15 Minutes of Fame

Want to get famous? You’ve got two chances beginning tomorrow:

MODEL CALL Be a male or female, age 13 to 21, and go to JC Penney in Southlake Mall on Thursday between 4pm and 6pm. If you work the runway well enough, scouts from Elite Model Management Atlanta may pick your face from the crowd. Return on Saturday at 1pm for a fashion show of the latest JC Penney prom trends.

STARVING ARTIST Biore (yes, the pore strip people) and Gen Art, the art and entertainment organization devoted to uncovering emerging talent in fashion, film, music and visual arts; have teamed up to sponsor a competition for aspiring female artists.

Young women can enter original artwork tomorrow through May 31, 2007 in either of the above four categories. Grand Prize winners in each category will win a trip to New York City for a special showcase and each will receive a $20,000 grant from Biore (a dollar for each pore on our faces) to further her career in the arts.

So Long Forth & Towne

It seemed like a promising concept, but Forth & Towne, the Gap Inc. owned stores designed to appeal to women over 35, are shutting down. Gap Inc, announced yesterday that it would close the 19 locations across the country.

The three Atlanta stores (Perimeter, The Avenue Cobb, and The Avenue Webb Ginn) have been open only 6 months. Gap executives said the stores were “not demonstrating enough potential,” though they never released sales figures.

By June, all the stores will be shuttered.

Too bad, they actually had some pretty nice stuff, but apparently the 35 and up set had no interest. If you haven’t been there, now would be a good time to go. No doubt they’ll have some pretty good sales!

Will you miss Forth & Towne? Or is the first you’ve ever heard of it?

Music and Lyrics: The T-shirt

lyricculture.com

"Meaningless Kiss" T-shirt, $90

Take home a little Hugh Grant style self-effacement in the form of a limited edition T-shirt designed exclusively for “Music and Lyrics,” the new movie featuring Grant and Drew Barrymore.

Grant plays a washed up 80’s pop star that desperately needs Barrymore, a quirky wordsmith, to come up with hit lyrics in a hurry. The “Meaningless Kiss” T-shirt features the name of a song from the movie soundtrack that Grant actually sings (!!!).

Created by Lyric Culture, a brand dedicated to celebrating the lyrics of some of the greatest songs ever (they have rights to songs by the Beatles, The Mamas & The Papas and Marvin Gaye among others), the shirt is on sale for $90 at Bill Hallman or Lyric Culture.

American Girl in Atlanta

americangirl.com

The Doll Hair Salon at American Girl Boutique and Bistro

Hold on to your dolls. American Girl Boutique and Bistro is coming to Atlanta. The near 10-year-old organization recently announced plans to open the new store at North Point Mall (a Dallas store is also underway).

The 12,000 square foot space will sell a rotating selection of the popular dolls and doll accessories, as well as offering brunch, lunch, dinner and dessert in the bistro. Dolls can get their hair done in the Doll Hair Salon while girls celebrate birthdays in the separate party rooms. There are also mom and daughter classes held throughout the year.

Currently there are only three American Girl Place locations in the country (Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles.) The Atlanta store is scheduled to open mid-to-late 2007.

Monique Lhuillier

New York — Monique Lhuillier will probably always be associated with wedding dresses and evening gowns, but this season, the designer was inspired by something a little less froufrou…well, sort of.

Architecture, specifically The Disney Concert Hall designed by Frank Gehry, was the wind beneath the ostrich feathers that flew from the bodice of a strapless organza cocktail dress. Lhuillier seems to have leaned on a Gehry trademark in designing a cocktail dress of silk tulle over lame. Hammered gold discs at the neckline added a touch of metal.

The designer reached higher heights with wrist-length sleeves on a gold Jacquard print coat, but she clearly wasn’t ready to leave her evening dress roots behind.

While an embroidered cheetah print gown layered with tulle may have been another shout-out to the Gehry technique, it was the emerald green corseted gown in silk that proved worthy of a Disney princess.

Crazy talk in New York

AJC fashion writer Nedra Rhone is sending updates from the runways of Fashion Week in New York.

Maybe there’s just something about Fashion Week that causes tensions to run high. Right about now, I’m really happy to have that bottle of gel-coated aspirin from a Day One goodie bag.

Here are some of the headache inducing conversations I’ve recently been exposed to:

First conversation: Fashion girl 1: “The people at [a fashion house that shall remain nameless] are so annoying.” Fashion girl 2: “Yeah, they bother you all the time.” Fashion girl 1: “Like once I was driving and it was 8 p.m. and my cell phone rang and I was like ‘Hello?’ and it was them. Fashion girl 2: “No!”

(FYI: Fashion Girl 1 tried to hurdle a lane divider because she thought seat holders were being allowed in while the rest of us underlings waited in line. That was not the case.)

Second conversation: Girl: “There are so many people in here, how can you see anything [on the runway]?” Guy: “That’s why models are so tall.”

Ummmm. OK.

My hotel is next to the Church of Scientology, I’m beginning to think it’s kismet.

Fall makeup: Behind the Scenes

New York — Atlanta is in the house (errrr, tent)! Thanks to Jono of Jono Productions, I found a fellow Atlantan (okay, former Atlantan) in the Fashion Week crowd.

