devoted to solely to caps and what’s your favorite cap to wear?

The fall of low-rise
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Low-rise jeans still dominate the denim market, but maybe not for long.
Higher rises are high on the list of fall must haves. Think 70’s style wide legs and Gloria Vanderbilt jeans circa 1980.
Should low-rise be outlawed?
What is your favorite brand or style of high-rise jeans?

H&M DIY
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It seems anyone can be a fashion designer these days. First, it was celebrities, now it’s the average shopper.
H&M (soon to arrive in Atlantic Station) in partnership with Electronic Arts Inc., created The Sims 2 H&M Fashion Runway PC video game. Players designed clothes and the top outfits are now posted online for a “Project Runway” style vote.
Check out the site before Sept. 21, vote on your favorite outfit, and in the spring you might (that’s a big MIGHT) see the winning design in the store. (H&M isn’t obligated to actually create any of the designs.)
What do you think? Should just anyone be able to design clothing?

Belk takes a Bow
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Belk marked its official grand opening in Phipps Plaza today with a ribbon cutting ceremony and gift cards for the first 250 guests.
Devoted shoppers of what was formerly Parisian had initially expressed concern about the conversion to Belk, but many people shopping today seemed okay with the new store.
“It looks the same as before,” said Bob Miner, shopping with his wife, Caroline. “And they [Parisian] reassured me that it would be the same quality service.”
Who has been to the new Belk at Phipps? What do you think of the store and the merchandise?

Sugarland talks Style
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Atlantan Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland recently wrapped a concert in town and shared a few thoughts on matters of style:
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is a little organic, a little hippie-chic, but it’s always easy. No matter how glamorous the occasion, if I’m not relaxed and comfortable, I probably won’t wear it! When I’m dressing to be glamorous, I’ll wear Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel, Marc Jacobs and Chloe. For clothes to I wear on stage, I like Twelfth Street, Velvet, and Catherine Malandrino.
Q: What was the last thing you purchased?
A:I think the last thing I bought was actually a new pair of yoga pants (I do lots of yoga)!
Q: Where do you shop?
A: I absolutely love Atlanta boutiques. The fashion scene has really evolved and malls aren’t the only option — Jeffrey, Kaleidescope, Squash Blossum and Kelly’s Closet are some of my favorites.
Q: What is the most important element of style?
A: I keep my style simple with products that are not high maintenance. One stress-free product that I really love are the Listerine Whitening Quick Dissolving Strips. A beautiful smile is a big part of one’s style, and with the strips, I can whiten anytime, anywhere - I even wore them during my meet and greet yesterday!
Q: Do you think Atlanta has changed much?
A: In terms of style, I think Atlanta has become a lot less local and traditional in the past 10 years or so. Atlanta fashion can be so sophisticated and chic, there are these amazingly diverse, well-dressed people all over the place. What I love about Atlanta now is that there are so many really unique, new shops. I can spend hours browsing around the Virginia Highlands, Poncey-Highlands and Little 5 Points looking for new styles.
I’m on the road 280 days a year but Atlanta will always be my hometown.

Get the Maxx
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
We weren’t too thrilled with the selection in TJ Maxx’ “The Runway at Maxx” when it appeared in the Buckhead store.
But the discount chain recently opened another such designer boutique at the Howell Mill location. The merchandise at this store is less picked over and the clothes don’t look like designer rejects.
On a recent visit, we spotted a gray Marc Jacobs sweater jacket, Rock & Republic jeans for $79, and a brown Catherine Malandrino trench for $199. Other finds included blouses by Elie Tahari, dresses by Susana Monaco and jeans from Earnest Sewn.
New shipments arrive weekly. Let us know if you find anything brilliant.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Mattel announced yet another toy recall of about 800,000 toys that includes some Barbie Accessory Sets and GeoTrax Engines tainted with lead paint from China.
The items were pulled from shelves at major stores such as Toy ‘R’ Us before stores opened today.
Will the recalls impact your holiday toy shopping? Where will you shop and what kinds of toys will you buy?
