Consignment Shopping

Do you shudder at the thought of wearing second hand clothes or have you mapped out every resale store in the Atlanta metro area?

It’s true not all resale stores are high quality, but finding the gems could mean owning designer clothing and handbags at 80 to 90% off.

Consignment stores, which sell items and then pay a portion of the sale to the owner, are one avenue to get better quality merchandise than you may find at the local Salvi.

Do you think resale is taboo?

Which consignment stores in Atlanta do you like?

I have no problems buying second hand clothes..I usually buy from a thrift store. You can get good big name brands for a fraction of what you pay at the store..I’m not big on buying from a consigment store..I just bought my neice a pair of Ann Taylor jeans (with tags still on them $78.00) at a thrift store for $1.25. my kind of shopping…

Everyone should avoid re-sale, thrift and consignment shops so there’s more for me to pick from. Buy expensive clothes brand new and then donate to your local thrift store after they have been worn a few times so I can benefit.

I like “Designer Consignment” They have lots of name brands, like new clothing. To name a few; Kate Spade, Versache,Ann Taylor, Ellen Tracy, Gucci, etc. The store is well organized. The prices are reasonable (not cheap) and the quality is very good.

I only wear designer and name brand duds — and they all come from thrift stores!

My colleagues are always commenting on how nice I dress. The outfit I am wear today: Banana Republic slacks, Lord and Taylor sweater set and Nine West shoes cost me all of $15.50. Retail, my outfit probably would cost $100-$140. I use the savings to pay for the $100 sneakers my kids wear.

Last weekend I paid $6 for two practically new silk sweaters for Fall, one red and one ivory, and a beautiful apple green cashmere sweater. Some of the brand names that I see consistently are Lauren, Chico’s and Jones New York.

It’s a lot of fun; you just need patience to go through ALL the stuff hanging on the racks. On a funny note, if the TV show “Dynasty” ever came back, Joan Collins and Linda Evans could be outfitted in a flash at my favorite Goodwill store.

Try a Second Glance in Lilburn; beautiful things - many with price tags still on them.

I agree w/ Lily, stay out of the stores so there is more for me! LOL

Anyway, Rerun over in Sprayberry is a good spot.

It is like most anything: Hit or Miss. Some days I find TONS some days not so much.

As for the Salvation Army Thrifts: they pretty much get the local areas donations, so consider their locale before you go.

Couture Consigner next to the Hardee’s (I think) on Main St. in Alpharetta is great! I refuse to pay full price for anything. The clothes are in great shape and recent styles.

Now shoes, that’s another story…..

I buy almost all my clothing from the Talbots Outlet. All new. Classics never go out of style.

But, I never tell anyone about it if they are my size : )

HS Teacher…ssshhh! Don’t tell EVERYONE about my very, very favorite place for career clothes! (inluding plus sizes)

I buy tons of second hand clothes…I have a small kid who is not a fun shopping partner, so lately I’ve been finding a lot of designer pieces on ebay…one fave was a Talbots linen suit for $10…just watch the shipping costs and factor in dry-cleaning.

You can get a list of seasonal (spring and fall) consignment sales for babies, kids and juniors according to weekend or county at http://www.thebargainwatcher.com (don’t leave out the www or you’ll get a different page). I comb through the racks and get my kids top brands in great condition for $1-3 per item. Most have 1/2 off days on the last day, so you save even more.

Buying resale can provide your wardrobe with a boost of creativity that may just set you apart from the common clothing that everyone else is wearing. And if you don’t like the idea of wearing someone else’s clothing, at least check out thrift and consignment stores for the accessories. I snagged a Gucci bag from the 80s for $35!

Practically everything I own is from consignment or thrift shops. I like Back By Popular Demand in Lilburn, Attic Treasures in Chamblee (Broad St), and the one on Broad St in Greensboro (Lake Oconee). I bought a gorgeous long colorful batik wrap skirt, matching tank top and matching bag there, new with tags, all for $12! A hint about thrift shops like Value Village: Wear something like thin leggings to try on clothes over your clothes, bcz they don’t have fitting rooms.

Does anyone know of any consignment shops that would take my wedding dress? I had no luck on ebay, and one shop I called wouldn’t take a dress over 2 years old.

I have gone to thrift/consignment stores before, and have come out with some good finds. I just bought a black pencil skirt made by express for under $2 at the thrift store last week!

I’m a total thrift store convert—i used to hate them, but now i love finding cheap goodies there!

I do a bargain shopping blog, and recently wrote an entry sharing some of my ATL thrift store finds: http://bargainbetty.wordpress.com/tag/thrift-stores/
