H&M confirmed in Atlantic Station
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s official! H&M (Hennes & Mauritz) has finally signed a lease with Atlantic Station.
The store will be the first one in the state.
H & M debuted seven years ago in New York with its first store at 5th Avenue and 51st.
It has taken months for the trendy clothing retailer to confirm arrival in Atlanta. The new store will be about 25,000 square feet, overlooking Central Park in Atlantic Station’s Fashion Avenue on 18th Street.
By Spring 2008, Atlantans will have access to affordable clothing by a revolving group of upscale designers. Past collections have come from Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney. Currently, Roberto Cavalli is designing a collection exclusive to the stores.
Are you happy, Atlanta? Why or why not?

Yeah, I knew this last fall.
Finally something unique to Atlantic Station that I can’t find bigger and better 10 minutes up 400.
Sadly, I’ve never found a thing in an H & M that I’d spend money on or wanted to stand in the store for more than 3 minutes.
how much of a shame is it that Atlantic Station never became more than a date spot (for younger and hipper people than I).

It seems that in Atlantic Station it would be more profitable to open a 25,000 square foot store that does hair braiding and sells weaves. Hopefully they will be opening a Popey’s there soon.

I am shocked by the blatent racist remarks made in this blog. I realized when I moved here 22 years ago that the old south was alive and kicking but really so open and unashamed. I know when Dream girls opened large crowds of young black men and women were hanging out and going to the movie but Atlantic Station is not an all black neighborhood and if it was so what? As in all neighborhoods intown there are always diversity in the population. For the record I am niether black nor do I live in Atlantic Station but the implication that it is an African American ghetto and to be written off is just ignorant. Even if it was where is the compassion and empathy that make you human? It is a shame that in this day and age in such a large urban area there is still so much bigotry that individuals like Mr Man and Cheddar can parade around in their white sheets unabashedly.

TONY - If u think that just because you are in the South - there is racism. YOU ARE AN IDIOT! There is racism NORTH and South - from Blacks and Whites! If you make an ignorant comment that I am a racist because I say “No to Amnesty…” then you are an even bigger idiot!!!

In fact TONY- take a stroll down Martin Luther King Drive tonight about 11pm or so…see if you are treated with respect and dignity by the local neighbors…Would you survive Tony? Yes, there is racism in the South… much of it is not generated by whites…Many whites are sick of being victims of racism from blacks!!! You going to take that walk tonight Tony?

H&M coming to Atlanta is great. Too bad it will be too crowded to shop at for the first six months. Just like Ikea. :(
And I agree that there is more black on white racism in Atlanta than white on black. Try walking around Five Points at lunchtime.

Funny how a clothing company from an all-white country (Sweden) causes a racial uproar in Atlanta. Par for the course…
Looking forward to more new stuff coming to Atlantic Station, but with an increasing rate of violent crime occuring in the vicinity, I think I’ll be heading back up north a bit more to Lenox or to Dahlonega. Replace the useless rent-a-cops with 24-hour APD and I will reconsider.

H&M is really nothing to get too exicited about. I moved here two years ago from little ole Richmond, VA and there and H&M has been there for about four years. If you like flimsy, Heroine chic, Chineese made Euro-Trash club clothes you are in luck. Otherwise you can find much better apparel at The Gap, Bananna Republic or JCREW..all USA companies. Better yet why not support all the cool Atlanta owned and opperated boutiques all over the city.

It’sad that race was brought into a topic about the opening of an H&M store. Did any of you ever think that affordable clothing just might be sought by all kinds of people?
H&M clothes are a bit tawdry, but so are many “upscale” stores like Bebe and Nicole Miller!

fungirl78! How can you generalize Atlanta and say that it is ghetto? It includes so many nationalities and cultures that is making it a melting pot of everything. I work in Atlanta and one of is suburbs. I find so much enjoyment in traveling to all of it metropolitan neighborhoods and gleaning all that they all have to offer. There is so much to offer everyone here. Don’t make a judgement about a city that you have not experienced to it fullest!

Geez! In my years of teaching and being a social observer, your socio-economic status have more of a determining factor of ghettoism (new word) than race.
Anyway, back to the happy news….H&M in Atlanta! I am so excited! They should open two stores in two locations simultaneously. Atlanta is soooooooooooooooooo overdue. They have a store in Wisconsin for crissakes.

Oh goody. They should combine H&M with and American Apparel for one-stop crappy, unstylish, ill-fitting, unflattering schmata shopping. You can buy boxes of rags at Home Depot even cheaper, folks. H&M is sometimes referred to as the Ikea of clothing, but that’s totally wrong; the Yugo was the H&M of cars.

