New York —Â Monique Lhuillier will probably always be associated with wedding dresses and evening gowns, but this season, the designer was inspired by something a little less froufrou…well, sort of.
Architecture, specifically The Disney Concert Hall designed by Frank Gehry, was the wind beneath the ostrich feathers that flew from the bodice of a strapless organza cocktail dress. Lhuillier seems to have leaned on a Gehry trademark in designing a cocktail dress of silk tulle over lame. Hammered gold discs at the neckline added a touch of metal.
The designer reached higher heights with wrist-length sleeves on a gold Jacquard print coat, but she clearly wasn’t ready to leave her evening dress roots behind.
While an embroidered cheetah print gown layered with tulle may have been another shout-out to the Gehry technique, it was the emerald green corseted gown in silk that proved worthy of a Disney princess.
