Wal-Mart Stonewall

Wal-Mart SuperCenter in the District at Howell Mill

Atlanta residents were excited last fall when Wal-Mart planned its “urban” store location on Howell Mill Road. They were happy to get a Wal-Mart with decent décor and a better mix of merchandise that includes gourmet cheese and an expanded wine section.

But the prospect of a great big Wal-Mart SuperCenter on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, between Chattahoochee Drive and Sugarloaf Parkway, has residents of Duluth up in arms.

One resident suggested Wal-Mart go to Norcross instead. Tomorrow there’s a meeting with Wal-Mart execs to “discuss.”

What’s your vote on Wal-Mart? Is it worth enduring the big, bulky buildings to get cheap goods?

No. I’d never shop at Wal-Mart. They treat their employees horribly. Many locations don’t give their employees fulltime hours, but the work schedules are so irregular that the worker can’t get another part time job. Wal-Mart makes tons of money but doesn’t provide health insurance, instead instructing employees on how to use Peachcare for their kids. Also, most of their items are from China, often made by underpaid workers, and their goods are so underpriced that other stores that can’t buy in that kind of volume can’t compete.

Do EVERYTHING you can to keep Wal-Mart out! I live about 4 blocks from the new “urban”, “upscale” Wal-Mart on Howell Mill. I tried to be optomistic when it opened (was even a little excited), but it is just awful. The parking lot is full of trash, teenagers are always loitering in the parking lots, the inside of the store is a mess. Sure - the prices are cheaper, but not nearly low enough to force me back. And the whole “upscale” product line (wine, cheese) is a joke. Its all junk. I think it brings down the entire development - instead of fresh and new, it just looks trashy. At the VERY least, make sure that they adhere to the building codes!!

You oughta see our small town, South Georgia Walmart “SuperCenter.” It’s hideous. “Polished” concrete floors, dim lighting, invisible clerks, dismal grocery section, aisle markers unrelated to what is actually on the shelves down that aisle.

Yet because it closed down most of our mom & pop stores downtown, our only option to shopping there is one of the towns to the east or west of us and that’s a 20+ mile drive one way…either way!

Most unpleasant shopping experience ever. I even wrote to the home office about it and received no reply.

NO TO WALMART! This area is too upscale for an ugly store like Walmart to leave its ugly mark. STAY AWAY WALMART! WE DON’T WANT YOU!

Why do we need another Wallmart/ there is one on every corner; it does not help traffic situations; it will just make the congestion worse;

Walmart donates so heavily to the Republican Party, so they can run roughshod over the people.

Remember that next November!

I think if it was a Super Target going there in Duluth, people wouldn’t be nearly as upset. I don’t think Wal-Mart understands or cares what a blight their stores are upon the areas they are located in. Dirty stores, parking lots strewn with litter and grocery carts, bright lights on 24 hours a day disturbing surrounding neighborhoods. Why knock down perfectly good wooded areas when there are empty big box stores nearby?

Sounds like all of these responses came from the same person. Is a union activist group using this forum to push their anti-Wal-Mart agenda? Believe me, these union groups could care less about the neighborhood impact of Wal-Mart. They are angry that Wal-Mart has manged to keep the thuggish unions out of their stores, and so they are spending millions on anti-Wal-Mart propaganda as a measure of revenge and a vain attempt to force more dues-paying members into their ranks.

If you don’t like Wal-Mart’s policies, feel free to shop elsewhere and pay more.