Travis Culberson of Decatur is a free-lance makeup artist working the Ellen Tracy show for Nars. Five years ago, he quit his job in finance with the dream of becoming a makeup artist. “My experience has been great,” he said, “I’ve been working fashion week for four years.”

Culberson has worked with makeup artists such as Pat McGrath, designers Michael Kors and Donna Karan, and several top models. “It’s always exciting when you see the girls who are in all the magazines,” Culberson said.

James Boehmer, the lead makeup artist for Nars, sent a very distinctive look down the runway at Ellen Tracy. The makeup had to be aggressive to stand up to the predominantly black collection, he said. The look?: “Strong eyes and strong lips, which is usually not what we do, but we are changing it today,” Boehmer said. It was an 80’s Robert Plant effect, but without the glossy red pout. Lips were matted red with Nars Forbidden Red Velvet Matte Lip Pencil.

Eyes got smoky shades of taupe and black from Nars Duo Cream Eyeshadow in Madagascar (in stores in April) and Pandora. Cheeks got a subtle shimmer with Nars, The Multiple in Copacabana.

Reese’s Pieces

New York — Tracy Reese never fails to please the crowd. The Detroit native, who recently opened a flagship store in New York, stuck with what has always worked — hyper-feminine clothes with a totally chic edge — for her her Fall 2007 collection.

Click here to see a gallery of her designs.

Notable looks ranged from a low-waist shift in black and bone with patent trim to a black and bone jacket in herringbone print with a waist of fit and flare gathers. A gray T-shirt with ruched sleeves was also a nice touch.

Reese, as with many other designers, was generous in her use of metallics, but in an unexpected way, such as a silver tweed motorcycle jacket paired with bone grosgrain shorts. The designer inserted bursts of color into the mix with magenta, even matching a strawberry tunic coat with a magenta cocktail dress.

Her happy fans attending the show included singers Kelly Rowland and Alicia Keyes, and former model, Veronica Webb.

Old vs. new

NEW YORK - I don’t know that I’ve ever heard the term “Sporty Couture”, but that’s the word used to describe designs by REYES, that’s Jose Ramon Reyes, not Brian Reyes (designer of America Ferrera’s Golden Globe gown) as I and some others in attendance initially thought.

The show, held Sunday at Bumble and Bumble, a hair salon in New York, had some of the more colorful looks I’ve seen so far, such as a scuba sheath dress in electric blue or a very cool ultraviolet hooded track jacket that reminded me of the Izod Windbreakers I coveted nearly 20 years ago. I read later, that Reyes really was paying homage to sporty looks of the mid-eighties…

It was Reyes’ first runway show, and I think there is something to be said for new designers. I actually find myself looking forward to whatever they send down the runway, mainly because they are still able to take chances…

Do you like established or emerging designers? Who are some of your favorite newbies?

The C (Celebrity) Factor

I’m not generally a celebrity sympathizer, but after seeing the paparazzi in action at Fashion Week, I did feel a little bad for the A through D list notables being bombarded with cameras. Here’s what I’ve learned: 1) You’re hot, until you’re not. Imagine you’re a sideline celebrity getting a moment in the spotlight. Then an A or B lister strolls by. Before you can utter another syllable, the camera swings away. Talk about ego crushing. 2) Denial is important. I watched a cameraman point a blinding light less than 2 inches from Glenda Bailey, editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar. Bailey didn’t flinch. She didn’t even stop her conversation.

The fame game

Howard Stern’s girlfriend, Beth Ostrosky, caused a flurry of flash bulbs here at Fashion Week. Here she is:

beth ostrosky

I’m not sure what she does, or how she got famous, (other than by being his girlfriend) but the paparazzi love her. So it got me thinking, who else has gotten famous, just by being someone’s girlfriend/boyfriend? K Fed came to mind, then I drew a blank.

Any thoughts?

CUTE N’ COMFORTABLE SHOES

Fashion Week is great, except my feet are killing me. I have a quarter-sized blister on my right foot (and a dime sized blister on my left, ewwww…) presumably from walking from show to show, standing in line for shows, standing backstage during shows.

I’ve clearly gone soft thanks to Atlanta’s car culture. But Fashion Week lasts for (duh) a week, which means I have 5 more days to limp around. I’ve tried gel insoles and thick socks. Not working. Someone told me to buy a pair of Merrill’s. Not a bad idea, but also not the mark of the fashionable. Can anyone recommend a cute comfort shoe? Under $100 please…

It’s a jungle out there!

Evidently, goodie bags are a big deal at Fashion Week, even when the show is about heart disease rather than fashion.

I learned that the hard way when a lady found her goodie bag missing this morning during the Red Dress show.

Clearly distraught, she demanded to know what happened to her bag before asking others to pass her a bag from an empty seat. Apparently energized by her reclaimed swag, she danced throughout the show and even moved up to the get a closer view from a front row seat next to Broadway actress Bebe Neuwirth.

All of that effort for a box from Celestial Seasonings, a tube of Rembrandt toothpaste, Ambi skin cream, and a package of St. Joseph safety-coated aspirin. Maybe she knows something I don’t…

Next up, Duckie Brown’s show.
