Wholesale Warehouse Wars
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Retail experts have estimated the value of the Costco shopper at $100,000 annual income. Costco, they say, has some of the most affluent customers.
In fact, when Costco shows up in a new development, that allegedly attracts all the other retailers who want to reach big spenders.
But what of BJ’s Wholesale and Sam’s Club? Are those for the masses, while Costco is for the shopping elite?
In the world of warehouse club giants, which one do you prefer? Why?

Since I am single with no children, I am not a big of the warehouse clubs. The yearly fee + the waste would cost me more than what I save. The only time I join is when I am going to purchase a big ticket item.
That said much prefer Costco to Sam’s Club. I’ve always preferred their product lines and the service is much better in my experience.

I shop at Sam’s club..But, that’s because it’s close to my house. If there was a Costco’s near me, I would shop either one..

My husband and I are big coffee drinkers, and you can get Half & Half for around $1.50 at Sam’s and Costco so the savings on that one product pays for our membership. We have been Sam’s members for years but I just got a Costco card and I like it better than Sam’s.

We don’t have either in Dalton… the closest is a Sam’s club in Chattanooga. We belong to Sam’s but don’t use it as much as we would if it were closer to home. I used to belong to Costco, but the closest is in Kennesaw, just too far away to benefit.
that said, the two Walmarts and two K-Marts in Dalton get most of my business.

Definitely Costco. Bright, cheery, well laid out, GREAT eatery if you’re running an errand there during lunch; doesn’t have that “warehouse” feel like the others. More than ample food sampling stations, wine selection, really like their seasonal gift items. Seem to be short on cashiers always, but who isn’t. Good price on gas, fast moving lanes. We visited Sam’s Club last year on a one day pass - dark, dinghy, and DIRTY. Member of BJ’s as well and they are just ok.

Costco has better service and a more interesting product selection. BJs has more reasonable sizes. These are good shopping choices when you want items that are not usually on sale at a regular grocery store.
However, I still see a case of 20 units for 19.99-24.99 when I can get the 1 I need at Kroger/Publix for a dollar.
More is not always better.

Unless you run a retail store or have a really large family the savings on perishables are non-existant because of the waste.
However, I bought a mambership and 2 tires at Sam’s for less than the cost of the same 2 tires at a local tire dealer. I now figure the membership is free because of that.
Costco membership is more exensive that Sam’s and to my knowledge there isn’t one in my county so Sam’s gets the little revenue I generate for them.
Other than that bulk purchasing is bulk purchasing. Not much difference that I see.

Costco has a better selection and mix of products for consumers…Sam’s Club seems more geared towards business owners…I shop mostly at Sam’s since its closer to me, however a new Costco recently open not too far from me and I am becoming a big fan of Costco !

BJ’s for convenience. The only Sam’s and Costco near us are located in high traffic areas.

I have been a member of Costco since they opened here in Duluth. I also had a Sams but discontinued it. I like the fact that Costco sends out coupons for additional discounts on some products like toilet paper and paper towels. I also like their ready made dinners, salads and sandwiches in the meat department. Many times their homemade chicken enchiladas and homemade chicken salad have gotten me out of a fix. I feel the savings justifies the membership fee in my case. Where else can you get a giant kosher hot dog and a coke for %1.50?

I have been a member at all three and have to say that Costco is the best of the bunch. Costco is allegedly opening up in Newnan, I can’t wait as I had to drop them due to the distance involved in travelling there, what with the cost of gas it just didn’t pay. As soon as they do, I’m dropping BJ’s like a hot potato.

Costco hands down. The selection is WAY better and I always love their assortment of seasonal items. I bought some boxed chocolates from there for Christmas gifts and I still get comments from the recipients about how delicious they were. It’s true, there are always great samples there too. The gas prices are awesome!!