H&M will be a great addition to Atlanta and to Atlantic Station and I’m very excited to see it come.
It is quite sad though that some people on this blog cannot articulate what the actual problem is with the environment at Atlanic Station and instead resort to easy racist and just stupid statements.
The problem with Atlantic Station however, isn’t “racism”, though these poorly constructed comments certainly come through as such.
The problem is that those who have purchased VERY expensive property and live in Atlantic station are being disrespected by those that visit, who if we’re going to be honest, are disproportionately young african-americans. It seems the Lenox Mall crowd of thugs and ladies who dress like prostitutes has found a new place to hang out.
Atlantic Station was built as a Live Work Play village. We nearly bought there at ATL Lofts and I’m glad we didn’t. I would be REALLY angry if I lived there and had to endure the constant thump of pimped out rides cruising around just to be seen and heard and causing nothing but traffic jams and being a constant nuisance, not to mention and detriment to property values. Then there’s the violent crime which of course and sadly, was african-american folks shooting each other in broad daylight. It’s probably only a matter of time before something bigger happens and innocent people get hurt.
Note that the property management and security have limited vehicle access now to the streets surrounding the central village area. Obviously this is an attempt to scuttle the influx of those who have zero intention of parking and buying anything - more likely some of them are there to sell something or just to cruise. They could care less about the residents of Atlantic Station and the visitors of all stripes who are actually there to contribute something other than noise, mayhem and gridlock.
Look up and you’ll probably notice that ATL Lofts are largely sitting empty. Nobody, black, white, gay, straight, families with children, or empty nesters want to spend half a million dollars or more to have to live amongst thugs and hoes or at the very least feel unsafe and uncomfortable in their own neighborhood.
Atlantic Station could and should be great and diverse and fun for EVERYONE. Just show a little respect at least if not for yourself than for the people around you and we can all get along and enjoy each other and all that Atlantic Station and Atlanta has to offer.

H&M in Atlanta - long overdue! I live in their basic t-shirts which have lasted years. Plus when you want something fun you can actually afford to buy it at H&M and pay for it before the trend changes. I think they offer unbeatable quality at incredible prices.
H&M will be a great addition to Atlantic Station and a huge draw. I think everyone in Atlanta is longing for something fresh & new that isn’t in every mall or shopping center. We are thrilled H&M is opening in Atlanta!!!

JAG - be afraid….be very afraid! I’ll see your wife at H&M! You and my husband can have a beer and wait for the damage…
Great choice of locations, too. I do hope they keep the store here organized better than the NYC store - it’s such a muddle, it is hard to find things. And LOTS of dressing rooms, please!
As for everyone else: I’m pretty sure this blog is about H&M and shopping. Not about Atlantic Station (yeah, this Atlanta native whitey shops there often) and not about racism, whether here or the rest of the country.
One idiot made a blatant racist comment, and the rest of you rose to the bait like starving trout. Good grief. Do you think maybe you’ve just been manipulated?? What’s more, do you think you just expressed an original thought on the subject? Yawn.
If you want to talk about racism in Atlanta (or the south, or anywhere else), please go start a blog for that. Yes, it’s an important subject, but there is a time and a place for it, and neither is here.
THIS blog is about shopping, so stick to frivolity! If it’s too silly for you, don’t participate.

Great news for Atlanta and Atlantic Station! This will be a great addition to the recently opened hip restaurants (Dolce, Geisha House, Ten Pin Alley) and boutiques (K-la, Knitch, Nani Aveda Spa).
In response to several of the comments above, have you been to Atlantic Station lately? I am one of the 3,000 plus people that work within the development. I couldn’t think of a more diverse and safe community in all of Atlanta. There is more security (private and APD) than any other retail development I have ever visited. Come out and check it on out!

Yes, the crowd is diverse and isn’t that a great thing?? That is what this country is all about! I know there have been some incidents at Atlantic Station but you will find that anywhere in Atlanta and anywhere around any large metropolitan area. Unfortunately, all the things people have said in here is pretty much true about Atlantic Station. I don’t mean to sound racist, but there is a very strong positive correlation between crime rate and the number of african americans in an area. its sad that there are still so many uneducated AAs, and they still continue to go down the route of crime and poverty. If only they could be more educated like the rest of American society. I have lived in Atlanta for 20 years now and have had a lot of experiences with AAs…pretty much ALL negative. It’s not racism….its just they have brought this image onto themselves by acting so uncivilized.
However, i am still very happy about H&M coming to Atlanta…this will most likely be bad for my bank account though…i am so excited to shop there!

Fungirl78, as a native Swede, I take great offense to your comment. If you knew anything about my fine (non-racist) country, you would not make such an erroneous assumption only to spark more ignorant talk on this board. The racism being displayed only has to do with Atlantic Station, and not what stores come to it.
